Any other songwriter would make these lyrics as commercial as possible, sensing a hit. Come up with a more common name than Yvonne, something with commercial appeal. But no, to Paul this is just a throwaway that he quickly forgets about.

"Yvonne’s The One... That was a beautiful song that came about purely from a postcard I received from Nick Mason who is the drummer with Pink Floyd. It had this gorgeous picture of a girl on the front with a volcano exploding behind her. I showed it to Paul. I said, 'Just look at this, this has come from Nick Mason,´ and he looked at it and he said, ´What’s it say?´Oh when I first saw Yvonne volcanoes erupted´, and he sang, “Once I saw Yvonne, volcanoes erupted”, and he sang the first bloody line of the song! We went on from there and we wrote the whole song. That was the magic that he had with The Beatles...." Interview with Eric Stewart, October 11, 2017.

Paul recorded this around 1986 or so, during the PRESS TO PLAY sessions. It was co-written with Eric Stewart of 10cc. I particularly like the line, "When I last saw Yvonne, she was covered in roses, but a sadness had entered her life." It's an aching ballad. I wish he'd release it officially.

People say he is overrated ! Tell me anybody better they have seen in their lifetime and compare to Maccas history ! Sir Paul is the only true living legend in the world ! And still producing today ! Headlining Glastonbury next year ! The only one they wanted ! And again he is delivering !

Yvonne's the one...I've been counting on she said "hold on, you're not the only one" and so, I said "so long Yvonne" When I first saw Yvonne, volcanoes erupted And her laughter flowed into my life She seemed all right, nothing wrong Everything about her was so strong And I know its gonna keep us apart.... Yvonne's the one I've been counting on She said, "Hold on You're not the only boy" And so I said, "so long Yvonne" When I saw her again, I was caught in a landslide But I didn't dare let it show Her ruby lips, teasing me Jealousy would never let us be It was always gonna keep us apart.... She never knew how much I loved her I never got to tell her We never found a way to say farewell Yvonne....... When I last saw Yvonne She was covered in roses But the sadness had ended her life She walked so tall She walked so tan Everything about her was so grand What you get is not what you see "So long Yvonne you're not fooling me" Yvonne.... Yvonne's the one I've been counting on She said, "Hold on, you're not the only one" And so I said, "So long Yvonne" So long Yvonne

For 1986 his voice is in REALLY good shape on this take... this sounds like a demo from 1968-1973. It also seems more reminiscent of his style during that earlier period. This kind of song makes you realise that Paul still 'had it' even 17 years after the Beatles split. It also makes you wonder what sort of (and how much) great music he would have composed if he had still had that Lennon influence.

So McCartney still had an incredibly versatile and inspired voice in 1986, though in general, I think he started to lose vocal versatility after the Beatles breakup. But while he was still a Beatle, at least, he was really the "man of a thousand voices." All of them beautiful. Somehow he managed to combine incredible naturalness of vocal style with great virtuosity. In many performers, virtuosity of vocal quality and style kills naturalness of vocal style/quality. Not in McCartney in his prime, though. In his prime, when with the Beatles, not only could he do more beautiful and more soothing, creamy voiced ballads than anyone anywhere, and write melodies better suited to that soothing voice than anyone else could possibly have written -- but he could also scream and roar gorgeously and with a very masculine edge. And between the soft almost feminine voiced ballads, and the roaring pirate voice, there was everything in between. And he could write such gorgeous melodies, especially in concert with John and the Beatles' harmonies backing him. And on top of it all, those good looks are not just run of the mill handsome, but uniquely beautiful. All in all, pretty astonishing person, whatever his flaws may be. Put him together with the genius of John Lennon, and no wonder people went absolutely mad for the Beatles.

Such a seductive melody! Pity the lyric is a bit inconsistent in quality. It reminds us that Macca's classic Yesterday originally started with the memorable word 'Scrambelled eggs...' But after the usual crafting and support from producer George Martin, the words, music and arrangement combined to form the meloncholy, Yesterday.
