NOTE: For the month of March 2024, I will be uploading footage I recorded during the 2023 shipping season but haven't previously posted. Early in the shipping season, I made the decision to reserve some video clips so we would all have something to enjoy during the off-season while we wait for ships to return to action. If you haven't seen it already, I recently posted my video showing the highlights of the 2023 shipping season. It can be viewed here: • 35 Great Lakes Freight...
Here is the Paul R. Tregurtha seen departing Duluth, Minnesota late on the morning of December 13, 2023. She had just loaded coal and was outbound for Lake Superior, eventually making her way to the power plants at St. Clair and Monroe in Michigan. After exchanging a captain's salute with the Aerial Lift Bridge, the Tregurtha makes her way onto the lake, while the saltwater vessel Narie waits her turn to load. (She would eventually load wheat at the CHS dock in Superior for delivery to Algeria.)
Unfortunately, I found myself on the "wrong" side of the canal for this departure, as the Aerial Lift Bridge went up a little earlier than I expected. Therefore I was looking into the sun for much of this departure. But the north pier does allow me to capture a frontal view of that big turn that all lake freighters must make before departing through the canal, so that is still something worth capturing!
The 1013' 6" Paul R. Tregurtha is the longest ship on the Great Lakes, earning her the title "Queen of the Lakes." She has held that title longer than any other lake carrier. She was launched in 1981 as the William J. DeLancey, a name she carried until 1990 when she was named after the Vice Chairman of Interlake Steamship, the ship's operator. The Paul R. Tregurtha is powered by a pair of medium-speed MaK M43C 6-cylinder diesel engines providing a combined 17,120 BHP. Her five cargo holds are accessed by 36 deck hatches. She can hold a maximum of 68,000 tons. Her self-unloading system consists of a 260-foot unloading boom which can discharge at a rate of 10,000 tons of iron ore per hour or 6,000 net tons of coal per hour.
