I had to stop and start the video to watch it all. The husband wants to talk every time I start to watch. The paints look pretty good compared to the other professional paints. They would be a good investment for a watercolor artist just starting out to get a lot of colors at a pretty reasonable price. It would help them to discover what colors they like and dislike. Thank you for sharing and testing the product. You are so kind and giving with your experience and knowledge. I really get inspired watching your videos.

An absolutely fascinating delve into the Paul Rubens brand. I have yet to dip my toe into this brand, but as I do enjoy layering, and the colours have such a low drying shift, I’m very much tempted. Many thanks for taking the time to video this. 🎨❤️🖌👍🏻

What fun! Getting a freebie and being able to play with them! Thank you for doing this - I do like seeing reviews from someone I trust - there are so many supplies out there to choose from. I like the pigment information, too - it fascinates me how different brands use the same pigment, but the color looks so different! Perylene maroon is one of my very favorite colors - I have Holbein's version. I am not in the market for a full set like this, but still enjoyed watching you go through them - thanks!

@@LizChadertonArt I don't have anything to compare it to, but I think it is more reddish than brownish. I only have 3 tubes of Holbein - this, Burnt Sienna and Burnt Umber - they all are nice and cream coming out of the tubes and are deep colors. Are you familiar with Dr. Oto Kano's KZitem channel? I love it - she tests paints like you did, giving pigment information and putting them through their paces with lifting and granulation and much more. Great video 👍 I believe the brilliant blue violet may have a fluorescent colour added to the mix that’ll be fugitive, so the lightfast rating will reflect that, but some companies don’t label what the fugitive colour is, and legally they don’t have to, which is totally annoying, but that’s the only reason I can think of for a two lightfast pigment mix to have a lower lightfast number. I may be wrong, but that’s what I’ve read with other companies. P.S…I actually wouldn’t be bored witless if you swatched ALL of your paints 😂

Really love your review about the paul rubens paints! I got the older generation (blue tubes), and I'm curious to know the difference between them. This set is nice, the only thing that puzzles me is the brilliant blue violet tube. If it's achievable mixing pv23 and pb29, why put there? They could've put instead, I don't know, another earth tone or another red. I don't know if it's your camera or my display, but I feel like this quin rose pv19 is really similar to a cooler alizarin crimson, don't you think? Seems less pinkish than w&n's permanent rose (one of my fav colors of the brand, it's vibrant and glowy)

Hmmmm. Looking at this I much prefer the W&N paints. The limited granulation is a disappointment. Maybe Paul Reubens should just be seen as an alternative to student grade paints like the W&N Cotmans. And only selling them in sets (especially if it's only in huge sets of 36) and not individually would be a deal killer for me. I'll be sticking with my one palette of 18 selected (mainly) W&N professionals and second palette of three sets of Schminke supergranulators. I can still see positives with these though. I can see how their staining quality would make them attractive to someone who would rather glaze than mix on either the paper or the palette. And the viscosity looks promising when it comes to rewetting although without viridian in the set they've sidestepped the most problematic colour! And it's good to see that none of alizarin crimson, opera rose and white made it into the set. So I don't dislike them enough to be able to tell a new artist that they'd made a mistake investing in these. If I'm the name picked out to win the dot chart, please do a redraw so the freebie can go to someone who will appreciate it more than me.
@LizChadertonArt
Жыл бұрын
Thanks Steve. They are lovely paints and a step up from Cottman in my opinion. The range of colours and unusual pigments are interesting. As a fan of granulation, I agree it’s a shame. I have since used them in a piece which relied on lifting, and they are stubborn, so I may use them on watercolour canvas next. The big downside is the lack of open stock. If your name comes out of the clever software, I will redo!

There are a few reasons that I would not use these paints by Paul Rubens. Firstly, as you pointed out Liz, whether relatively new to watercolour painting like I am or with decades of experience, you develop favourites. Not being able to buy individual tubes ... and wasting others … is nonsensical and extremely wasteful. Secondly, I take issue to Chinese marketing and their growing habit of taking on western branding names to fool the public into supporting their economy. Also note the false/misleading marketing you pointed out in their brochure implying an association with a European company that they do not have. I have little to no trust in their quality control. When China has had issues of toxic ingredients in their foods making people sick and even killing people, how do we know their paints aren’t toxic in some way? And finally, I’d rather support existing paint manufacturers in countries where they have far fewer human rights issues, do not have a corrupt dictatorial government which is escalating tensions in the region in much the same way as Russia has in eastern Europe. For the same reasoning I will not purchase St Petersburg/White Knights paints. . renamed in an attempt to hide their connection to the blood shed of their corrupt dictatorial government? Just saying … there are more ethical choices to be made.

Thank you for making such interesting points. To be fair, they don’t hide their Chinese origin. There is prominent Chinese writing on their packaging, and most Westeners would struggle with a Chinese brand name, so it makes marketing sense. In terms of quality control, certain pigments are toxic. That is a chemical fact eg cadmium’s and cobalts are heavy metals. There was a move to ban cadmium pigments which was heavily resisted by the art community. So ingesting paints, wherever they are produced is inadvisable. With regards to the country of origin, I would not buy Russian paints. Individuals need to decide whether they only want to buy items from their own country, whether they will buy from other countries they agree with politically or whether they wish to boycott certain regimes. It is a personal decision, but vital to consider.
