Paul is exactly right about James Brown. I first saw him at the Cleveland Arena in 1967 as a white teenager and I was literally shell shocked by the dynamism, talent, and energy I saw that night. I'll never forget it!

I remember in the late 60s as a kid everyone was in the kitchen at dinner at my cousins but someone saw James brown on a show doing cold sweat. everyone ran to the TV set just to see the performance. was only 10 at the time and still remember being blown away by that performance. The white community may have had Elvis but us in the black community had James Brown no one could compare to him for us

Let me tell you how very proud northern ontario and Thunder Bay are of our son, Paul Schaffer. You have been fortunate enough to play with some of the most superb talents in the music industry and you, sir, rank up there with them. Thank you for all the musical pleasure you gave to us and once again, how very proud we are of you.

Paul Shaffer will go down in history as one of the best, for what he has done in music. No matter what the occasion, the special concerts with ex Beatles and everybody you could name, Paul Shaffer was there. Bravo, Paul. God bless you.

Thank you Mr. Paul Shaffer for such a great interview regarding James Brown. Not to take anything away from your bands, from SNL to Letterman, I mean you guys could play anything and make a 4 person band sound like 10. Thank you sir.

That performance on Letterman by Jame Brown WAS ABSOLUTELY ELECTRIC. Disclaimer: I cannot convey how strongly I despise the "Not as great as it used to be Back When" trope that springs up on any video performance by an artist from an era 10 years back and beyond. I think it is a little self-absorbed...at least a little. But when I saw "Greatest Musical Moments" for Paul Shaffer...I knew he simply HAD to mention that gig by James Brown, even if only among shoutouts about other performances by other musicians. Paul Shaffer, I think, made Letterman the "cool" "hep" show it was, at least in the show's early days. Shaffer had folks dropping in to play with his band all the time, because they loved doing the gig so much.

I get how you feel about the "Not as great..." thing but for me there are moments. Like this James Brown performance, Dire Straits Alchemy, Megadeth live in Argentina, the night Thriller premiered, the night MJ Moonwalked. You just can't ever predict or re-create those moments. They're just really special and seems to have a magic about them.

No one can deny that the 82 letterman performance with Hiram, Steve , Paul and two of the J.B's was nothing but the epitome of a raw, brilliant connection. Don't understand why the bassist was struggling with the one count. Other than that...

Respect to James Brown but the Wilson Pickett performance in 1986 was absolutely phenomenal.
