Do you think you could turn your lunch bag into $20 million?
After her twenty-four year marriage came crashing to an end, Paula Dean was almost homeless and left with virtually nothing. She had two teenage boys and no marketable expertise or education to help her provide for her little family. Having only $200 to her name she was faced with the choice of spending it on food until it was gone, or investing it somewhere in an attempt to improve her situation. Maybe it was because food was on her mind or because it was the only resource she had access to, Dean took her meager funds and bought a cooler, lunch meat, paper bags, a business license and started a company called The Bag Lady. She would get up early in the morning and make 100 sandwiches. Then she would send her sons to walk up and down the business district of Savannah Georgia selling their bagged lunches to local professionals. Although it was hard work, by connecting to the profit channel of resources, Dean was able to put food on her own table. Because “The Bag Lady” sandwiches were not only convenient, they were also tasty, Dean’s company grew a loyal client base. After surveying her customers she decided to add deliverable home cooked meals. Once again she connected to the resources she had available to produce marketable menu items. Eventually, her little business out grew her small kitchen and she needed a larger facility to make her sandwiches and home cooked lunches. Because she did not have the funds to build a larger kitchen, Dean had to get creative. She had visited the local Best Western and knew they were not fully utilizing their kitchen resources. She reached out to the manager and initiated a mastermind meeting with him. She knew that she was a very cook, so she offered to help him with his recipes and menu. In exchange she negotiated access to his kitchen resources when they were not in use by the hotel staff. Dean continued with this arrangement for the next 5 years. Although it was very helpful to her business, she was still not making the income she wanted. Dean decided to form a new mastermind with her two sons and a savvy financial planner. The purpose of their mastermind was to figure out a way to open her own restaurant. They came up with a financial plan for a profitable restaurant, however Dean had not saved enough to put a deposit on a building. So once again she got creative and connected to the resources she had available. Through her mastermind she was introduced to the owner of a building in downtown Savannah that offered to let her remodel his building in exchange for the deposit and first month’s rent. She and her son’s used their own resources, which saved the necessary money for them to complete the remodel and launch the new restaurant. The Lady and Son’s restaurant, the name chosen by Dean’s mastermind group, was an immediate hit. She was finally able to provide good income for her family. However, she wasn’t done yet.
Because of the popularity of Dean’s menu items, she decided to write a cookbook. Once finished she sent out copies and met with some publishers. Unfortunately she couldn’t get anyone to publish her book. Instead of giving up, she decided to put together the resources and self-publish her first cookbook. Through Dean’s resourcefulness and by connecting to the other profit channels she was able to get onto QVC to promote her book. People fell in love with her southern charm and folksy personality. Her book became a bestseller and attracted the attention of the Food Network which gave her a guest appearance in 1999. Because Dean continued to mastermind with the right people and connect to all six profit channels she landed her own show on the Food Network. She went on to write 14 books that have sold over 8 million copies. Today her monthly magazine has over 1 million subscribers and the “The Bag Lady” from Savannah now has a net worth of $20 million.
