We are delighted to invite you to an exclusive selling exhibition of signed original lithographs by Paula Rego from her Jane Eyre suite. Opening on Saturday 20th May, this is a rare opportunity to view and buy Rego's powerful work, and we are sure that you will find the exhibition both engaging and inspiring.
The signed lithographs on offer here are from the collection of the great master printmaker, Stanley Jones. The Jane Eyre suite, in particular, is a remarkable collection of prints, inspired by the iconic novel of the same name by Charlotte Brontë, that showcases Rego's skill as a printmaker and her unique interpretation of the classic text.
The work will be available to view in the gallery and online. There will be a guided exhibition walkthrough film on Goldmark TV and a fully illustrated catalogue available to purchase, with essay by Laura Gascoigne.
Paula Rego (1935-2022) was a Portuguese-born painter and printmaker particularly known for her paintings and prints based on storybooks and is widely considered one of the most significant contemporary artists of her generation. Born in Lisbon, Rego moved to London with her husband, the artist Victor Willing, in the 1950s, where she continued her artistic education at the Slade School of Fine Art.
Over the course of her career, Rego developed a distinctive style that was characterised by a bold use of colour, a strong narrative element, and a fascination with the human form and its relationship to society. Her work often drew on her personal experiences and cultural background, as well as her interests in literature and social issues.
Paula Rego's work has been widely exhibited in galleries and museums around the world, including the Tate Gallery in London, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Centro de Arte Moderna in Lisbon. She was awarded numerous honours and accolades for her contribution to the art world, including being appointed as a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2010.
Rego's work is highly regarded for its powerful and often unsettling imagery, which explores themes such as gender, sexuality, and the human condition. Her use of allegory and storytelling has made her work highly accessible and engaging to a wide range of audiences, and her legacy continues to inspire and influence contemporary artists and art lovers alike.
Please take this rare opportunity to see this remarkable suite in the flesh here at the gallery in Uppingham and to acquire her work for your wall.
