You have to understand that Pavarotti was more than an opera singer, he was a lover of all music and he invited the best in nearly every genre of music to perform with him in his annual charity event in his home town of Modena, Italy. I love that the best tenor in the world and the best blues singer in the world share a stage. Was it a little strange, maybe, but altogether marvelous!!!!!

I can’t count the number of times I’ve watched this video, and it’s absolutely amazing! I have seen the‘Pavarotti and Friends’ concert video as well, and he performed with James Brown, Elton John, Eric Clapton, Celine Dion, and many others. This one is my personal favorite! I’m 67 years old now and was trained as a classical pianist and organist since I was 5. Due to arthritis in my hands and fingers, I haven’t been able to play for some years, but I have always liked all types and genres of music (except for rap, which isn’t imo). I have a tendency to be a bit critical bc of my background, but this is priceless! Seeing two legends together on stage and singing and playing their hearts out doesn’t get any better! This is the first time I’ve ever seen Pavarotti smile so much, and also I noticed that he was even doing a little 2-step dance jig while listening to the King of Blues - BB King! I’ve never seen him do anything like this before - he usually stands up straight and almost never moves his body. He was smiling from ear to ear and looked as though he was in awe of him. I don’t know where this video has been hiding, but I’m thrilled to have found it on KZitem, in addition to the other duets that Pavarotti did, many of them were for a benefit too. It’s one thing to be able to ‘play’ an instrument (or to sing), but it’s not the same as ‘making music’. That’s only accomplished if you put your heart and soul into it and feel it! That’s what these two did - if you watch BBK, you’ll see that he keeps his eyes closed, doesn’t make contact with the audience, and just ‘feels’ the music he’s playing and singing. It’s the same with Pavarotti - he too doesn’t make much eye contact with the audience. It’s a shame that this video doesn’t have the publicity it deserves, and I’m still hunting for more like this ‘hidden’ gem and the one I mentioned (and saved!) earlier in my comment. Two geniuses at the same time - who would have ever thought it would be these two? For anyone else that enjoys this great combo, check out the other duets with Pavarotti - they are also priceless!

I first heard this in 72 or 73 when BB King was not well known in Canada.. I saw him live at a small club on the waterfront in Toronto.. got to shake his hand.. I saw him many times in many cities over the last 40 years.. Still brings a tear.. and this shows all the " know it alls" how good music is good music no matter the style or if its classic or blues or what ever.. good is good.. and this.. is one of the best. RIP Mr. King.. glad I got to shake your hand and say hi..

@richardharrold9736

I'd argue B.B. King was more significant to his genre than Pavarotti. Luciano was just a very good opera singer, somewhat restricted in style and couldn't act, but utterly superb in his comfort zone... whereas B.B. King was simply the boss, did more to advance and expand the traditional blues than anyone else. Everyone who picks up a guitar and plays the blues is influenced by King, which is more than can be said for Pavarotti. Don't mistake me, I am NOT bashing Pavarotti, he was nothing short of magnificent at his best, but King was probably the most influential guitarist of all time. Him, Les Paul and Hendrix are probably the top three.

there are too many great guitarists: segovia, tommy emmanuel, wes montogomery, joe satriani, django reinhardt, reverend gary davis, robert johnson, buddy guy, jeff beck, van halen, davy graham, chet atkins, doc watson, alan holdsworth, mc laughlin, joe pass, jim hall, joh renbourn, baden powell... i could keep on for two days, may be ;-) so i don't know if BB King is THE boss; he is a very good bluesman... BB King is a great musician both in singing and playing, pavarotti is a great singer in a very difficult style; to sing an opera is very hard, you must spend a lot of time in learning how to sing and a lot of time studying what that single opera is pavarotti was humble and clever because he put together different kinds of music, usually opera's fan are very aggressive if you are not perfect and they don't love pop music of course in classical music the geniuses are verdi, mozart, wagner and so on these concerts are a very good way to show that music has no barriers because every kind of good music is good music all IMHO, and sorry for my english :-(

I agree with you 100%. But there is also an audio recording here on youtube of BB and Hendrix on stage together at a club in NY city. They took turns swapping lead and rhythm guitar in what the old bluesmen called a "shootout." It is the only time i have heard BB King actually show what he is capable of doing on guitar. Hendrix took it to another level also. It was apparently recorded on an old dictaphone reel to reel recorder with a cheap mic, so the audio quality is terrible. But the guitar performances are beyond anything i have heard before or since by any musician. I'm a lifelong guitar player, so i have listened to them all. The expertise both demonstrated is mind numbing. I am pretty sure i could distinguish between the sound of BB's humbuckers on "Lucile" and the single coils on Hendrix's strat. But there is no way to pick who won. I just have to say it's the 2 best performances on guitar i have heard in my life - bar none.

Although I’m not a guitarist, I agree with you 100%! I’m 67 years old now and was a classically trained pianist and organist since I was 5. I haven’t been able to play for some years due to arthritis in my hands and fingers, but I listen to all genres of music every day from morning till night. My point is that it’s the same with any instrument - playing a lot of notes and doing it quickly, isn’t what makes a person a true musician! That’s only accomplished when they put all they’ve got into the music - their heart and soul, along with the emotion that’s within them! Perhaps I’m overly critical and others might disagree with this thinking, but I wanted to remark on your comment. Watching the two most talented musicians/singers of their type - the King of Opera and the King of Blues - together on the same stage, and doing this particular song, is priceless imo! Another example of what your statement implies would be to relate it to Eric Clapton, aka Mr. Slowhands, and how he plays - slow but fabulous in every note/string he plucks (picks?). (I don’t know if ‘string’ is the correct word since I’m not a guitarist, but my point is that I agree with you.)
