Having a pawn majority could mean victory! Learning how to properly anticipate, play around and use your majority is crucial to improving middlegame play.
A pawn majority is when a player has more pawns than his opponent on one side of the board. If you split the board in half, dividing it to the kingside and the queenside, a majority can be achieved on either one of the halves.
It’s usually considered that a queenside majority is vastly superior due to the fact that the opposite side’s king will have a rough time defending it, but this principle only applies if the kings have castled kingside. A majority is significant regardless of the side it’s on, and it should be utilized properly.
A key thing is that you use your pawn majority as a strength; a strong weapon which is going to distract your opponent from developing ideas of his own, and which is going to give you a clear strategic plan in the middlegame.
The first step to achieving that is to be aware that one exists! Most players don’t win using a pawn majority simply because they don’t think about it during the game. I would advise you to look at your middlegame positions thinking about whether there’s a pawn majority for either player, whether there’s potential for one arising and if your conclusion benefits you or not. Doing this will make you much more aware and it will open up your eyes to possibilities which could bring you victory!
Most people think about tactics or simply which move to make next, but having long term strategic plans is a great way to broaden your understanding of a position and to gain an edge over your narrow-sighted opponent who is to be amazed once your seemingly harmless b-pawn reaches the 7th rank all of the sudden! Planning is the key to winning, and pawn majorities can be planned ahead!
You can even choose openings from which a pawn majority will arise. The Berlin endgame and the Tarrasch French with c5 are great examples, but there are many more. Plan out your opening repertoire considering pawn majorities, learn how to utilize one, and you will soon find yourself having easy middlegames with clear plans. As if it were move 5!
