I went to SC dental and did PBL. I really did not learn a lot from it. I honestly learned from reading like crazy on my own. USC It's pretty expensive for teaching yourself dentistry.

@@ErikaCorreaYou learn the real world after graduation. It all depends on the field you get into. I did peds and I definitely learned that outside of school. I love what I do; and, you’ll be very successful once you start working. Good luck!

Where do your "problems" come from? Are they brought by the facilitator? Are they real life or made up situations? Can you give an example?
@ErikaCorrea

They are brought by the facilitator. I think most of them are real cases that we use to learn. Some could be made up or exaggerated.

Hey thanks for the video! Just wondering if the science courses are Biology only? or we have to do PBL for chemistry courses too?

We don't have any chemistry lectures so everything will be covered in PBL. PBL is mostly biology though.

Hello! I'm also a pre-dental student, and this was a very useful video to see! I was wondering did your studying habits or techniques change or not change in dental school?
@ErikaCorrea
5 жыл бұрын
The way I take notes in dental school definitely changed. I used to always hand write my notes but the professors go through slides really fast and it's hard to keep up. The lights are also turned off in the lecture hall so I can't actually see my handwritten notes. I take all my notes on my computer now. I use "Microsoft One Note" to take my notes and I love it so much! You can upload PDFs onto One Note and it makes life easier.

Hi Erika, thanks for the video, it was super interesting. Right now my Physical Chemistry course is using something that sounds similar to what you described called POGIL (Process Oriented Guuded Inquiry Learning). What I've noticed is that sometimes the students don't learn all the material the professor wants us to understand, which we discover during the exams. Is that largely the same for your classes/something major to worry about?
@ErikaCorrea
4 жыл бұрын
Yes! This happened a lot in the beginning. Maybe even for an entire year of dental school. Although, in dental school all of the material repeats. I ended up doing a lot better with time and ended up memorizing a lot more this way.

I am starting Dental School at USC and this was soooo helpful! Thank you. I have a feeling that I won’t like PBL too much because it forces me to teach myself topics that could come up on the boards! Do you feel comfortable in taking your boards? Let me know :)
@ErikaCorrea

Hi Isaiah, You're going to have to take the new integrated boards which are going to be similar to PBL exams apparently. All the topics we learn are things that will come up in the board exams so hopefully it will prepare me. I don't know much about boards and I'm still deciding on whether I should take part 1 and part 2 of boards or if I should take the integrated boards. We're the only class that is given the option. Congrats on USC!

I feel problem based learned helps reinforce the material in a very novel way! Universities are changing their curriculum more and more to match this style of learning. Awesome to see USC is already doing it and pioneering the way!

Is PBL embedded throughout all 4 years?
@ErikaCorrea
Жыл бұрын
It’s for the first 3 years but there is way less time spent in PBL during 3rd year. For example, instead of having PBL for 4 hours a day twice a week during first year, it is only 2 hours, every other week during 3rd year.

@@brookerobinson7966 I just turned 25 a couple days ago so I'm pretty ready for it now! If I were to take the test when I was 24 it would be a different story because they require more out of you if you're younger. I have to be able to do 47 sit ups, 15 push ups , and run 1.5 mile in under 15:45min to be satisfactory. I'm pretty solid on the sit ups and push ups because I do a lot of that in yoga. I don't run much but I ran my hardest the other day and was under 14min so... I should be fine :) If you have the HPSP you don't take it until you graduate.
