The reason they add the 16:9 aspect ratio option is for people like myself who play these mini consoles through an old 4:3 CRT TV using a HDMI converter. If you play it on 4:3 through the mini console on a 4:3 CRT TV it squashes the image even further down to something resembling 2:3 ‐ but if you set the console to 16:9 on a 4:3 CRT TV it stretches the image out to fill the entire 4:3 CRT screen - therefore making it the 'proper' aspect ratio, so to speak. I hope that makes sense!

I think everyone should find themselves a cheap CRT TV (people chuck them in the trash nowadays) a cheap scart-hdmi converter off Ebay or Amazon or something, and play these mini consoles the way they should look! Screw the CRT filters they put on the consoles, they are all rubbish. The only one that even came close to looking like CRT was the NES classic, the CRT filter on that was actually pretty good.. but nothing beats a proper CRT screen

There's actually a very good reason for the "stretch" feature on these mini consoles, although it's a bit niche, I imagine. For a completely authentic experience, I have this one and my other mini consoles feeding their input to a high quality authentic CRT television, which is of course 4:3. Using "stretch" mode on these puts them into a perfectly aligned full screen. Without that mode, you get an image that's perpetually crushed in between black bars. Quite frankly, I'm quite glad they included that mode.

Nice one. Working CRTs are rare enough these days, nevermind ones with HDMI ports (I didn't even know they made them). Definitely look after that one. I have a couple of CRTs I keep ahold of in case my current TV breaks or something. They don't have HDMI but I have some old consoles I can hook up (they look better on a CRT anyway, especially the N64). I would have them set up all the time for an authentic experience but I don't really have the space in my livingroom. Wish I still had my old TV from when I was a kid, it was one of the ones with a knob you turned to tune into channels. I used to sit in front of it for hours playing my PSX. Good times...

With Rondo it becomes obvious that the native (integer) screen option (the one Ashens finds to look too "slim") is actually the right one, especially visible on the carriage's wheels right in the game's prologue. A European Turbografx Mini (without 16) would have been more officially accurate since the machine had at least an official release in the UK. But there were also the Sodipeng French imported units that were just Japanese units adapted to SECAM/PAL TVs and were also sold as imports in other EU countries. Many of those imports were Coregrafx units later on, so I think this Mini is kind of historically accurate if not officially so. But that's probably just coincidental.

This is my favourite out of the mini consoles right now, just barely ahead of the Mega Drive Mini. Pretty much every game is passable at worst and there are a lot of fantastic classics on there. Plus, I'm a total sucker for easter eggs, so the fact it has a couple secret games as well as modified versions of regular ones on top of the great presentation makes it a winner in my book.

YS has become a massive adventure across various platforms. Many don't like it as you don't fight the normal way as you run into enemies rather than push buttons in the early versions so people find it odd

The Ys series started out on the PC Engine and is a series that's still going, with it's most recent entry, Ys IX coming out last year on the PS4 in Japan only. It's not a well known series to many, I mean Ys VIII sold a combined sales number of 800,000 units on PS4 and Switch and that was the best selling one apparently. I got introduced into the series with the 8th game on Switch, a good introduction if you want to play something more modern, I do recommend it

Have you made a video about the Philips CD-i before? I hope for all KZitem Poopers here online, we might be encountering an announcement in the future for a mini CD-i because of my life in quarantine and not only that but also my life on watching KZitem Poop videos involving Zelda and Mario.
@alfo2804

What would a CD-i Mini have on it, though? _The Flowers of Robert Maplethorpe?_ Nintendo would never let them put any of the Zelda games or Hotel Mario on it, so it wouldn't have anyone buying it for memetic value. Their best bet would probably be to just make a 1:1 reproduction of the original unit that plays the original games, not a novelty mini console. It'd be purely for preservationists, but certainly a guaranteed way to get a working CD-i.
@theflipflapchannelcreatedb8160

It's absolutely true that after the famous YTPs in the late 2000s era of nostalgia, I sadly have to say that Nintendo's assets on the Philips CD-i would be an impossible reciprocation to do so if there's a mini CD-i. However, if there's going to be a new mini CD-i with Zelda games and Hotel Mario in it. would it be possible again for Philips to be with Nintendo officially, partially or not? Plus, Hotel Mario would have been dubbed by Charles Martinet and if possible of not, the Zelda games would have been either remastered (maybe except for Zelda's Adventure) or rereleased. I would say that the Zelda CD-i voices if there's a remake here, in my opinion would be even more worse than the original one we have now like we KZitem Poopers love the original voice actors of the CD-i Zelda games. Gameplay would have been better and so would be animating and music but I feel that the voice acting not as good as the original. NEVERTHELESS, WITH THAT SAID, TIME WILL TELL OR NOT WHENEVER A NEW MINI CD-I CLASSIC WOULD BE THERE OR NOT!

The original console was one of those things I learned about through the Special Reserve catalogue, a thing of wonder. That's both the catalogue and the PC Engine as a thing of wonder. From the name I thought it was some sort of super stripped down PC that would only play games.

35:29 What is odd about Ninja Ryuukenden is that it actually has a cheat code to change the game to a secret English or Chinese localization of the game (odd that Hudson Soft didn't release it in the west on the Wii VC, even though they printed the code on their old VC PCE site so they were aware of it, and such they could've easily rereleased it). And the English is actually different from the NES version. Which is weird they'd bother for something few probably would've seen back in the day.

25:38, someone might have mentioned it already, but I believe the game you're looking for is Magical Chase. Fantastic SHMUP. Personally, I'm a little preferably to Star Parodier and Blazing Lazers, but they're all fantastic times.
