I did not expect you to aknowledge the PC Engine was released in Italy as well as in France and UK. In facts it was hyped in computer magazines like The Games Machine as early as in 1987 and planned or at least teased to be officially released here. Sadly all we got was super costly units to be purchased via mail or in import stores located in bigger cities only. Magazines like C+VG would regularly review Engine games (praising to no end the likes of Street Fighter 2 and Rondo of Blood) so it felt like it was really here. But I've never seen anything PC engine related in the wild myself. In facts one of the reasons I preordered the Mini was because it was so easy to get it, one click on Amazon and it would have partially alleviated my never forgotten NEC related frustrations of the 90's. Looking forward for it to arrive in December.

Another great video ! TG16 was sold exclusively at Radio Shack in the early 90s here in Canada, my first cd game experience was on this console with the excellent Ys Book 1&2. This game had a huge impact on me, it had anime cutscene (which I was a big fan of at the time) and awesome music . Been a fan of Falcom and Ys series since then. I would've loved if they added Valis 3 at least I love the Valis series .

I confirm that France loves the PC Engine. Videogames were clearly targetting child (at least Nintendo). The PC Engine was more the teenager/young adult system but at that time, teens were not too much into videogames. If you look at the numbers, they will not seem big but indeed, it was mentioned in all the French magazine at the time. I had (yes, had) a PC Engine but I stil have my PC Engine GT bought in France! Buying import games was easy in France (even if not cheap). Any videogame system owner at the time, would have an accessory to play them (especially on Super Nintendo, I still have my AD-29).

@@GTV-Japan The secret for why Japan is so big in France is pretty simple : it was THE kid show at the time, "Le Club Dorothée". The legend is that someone from the show was in Japan for a trip, saw animes on TV and asked to buy the right for it. At the time, even Toei animation didn't get the importance of it. They sold the rights for so cheap that instead of buying only 1 anime, they bought dozen and dozen, without understanding what they were buying. Its how France discovered Dragon Ball in 1988! But this is also how little me, 12-year, discovered Hokuto no ken!!! Yep, they had no clue what they were showing us! LOL. No complain, even as kids, the only thing we will do, is mimic the gesture and imagine the head exploding in our heads. But my favorite anime of the time, and its the case for a lot of kids that were teens or pre-teens back then, is Saint Seiya. What a show. This explains why many businesses in France tried to diffuse japan culture and product in France. Japan (and the rights owner) had no clue how universal were most of their cultural products!

That 500K figure (for Coregrafx sold in France) is actually surprisingly high. For the US market NEC manufactured just 750K Turbografx for the first production batch but that was all they had manufactured in the end because the console was unsuccessful. In Italy there was some article in gaming mags about the PC Engine but I've never seen one in the wild (probably only import shops handled it). For instance Neo Geo AES/CD had more presence in Italy because there was an official distributor (a small company from Naples).

When CEX was good back in the day, there was 3 stores in London, 1 in Brum and 1 in Sheffield, 1 of the London stores was a ‘Retro’ only shop(RetroExchange/REX) use to get the train from Worcester to London, would take 3hours, the journey home was always killer, would have 1 or 2 new games and for 3hours Id have to read(or look at the pictures if it was all in Japanese) the cover/covers over and over! lol the good old days! It's what got me into buying imported games from Japan, because I had a Turbo Duo and you could play the Japanese CD-ROMs on a U.S. system. I even minored in Japanese in college specifically so I could play and understand the games -- true story. Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys, Legend of Xanadu I & II, Dracula X, Star Parodier, Emerald Dragon, so many great games. But my favorite game of all time is Gate of THUNDER!!!

Gaijillionaire, hi, nice hearing from you. I’m open to chatting, but not keen on providing my private contact info in an open forum. So I'll just tell my story here. My life has taken quite a journey to get me where I am today. In 1980, I was in high school and I sat next to a kid who's dad had an arcade game route. Somehow, we got on the subject of arcade games since I always liked the Atari 2600 and he told me his dad owned a company called Rome Vending. He ended up getting me a Wico catalog (arcade supplier) and I bought the parts and built a FOOSBALL table from scratch. I was so fascinated by coin-op games that I wanted to do more. So my dad bought me a Gotlieb Haunted House pinball machine. After enjoying it for a while, I decided I wanted to make it a multi ball game, like the Williams pinballs. So I taught myself how to program and I reprogrammed the Haunted House game to have a multi ball. Still, I wanted more. So when I was 17, I built a real Pac Man arcade game from scratch. I was hooked! I started programming more and doing arcade game repair for many route operators in California. Eventually, I started a company in 1989 called Micrologic Data Systems. My first product was a 4-in-1 arcade game controller that allowed 4 separate games to be put in one cabinet. I jokingly called it "FOUR-PLAY" and I sold it in Replay Magazine. Another company, United Amusements, was contacted by NEC to develop the PC-ENGINE for the coin-op market and since they were only "distributers" of games, they in turn contacted my company and we formed a joint venture. They marketed, and we (meaning I) did the engineering. Ken Wirt, the VP of marketing for NEC here in America was our "point-man". To keep the home market (Turbografix 16) separate from the coin-op market, NEC allowed us to use the PC-ENGINE here in America. Because of this, I was exposed to great Japanese game titles that the American home market never saw! It puzzled me why NEC chose to keep the great Japanese games away from the American consumer. I saw the failure of Turbografix 16 from the inside, witnessing a game system that was inexplicably introduced to America AFTER the Christmas season, and with few game titles that were mostly inferior. Ultimately, Ken Wirt was scapegoated for the failure of Turbogrfix 16 and the PC-ENGINE arcade market that oversaw failed because several of the titles we were pushing to coin-op were in Japanese! When the arcade market collapsed, I moved into casino gaming. That's where I am today. I design casino games (when I'm not unemployed due to Coronavirus).

Well since all of these modern mini's system on a chip have frame buffers, not to mention emulation software cores running on-top of the rom code, the only way to offset lag with emulation is to use an implementation called 'run-ahead' available: in retroarch GUI, but it is very taxing on CPU cycles, sadly the SOC chips in the mini consoles don't have enough CPU overhead to reduce latency.

Once again brother, you’ve nailed it with another fantastic video. Sucks me right in with the breaks and everything and I always look forward to them. This is right up my alley in terms of the Japanese games. I was bummed when I saw awhile back that snatcher isn’t going to be in English. I’m kinda in the minority but visual novels are one of my favorite genres. Metal slader glory I had a blast with (famicom version). If they ever mod them system to allow for translated roms, would you consider doing it to your pc engine? A bummer they didn’t add the rondo of blood translation on there for Americans. Somebody hacked the pc engine rom adding the english audio. Would’ve been cool to have that. I’ve been seriously contemplating getting this

Is the PC Engine (regular or mini) worth it for someone who plays RPGs or adventures? I don't know much about the system because it always seemed to me that it was more "platforms and shooters" oriented. There are a few PC Engine Hudson RPGs re-released on the Saturn, like Gulliver Boy (which I finished and liked it quite a lot) or AnEarth Fantasy Stories (which I don't have yet), so excluding those, is there anything else? Tengai Makyou 2 sounds interesting (in fact, I have Tengai Makyou 4 on the Saturn but haven't played it yet) but it's also available on other systems (I think PS2 and GameCube have an updated port) Also, could you make a video on the PC-FX some day? I'm curious about what the system was like and its story in general but nobody talks about it.
@GTV-Japan

Gate of Thunder and Legendary Axe were huge misses being omitted from this. I understand not putting SFII because then a whole new controller would’ve needed to be sold, and that’s a tough sell for another $20 for 1 old game, and putting it on there with the standard controller would’ve just pissed or confused people.

I can't believe Bonk 2 and 3 aren't on this machine. As far as TG16 goes, I knew ONE person in my town that had one during its original run. I thought it as cool the games were on credit cards (HUCARDS), the graphics and music did come off as being above the standard NES fare at the time, and the lone game I played on it was Bonk. When the TG16 games hit the WiiVC I bought a ton of the games. Bonk 1-3 were fantastic, Bomberman's two games were excellent (5P option and being able to use AI opponents was super cool), I liked the two Neutopia games (even if they were direct Zelda rip offs), I enjoyed the Ys games too, and I liked the two Crush pinball games a lot. I also got into Chew Man Fu, Ninja Spirit, Lords of Thunder, Air Zonk, and Star Parodier. I liked enough from that experience that when they announced this mini I was in ( I already had NES, SNES, and Genesis ones). Lord of Thunder, with that metal music soundtrack was pretty cool too.

The whole coronavirus thing does have the whole world on edge and it has caused an impact with the release of this mini console in other regions, though if pre-orders went well in other regions for the TurboGrafix and CoreGrafx mini consoles, then hopefully once this is all over (when it will all end if still up in the air) they will still be distributed and sold. I understand though that being Amazon exclusives could harm sales and will probably won't be as high as those from Nintendo, Sega and Sony, but perhaps Konami intended it to be an Amazon exclusive as they had fewer projections in mind and fewer units being sold, but if orders were good enough, they could change their minds later? They could possibly release a mini for other variants of the PC Engine family (like a PC Duo Mini for example) with more games and a mixture between Hu card and CD-ROM games like with these models and the possible addition of a Turbo Controller, or again maybe they'll sell one separately depending on demand and such? It's still early doors yet, made more complicated due to the outbreak, but still who knows what will happen in the future. This is technically Konami just getting their feet wet in the Mini console market, hopefully despite the outbreak, it was worth it and that they'll continue. :)

There is almost no information anywhere online about whether we can avoid buying the expansive extra controllers (update: 1 video) and the multitap sold by konami on amazon japan. In other words, will generic usb hub and or 3rd party wired usb controllers work with these 3 minis (PCE or TG16 or CG)? On my TG16 mini, I tried 3 different wired USB controllers (sega genesis mini 6 button and 3 button controllers and playstation classic controller) and they did NOT work. I also tried a targus 4 port usb 2.0 hub with the TG16 mini controller and it also didn't work. It seems konami/hori has done this to force purchase of their expensive peripherals, but it would be helpful to know if some other 3rd party personals (wired, not wireless) would work before ordering expensive peripherals from Konami on amazon Japan. Please try out any peripherals you have and post here or anywhere online and or provide links here to any information on this. I can't believe the units have been reviewed by many and yet nobody has mentioned anything about this. It would be a video that would get lots of views ;) The one video (3 days ago) which tests 4 other controllers is helpful but the hori controller that does work is actually more expensive than buying the Konami pc engine mini controller from amazon Japan, after duty/shipping costs, the difference in price is very little so would prefer to get the pc engine controller. Would be helpful if more other usb controllers were tested. And, we need people testing usb hubs and sharing results please.
