A tip for you: If you ever consider upgrading your laptop, choose the highest gpu model (for example choose rtx 3080 instead of rtx 3070) that is because 3080 has more cuda cores which makes it more efficient. For example if both are using 80W of power rtx 3070 gets 13tflops performance while rtx 3080 gets 15tflops!! Also: 16 hour gaming ONLY at full load which %99 of games dont use, normally when playing a AAA title(like cyberpunk), your gpu will be max and cpu will be at half-ish so you will get more than 16 hours. And if you do light gaming(like warcraft) you will get waay more than 16 hours :D

This is amazing. You really don't see van lifers like you too often who have nice gaming setups. I myself have a 'gaming setup' in my full time camper. However, it pales not only in comparison to yours but to the expectation of what I eventually want (as far as power is concerned... I'm actually quite happy with my laptop) Like you, I also have a gaming laptop. However, mine is an Asus Rog Zephyrous. It was the best option for me, being small and relatively light while being powerful enough to run basically any game I wanted while also within a price range I was comfortable with. And while its draw is much lower than yours (anywhere between 50-150 watts, pending what game I'm playing), my battery and solar setup are lacking. I have a the Ecoflow River Pro and a 100 watt solar panel mounted to the top of my car. I do have a 2nd 100 watt foldable solar panel which I can deploy when I am parked and not moving and that connects into parallel with the other panel. On a good day, my 2 solar panels will be able to make up the power loss by my laptop. I eventually want to make it 2 100 watt solar panels mounted to the top of my car along with my foldable for a total of 300 watts. Also former WOW player here. I play ESO now-a-days.

Cool setup! I wonder if it would be possible to make it even more efficient by hooking up the laptop directly to the DC system. The laptop power supply (power brick) takes AC power and converts it to DC, so the power is going DC-AC-DC, and some power is lost as heat at each conversion step. So if you could bypass the power brick and use the DC power directly it might be more efficient. You'd also have to make sure it's the right voltage, of course.
@blakeandrew5058
2 жыл бұрын
It's really not worth the effort and cost though. After your done finding a quality converter that can deliver 240W with a good efficiency, your saving maybe 20-30 Watts for a pretty penny of time and material, whereas you can just add another battery module or solar cell.
@stephanecorriveau6982

With the ridiculous power of gaming laptops nowadays I wholeheartedly agree with your choice. A full-tower setup makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Can confirm the MoFi setup works. Used Mofi as my families main internet for over 1 year. Company I used provided an AT&T based SIM card for it which was good enough for most East coast USA travels. Speeds when at home base were better than local coverage could get as well. Saw 35-50 mbps up, 8-10 mbps down regularly. Mofi was not affected by weather that much either, unless a hurricane came through and knocked out cell service. Mofi is a good option for van life, rv life, farm life etc where the normal cable company or whomever doesn’t have high speed there. I literally worked on a Mofi throughout the entirety of 2020 pandemic doing video calls and much more while my kids were home streaming their Netflix stuff. Check your cell service and check with a company to see who the sim is provided by. Other than that, it’s a solid option to break away from normal at home services.

You are living that good life brother. I reside in a satellite internet only area and I use the MoFi 4500 hotspot router at my home. I just bought a sim card with a grandfathered AT&T plan (best for my area) which has an unlimited, actually unlimited, hotspot plan. Since i'm running off LTE towers, the speeds are only 40 down, 2 up, 60ms ping but i'm able to play games without any lag. The plan is only $75/month so it beats $120/month for high ping satellite internet.

Stumbled across this video and i love it. Im from the UK and so i have solar panels but never enough sun to really charge anything. I work all aroind the country and i made it a priority to get my gaming rig in my van. But its not just any gaming rig. I have a full racing sim with 2 monitors and vr that i use. For the vr i also play games like beatsaber within my van. My battery bank tho to play and do other is a total of 935AH in lead acid batteries and i have been like this for 3 years now. I ocasionally stream from my van with my internet also that i have hooked to the van. I pplan in the future to replace my lead acid batteries for lithium ion and increase my bank to 1200AH so i can do some of the bigger endurance races that i like to get involved with. Good to see another gamer on the road. Time to binge watch your channel

I am 52 years old. I will be retiring in 3 years at the age of 55. This is my plan. I intend to sell everything I own and buy an RV and just drive around the continent until I either get bored or die. I am a gamer as well. This is very well done and exactly what I am looking to do. Hopefully in 3 or 4 more years when I am ready, technology will have improved even further to make this easier. Thanks for this video and enjoy it.

You should look into dc/dc converter to power the laptop and others. Since electronics run on dc. Right now you are converting DC from battery to AC with the inverter then back to DC with the Laptops power brick adding up power loss each time.

I think your setup is perfect. A 2070 is plenty for most games you play, and going with a laptop also saves you around 300 watts. For the m1 Mac mini you could’ve got 32gbs, but you shouldn’t see a major difference in performance, mostly just faster when your multitasking or editing?

today's gaming laptops have superb cooling capabilities. not one of my gaming laptops since 2010 had any issue with temperatures, even when I put them in enclosed spaces under or in my desks. also you can see in the video the laptop is not enclosed and has a grill like structure at the bottom. more than enough airflow.

The only issue that I have with your set up while cool is just watch your alternator because that sometimes can A. Not allow enough charge to your starter battery which will wear it out quicker and 2. Can put a lot more strain on your alternator which will also cause your alternator to got out early

no, the inverter has a huge power loss (about 15watts), even with no load😉 also the pc power supplies. both together have an efficiency of about ...60-70%?
@Azurren
3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, this guy has a fantastic setup so I'm suprised he's overlooked this. So e M1 Mac devices are capable of being powered directly from USB C (avoiding all inverter losses). As for gaming, that maybe a tougher one.. Most powerful gaming laptops draw too much to be powered from even the higher end of the USB power delivery spec and most manufacturers don't offer "car chargers".
@hansdampf2084
3 жыл бұрын
@@Azurren i think, that the power over usb c is 19v, so you need to convert the 12v up to 19v. yes, the car chargers would quickly draw over 10a and many car plugs only deliver 10a. you also can feel the current when you unplug such a notebookcharger, it gets very hot on the contacts
@Azurren
3 жыл бұрын
@@hansdampf2084 USB power delivery can supply up to 20v, the car charges that support the higher end of the spec handle the boosting for you :) But it is as you say. As the majority of cars simply can't supply enough amps through the cigar socket there is no market for gaming laptop chargers. Hence getting your hands on one is almost impossible. Even USB PD usually maxes out at 100watts so that too is a no-go for gaming laptops.

Rack mounted motherboards. Stuff all of the electronics in one electronics rack. Battery, circuit breaker panel, converter, charger, inverter, MPPT, motherboards, PC PS, NAS, KVM switch, all of it in one easily serviced cabinet. The heat from all the components keeps the batteries warm. In the winter vent the heat into the van and in the summer vent the heat out of the van.
