I have tried over 15 cloud backup and storage services and pCloud is far the worst. It is little more than a 'beta' version program, full of flaws and bugs, and with far less essential or useful functions than other programs. pCloud's focus and obsession is on the marketing side, with their never-ending promotions and offers, rather than developing their app. In three years of using it, I have hardly seen any enhancements to it. Yes, three years of them continuing to present paying customers with a half-baked, beta program. The reason pCloud gets positive reviews on some reviews sites or videos is because they make money by being an affiliate of pCloud if they lure people to sign-up! To give you an example, it is the ONLY cloud backup program I know that has no function to enable you to see which of your files are being backed-up. This is obviously a critical feature. For example, your backups sometimes become 'stuck' trying to backup a particular file, such as a larger size one, and don't continue backing up with pCloud. (Superior backup apps then obviously move on to backing up other files and continuing backups. However, pCloud wouldn't bother to have such a function of course and everything grinds to a halt.) You literally are stuck then, as you have no means to identify the file causing the problem. Therefore, with pCloud your ONLY option is to remove all your folder / file syncs and start all over again, selectively adding folders one by one to see which folder has a file that is causing the problem! Worst of all, pCloud has severely damaged the set-up on my hard-drive because, when I have re-synced folders - as pCloud advised me - pCloud 'restored' tens of thousands of files that I had deleted! It had taken me weeks of work to delete those unnecessary files and now I am back to square one. pCloud can't handle the backup of large files too, which are usually the most important ones on their computers. Customer service is appalling. After days of waiting, staff just send you two line responses which don't comprehensively deal with your issue, so you are going back and forth with them for months, or scratching your head trying to find a solution yourself. In a hundred other ways pCloud is a pale imitation other backup services. I have now stopped using pCloud and switched to other services that don't give me any of the headaches and stress that pCloud was month-in month-out. I would strongly advise pCloud to do a root-and-branch usability and functionality audit of their program and pull their finger out to urgently make major improvements to it. Three years of sleeping and doing nothing while your customers suffer is long enough!

I have begun experimenting with large scale backups. However, as of yet I have not had issues with Pcloud. Also opted into their lifetime contract. Which is something I think a lot of cloud storage providers should be trying out. My problem is logistically cloud storage make sense. However, the economics of is hard. Outside of Pcloud. For example take a 5TB platter drive. Yes I still use them for a number of reasons. Seems you know way more than me about technology. SSDs are faster, but have issues of their own. ... Anyway a portable external 5TB. When formatted, may give you 4.5TB or higher. Can cost about $100 to $150. Same for a internal drive. Plus the internal drive from a third party. A decent SSD M.2 or sort of SATA: 1TB $100 to $150. Depending on the technology. 2TB $120 to $200. Depending on the technology. Why do I use these as my baseline? I do not have the links in front of me. But from casual reading on the topic and direct observation. Most people keep photos, small videos, and important documents on their drives. Those can be compressed 5% to 50% depending the file and the compression standard. The reason most plans target 1TB is because most people do not backup. Also most average people have not reached that threshold. I am old enough to remember. When 5GB was a lot of space. Periodically I go though my backups and remove what I do not need. I have brought old 500GB drives out of retirement. Why, because for the moment I can backup all of my critical data. Plus I have been playing with compression software. I have a decade old 1TB; formatted 950GB. That drive cost to $200 when I purchased it. I can afford $70 monthly cloud storage. Enough for Micosofts' OneDrive. However, does it economically make sense when I can a 2TB SSD for under $300? $200 to $300, depending. Or 3TB to 5TB platter drive, for $120 or less. So I do not do it. $840 a year. Check on KZitem. I can build decent gaming rigs for that much. Keep in mind I have a new rig where the parts and software cost twice as much. - www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/onedrive/compare-onedrive-plans?activetab=tab:primaryr1 The only logical reason is perceived and objective value of the information. Combined with workflow. Frankly, for most people I know. Given their homes, family contacts, logistics, etc. paying $70 for cloud storage is expensive. Pcloud.com did a good job attracting people with lifetime storage. Now if they are smart they are investing that money in long time grow investments. That generate revenue. Less reason to have garbage cloud storage when people are on 100 year contracts with you. Build up enough of a following. Their children and grandchildren will spend money on you. It works for Disney! Also look at the storage increases on even midrange phones. I had a phone that had a capacity of 1TB microSD. My new phone can take upward of 2TB. Again, my phone in terms of specs and OS. Is a lower mid tier android. Not garbage. Not the newest, but is better than the bargain basement stuff. Cloud storage for most users I encounter. Use cloud storage as a go between. Some uses as long term storage. Some do. However, he is my problem with that. You are familiar with the 3 2 1 Backup Rule right? How many of these users are backing up at all? Answer, not many. Many of them say to me, "James I have it backed up on the cloud." Hmm, so you kept them on a drive at home as well? "No." Do you even use multiple cloud storage services? "No." Are you keeping all your old phones and using them as storage devices? "No." So you in fact have no backup. Pcloud is an excellent option. That I recommend for them. Half of them will be dead before they use the 1TB. ALTURNATIVES TO PCLOUD I RECOMMEND: Carbonite Backup. Unlimited backup for a yearly fee. www.carbonite.com/ Wow $24 a month multiplied by 12 months is what? $288 a year. After two or three years. That is a new or upgraded desktop. That four years of OneDrive storage. Roughly the price of a single 2TB SSD drive. I recommend Pcloud to people because for a hundred years. Most of them will not use up all the space on it. If they are logical, some are not. They will only backup what is mission critical to them. Also they will use the excess space as a waystation of data. Also I am sure in time Pcloud will increase their max storage to 2TB. Who knows they might allow existing clients to pay an extra $50 or something. Since I will be dead in hundred years. Or frozen, any kids I have will get another 50 years worth of use out of it. So to all the users I know or whom are reading this. If we are talking cost effectiveness. Here is my recommendations based on cost effectiveness. As well as compliance with the 3 2 1 Rule: Data Security: Anything that you backup on the cloud. Encrypt the data. I would say even encrypt the backups of photos and video. Why, because of biometric security and other concerns. As for encryption, I personally recommend open source solutions because everybody can see the source code. Hence it is more likely that a bug can not be used as a zero-day exploit. VeraCrypt is my primary recommendation for this. Not the only option, but the most well rounded. How many hard drives and for what: As far as backups. You should at least have one in your machine. Two portable. Cloud Services: In general I would recommend en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SpiderOak. Most of us do not have pockets that deep. So shop around.

total noob question, but would really appreciate an answer: Does pCloud have the functionality like on OneDrive, whereby the cloud folder exists as a local copy on the computer drive as well as synced to the could and does this functionality exist on Windows and Linux clients? Tried to connect my OneDrive to linux and it only mounted as a network drive (did not feel like going tweeking it deeper. Would really prefer a product/service that already does what I want from the get go).

I am a client of pCloud and do not recommend their platform. I have recurring problems synchronizing, and they do not provide: 1. a Download / Upload queue screen 2. a Log file How is it possible that synchronizing software does not implement these features? You have no idea at any time what the software is doing! There is no way for you to debug anything because there is no queue or log file. Also: 3. every time I connect an external hard drive, it uploads the data again and again. 1 Terra byte of upload, every time I reconnect this drive.

I installed the free version of PCloud and did a bit of a test. Generally I was fairly happy with ever I uninstalled it because I just couldn’t see a way of turning off the annoying pop up screen I t threw at me every time I logged on (it always open at the “please buy encryption” tab of its application. Was this because I was using the free version? Can it be turned off?
