It’s so good to see you happy and getting to do again what you are so passionate about. I felt so bad for you when I watched your video on how the AT had ruined your life. I hated to see you settle for a life that doesn’t hold the same spark it used to. Go on your hike - enjoy every minute - challenge yourself - and when you’re done, who knows? Maybe move to the mountains, or not, but you only live once. I’m older now and wish I had lived my life with some gusto instead of the same old thing everyday- go to work, come home, go to work, come home etc. You’re so young - you have endless options, and you have the guts to do anything. I want the best for you and for you to love your life. Good luck on this hike - I’ll be watching - and hopefully you’ll have an epiphany out there on what to do afterwards. BTW, I can’t wait to see who your hiking partner is! 😊

Great explanation showing the permit registration process. This permit covers all the land managers the trail crosses and reduces the number of permits and fees required to enter those lands. The permit is not required, but it saves hikers time and money. Imagine doing individual permit processes for 3 states, 3 national monuments, 7 California State Parks, 24 National Forests, 48 Wilderness Areas, at least 1 native reservation, and multiple private land holders!

The Permit process does seem confusing but you have it sussed. There's no such thing as a permit system for any hiking here in Scotland. Thankfully.

Good luck on your PCT hike, guess you are transitioning into a career hiker, probably CDT next, maybe Colorado Trail, maybe Patagonia, maybe Camino de Santiago. Only 2159 miles across the moon so start planning Oxygen resupply.

I wonder why the PCT needs all of your private information (DOB, phone number, address, etc, etc, etc)? What do they do with this information? I'm not even sure why you need a permit to hike the PCT? Does the "PCT Police" throw you off the trail if you don't have a permit? You don't need a permit to hike the AT, although the GSMNPrequires a permit to go thru the "park" and the SNP in Virginia has a voluntary permit at the entrance to the SNP. PCT sure seems like a bureaucracy and you're not even dealing with the "government". Just curious...

😂I thought the same thing until I researched and applied myself. This is a highly sought after permit and is limited to 5000 people annually to minimize the impact on the highly sensitive environment in some of the areas it travels through. All the information used is so the process remains fair and you can only register once and for one permit. Any redundancies or attempts to gain or apply more than once will result in your application being cancelled for that calendar year.
@wingnut8511

@Mikehastohike Thank you, but I still have to ask, what can anyone do to you if you hike the PCT without a permit? I understand the attempt to limit the impact on the trail, but the PCT isn't a government entity and has no enforcement authority that I know of. Does a person really need a permit to hike the PCT? What about section hikers, day hikers, etc? Sorry, I'm just confused.
@Mikehastohike

@@wingnut8511 While most of the trail can be hiked without a permit such as the area I live and around me, there are big portions that travel through National Parks and National or State Forests/parks where normal fees may apply and or registration for camping. The PCT permit basically gives you consolidated access/admission to these areas for traveling in and camping in without having to register with each area. Enforcement is only in these areas through park rangers. Non compliance can result in large fines from issuing agency.
@memathews

@@MikehastohikeThanks for covering the PCT permit need, it saves so much time and possible costs. The agency I volunteer with still requires onsite wilderness permit registration from PCT hikers, but there's no cost and the permit is simply a trail-user tally (and a bit of a safety factor while hikers traverse 4 wilderness areas and a reservation during a 100-mile section).

The fact that u got the day may be a lot of hiker cancellation. Intimidated by last year extreme maybe once in 25-50 year conditions in the west coast. Typical water carry thru desert is 6L, but some hikers just carried a water cup. Streams, creeks everyday. However 2024 back to drought, watch Sanjac and his Sanjacinto snow reports. Also same time last year dozens of youtube vids declaring PCT thru hike. I only count 2 serious hikers so far.
