It should be acknowledged that Street Fighter was a mostly dormant franchise in the 2000s before SF4 brought it back in a big way during the 2010s. On the other hand, Megaman was alive in the 2000s but has become dormant ever since and even after Capcom brought the series back, it still feels like they mostly neglect it. At this point Megaman feels like a legacy/retro pick rather than a modern character, whereas Ryu fits both criteria.

For me, it comes down to this. There's other Megaman characters that you can replace Megaman with, like Zero or other Megamen. You can easily have one without the other. But for Street Fighter, you can't replace Ryu. any other SF character added would be in addition to Ryu already being there, I'd say. It'd be dumb to add Chun Li or Akuma instead of him. If you're talking about both franchises as a whole, then yes, I don't see either one leaving anytime soon.

The same thing can apply to the Microsoft characters we have in Smash. Banjo & Kazooie was the Microsoft character people heavily requested for Smash for the longest time, but in these reboot rosters Steve returns more because of how massive Minecraft is to where it makes more sense for Microsoft and Nintendo from those people’s perspectives, but Banjo & Kazooie coming back is also valid because of how heavily requested they were

I remember during early SSB4 speculation, Mega Man was the one third party character almost everyone agreed on. Then in 2011, a bunch of Mega Man games were cancelled, and Mega Man was left out of MvC3, causing many to call in to question if he “deserved” to be added anymore if his franchise was “dead”, leading to the debate over Mega Man vs Ryu. Of course, that debate is pretty laughable in hindsight considering that Mega Man was one of the first newcomers revealed for SSB4, and Ryu was added as DLC, disproving the whole “one character per company rule”.

I think it's the coward's way out to choose Ryu over Mega Man when rebuilding a roster. I may think about the reasons why it is, but I do have respect for people who keep both characters in. They both have such big, extensive legacies for Capcom that they are both deemed mascots of the company. Both deserve their spot, and I don’t think one deserves it over the other.

Honestly I personally doubt Nintendo would ever have a one character per company rule, they never really seem to want to limit themselves in anyway with these Smash rosters besides the video game characters rule, I could only really see this happening if it’s a 30 character roster or less but I doubt Nintendo would cut back that much on Ultimate’s roster

If i had to choose, Mega Man just seems like the more fitting character to me, and I don't even play him or his games. But hopefully, we get both and maybe more next time.

I think of all the third party characters, Sonic, Mega Man, PAC-Man, Ryu, and Bayonetta are definitely staying.

Potential topic idea: I would love to see Tinkaton in Smash, but my biggest concern with her inclusion is that she would play very similar to King Dedede as they both primarily fight by swinging around giant hammers. If you were to include Tinkaton, how would you go about differentiating her to make her feel unique OR do you think she could work as a semi-clone of Dedede minus his inhale and multiple jumps? Amusingly, I thought of including a move that references Tinkaton’s Pokédex entry where she swings her hammer to launch rocks into the sky (at Corviknight specifically), then realized how similar that could be to Dedede’s Gordo Throw.

I think there'd be plenty of room & avenues to have both Dedede and Tinkaton while keeping each unique from the other: +Dedede (as well as Kirby, Meta Knight and other low-tiers) are due for buffs, all three Kirby reps have grown & evolved so much across the Kirby series to give each clear direction for said buffs & retools, with Dedede maybe getting equalized & more of an all-rounder (as much as a heavy can get while still being balanced/fair) - re-adding Waddle Doo & a generic Dee to Neutral-B, giving Super Dedede Jump more flexibility going up or down, Air Bullet with recovery & float (which Kirby could also benefit from) as well as using more of Hammer's moves in general while Kirby's more the generalist +Tinkaton, however, could be a very different animal from most in the roster with a mix of slower, armored moves where the hammer hits paired with faster moves where *she* (Tinkaton) *is* the hitbox as she swings around the hammer; pair that with decent-to-good mobility (she DOES have above-average Speed, especially for a Steel-type), throw in a few coverage moves like Reflect or Light Screen for walls and/or platforms and you could have something very distinct among the Smash Roster at least, that's one way you could approach it (:

I don't think having a big hammer is all it takes for 2 characters to be too similar. just look at how many different swordfighters are in the game.

I know people are going "oh, Ryu's the popular guy & Mr. Crossover and Fighting Games" and so on, but I still think Mega Man should get the nod for a few reasons: +Ryu's in basically every Capcom crossover ever, and Street Fighter's basically been Capcom's favorite child since SF4 (even before SF5 got things in order) +SF6 isn't even on Switch and we don't know if a Switch 2 port's in the cards +Street Fighter barely had any new games debut/hit Nintendo hardware after SF2 on SNES (and most of the ports were for handhelds pre-Switch) +meanwhile, Mega Man has always been very close to Nintendo: MM1-7, MM&B-11, Rockman World I-V on GB, X1-X3, Legends 1 on 64, not to mention Zero 1-4, ZX, StarForce and most of Battle Network all being all Nintendo exclusives until the respective Legacy Collections - plus a ton of spinoffs & one-offs like Mega Man Soccer and RockBoard! +Rock (Mega Man) himself just fits in so well among the roster, though I will agree his animations, design & some moves really deserve some TLC in Smash 6 +and FWIW, Mega Man's debut trailer for Smash 4 was a MUCH-needed win for his series after a decade of neglect & unfair punishment from Capcom leadership (and that's just for Classic, and none of the other series have had a new entry since 2009/10 depending on how you look at X Dive) So yeah, if I had to pick one or the other for a Capcom, I will gladly Fight For Everlasting Peace with Mega Man every time because Mega Man & a ton of Capcom's other series in general *deserve* a comeback or two

I'd keep Mega Man, he's far more relevant to Nintendo's history than the Street Fighter series is. The Mega Man series was so important to the NES that he was a core character in Captain N

Honestly, I would be strange leave both of them out. Mega Man is the Capcom equivalent Mario/Sonic/Pac-man, being this cartoony mascot children will always turn to the most. Ryu is not only Capcom's flagship mascot, but the mascot for fighting games as a whole. So, much so to point that he is known by Thorgi's Arcade as, "Mr. Fighting Games". I say, agreeing with Thorgi's next Smash Bros roster, put both Ryu and Mega Man in, but leave Ken out as he is not as popular as these two characters.

I’m on team Ryu as I think he’s a much more mechanically interesting. Megaman’s got unique tools but Ryu’s got a template all other fighting game characters in Smash are built off of. If you cut Ryu you’re closing the door for other fighting game characters.

Not really. There’s no reason you can’t have Kazuya as the “fighting game rep”, especially when he makes the most sense for a Namco pic. For Capcom, there’s so many big/memorable franchises that any of them could work.

That makes literally no sense. That’s like saying if you cut Link that we would suddenly have to cut every other sword fighter on the roster just because he was the first.

How about Banjo vs Steve in this same regard
@IcyDiamond

Something rarely anyone notes is how when Steve came to Smash, a copyright for Mojang appeared under the start screen Maybe I’m looking too much into this but maybe negotiating with Microsoft for Banjo and the smaller Mojang for Steve were very different experiences and Nintendo would consider them different companies if they had the 1 per company rule in the next game Now personally I don’t think they would do this but if they had to choose who to keep, they’d definitely choose Steve, Banjo is popular within the Smash fanbase but Steve is just popular in general and comes from the highest selling game of all time

Strong as he is, Ryu can't really do shit. Oh you meant mascot status, not in a fight lol. But anyway yeah, it's MegaMan. Despite what a lot of the Megaman fanbase likes to say, it's Megaman. Someone mentioned it earlier, but the state the Mega Man series was in during the 2010s until MM11 was pretty much exactly where Street Fighter was during the 00s between SF3 and SF4. Just it's not as talked about as much outside fighting game circles, because to those outside fighting game circles, it wasn't a big deal. But the Megaman situation, ppl won't shut up about, for good reason, it was back to back misfires, but it's just odd seeing ppl hail Ryu as "face of capcom" when his own series was in the same predicament not long prior. Now some would say Megaman is back in another dark age, but I will say it's not so cut n dry. Covid happened very soon after MM11(which alsp affected SF6'S Dev, it was supposed to come out a good bit earlier than it did) and just last year the guy who was in charge of that game left Capcom. These are factors you can't ignore, the pandemic affected the world and after finally finding someone to take up the series, he dips after one entry. Despite all this, MM is still actively being kept in our minds amongst Capcom stuff. No big NEW game, but other endeavors are being done to keep activity in the IP while they sort shit out in the background. Another thing to keep in mind, due to the nature of the genre, Street Fighter is just easier to keep content going for. You release a game, have that be the main entry for 6-7 years, release updated versions/dlc with new characters, stages, costumes, patches, and hype up the competitive scene till next game is ready. That's how fighting games roll, but not single player platformers really. Sure there'll be bonus stuff but it's not a farm nickel and diming players like fgs are lol. Anyway, i say all this but both are 2 of my 3 favorite capcom franchises, none of it is out of hate for SF. Just annoyance from funny enough, doom and gloom Megaman fans that try to act like SF gets special treatment and is replacing MM or something when SFs own history was really rocky. Pun not intended

Ya know now that you think about it this now makes me think of who will this effect Snake and the Belmonts Also I am now starting to think Cloud and Sephiroth should be cut in favour of characters from the first 6 Final Fantasy Games like Terra Branford, Kefka Or Cecil Harvey due to debuing on the NES And Super Nintendo back in the day before FF7 Most games to Play Station Consoles

There’s no way, while Square is milking FF7 for all it’s worth, that they would allow other FF characters to replace Cloud/Sephiroth. They’re just nowhere near as iconic. I’d wager most casual gamers wouldn’t even be able to name them, if they even recognize them. I have more broader knowledge than them, and I don’t even know who Cecil is.
