So I'm guessing future games let you do this but by holding and pressing the a button for you to start a chain between phases with a trap card. I went back to try it out in this game cause I saw a few comments about this here and it turns it that I was spot on in the video still. I tried activating light force sword on their standby phase similar to trap dust shoot and the game just ignored by button hold and presses. I can activate when it's end phase but the game prompts that without me holding anything. the opponent however was able to activate light force sword on me in the standby phase though so this has to be a player bug? I may be missing something idk. EDIT - I FOUND THE BUTTON. ITS L!!!! you hold the L button lmao. So if your playing this game and want to use a card on their standby phase, hold down the l button. YES! I also loved the fact that it was the first game to go over the some events in the anime in it's own way with the first part being a mix of duelist kingdom and the second part being battle city. They even fitted the noah arc into it. Some games did before but it wasn't with the TCG rules which was always a bummer. I think the games become a huge step up after this one, especially the 5d's WCS games. They start to be games that give casual players the stepping stones on proper deck building and playing the game

@@weedhigh2564 I was talking about Mai's bust not any of the cards. 4kids shrunk her and later characters' breasts in their dub because they wanted to market to a younger audience, and in this game they didnt censor it for consistency. This is also a thing in the tagforce games, namely with Aki in the 5Ds ones. Also only reason you dont remember anything like this from yugioh in the card game is probably because it was also censored up until few years ago. They only continue to censor cards that already were for consistency, like most of the Harpie Ladies are all pretty much naked but were censored to look like they have body suits. Theres also Dark Magician Girl's big boobs which are consistently deminished.
@Aigis31

@@CatManThreeWell, that's the majority of the censors for sure, but cards DO still get "censored"- usually in such minor ways that it's shocking they did it and anyone even noticed. The Exosisters (or w/e the military girl archetype was called) has their colors changed to be less militaristic and more cartoony. Fairy Tail - Snow had her Colosseum changed to not be too similar to Disney's Snow White iirc. Cards as recent as the Tearlaments still get small outfit adjustments, lengthening skirts, shorts, adding more clothing to the stomach, etc. It's not nearly as crazy and noticeably different as in the 2000s, but it still happens, funny enough.
@CatManThree

@@Aigis31 Damn, only case I knew out of these was Exosisters. Exosisters were recolored most likely because anything containing references to imperial japan in media gets censored for Korea, and censorship shared between Korea and the TCG. It was at this moment that the owner decided to display astronomical levels of hating by calling my bluff. "Do you know what a duel is?" He asked me condescendingly. I did not. Long story short we left the game shop with a used Pokemon leafgreen cartridge lmao. That didn't stop me from getting into yugioh when I was older though Now I'm a grown man still playing Master Duel constantly raging against Tear-Ishizu and Spright lmao. Game was absolutely the start of an era of Yugioh games going from weird gimmicks or mediocre simulators into a period of really good games, between the DS games and Tag Force. Honestly a shame that the story campaign format has never been really reused by Konami since the end of that time period, even some of the SLIGHTLY newer games like Legacy of the Duelist became more or less just simulators. I think the slow start of the game might have been intended to give players a buffer of time and money to start building a good deck for later in the game but at the same time that could be solved by making it easier to get staple cards. Joey saying, "Hiya, UwU!" seemed like it would have been the funniest thing in the video but then you put the mental image of Kaiba breaking into random people's houses being like, "Are you the winner of the duel tournament? Damn, wrong guy."

Let me start off by saying this video was magnificent. You gave a thorough review, while being extremely entertaining and interesting to listen to. Stellar job/editing! And now to the nostalgia: I remember loving this game to pieces. I did get it on sale for like 16€ back then, so maybe you’re right. It wasn’t selling well. But the three cards inside were pretty sweet imo. And omg I’m so so glad I’m not the only one that thought of it having “Persona-like” mechanics in regard to the daily time management! One of my friends always gave me a lot of shit for saying that. Also, those visuals. The monsters look okay, but I swear I’m in love with the pre-rendered backgrounds. More games need to bring those back nowadays… Lastly: you actually finished the whole game honest!?!? Back then I probably wasn’t as good at Yugioh to begin with, but I was never able to get through the Big 5s in a row and the secret base with Noah. And I had cheated with the action replay to get every card in the game… I was playing stall with stuff like Bowanganian, nightmare wheel and such. But still, I just couldn’t get past it. I eventually cheated to auto-win those duels and played the last part normally. But seeing you going through it, and with my current level of knowledge about Yugioh, I almost want to give it another try. No cheats. Also, spicy tech I got from Master Duel (where I play older/wacky formats with my friends): the spell card “Acid Rain” clears Jinzo and your own Cyber Stein from the field! Because I lost so many games by leaving that liability with 700ATK around for half a turn lol Always looking forward to more of your content!

No other format that I know of has the "1 forbidden card per deck" card ruling. It also has the best versions of the god cards that are about as strong as the anime versions. My advice is if you're on emulator, just go ahead and cheat to have infinite kaibapoints to buy up all the cards you need to power through the early game to the good stuff.

I feel that. Its not far from it's predecessor in design but it has a card shop, is easy to farm points, faster animations, has better AI as the game progresses, weekly ban lists, and a decent RPG light feel, allowing you to construct up to 20 decks simultaneously. Down side is there's still a bit of grinding, that I mostly take out on Tea and it is missing some good cards. @@gameboylad

I’ve been playing this game a lot lately. Almost have 100% of the cards now. Finally got all the deck recipes recently but you need to duel Kaiba around 90 times to get his which is insane! Some of the cards I wish were not in this game, like Scapegoat. It just makes dueling anyone who has it tedious and I wish it was banned. You can’t even prevent it from activating with magic drain. The translation is abysmal too. “Congratulations on the clearness.” And “Atmosphere badness is embarrassed somehow, but Bakura’s been acting weird.” are all time classics of bad translations.

@@gameboylad “atmosphere badness is embarrassed somehow, but Bakura’s been acting weird” is a line from tea, during one of the nighttime events when all the duelists got new dialogue. I took it as a sign to duel Bakura and see if his dark side had taken over, but I dueled him and nothing even happened. Not only is the hint badly translated, it’s not even timed well! Why didn’t Ishizu tell us about Bakura instead, since beating her is what triggers the appearance of Yami Bakura, but nothing in the game indicates beating Ishizu 3 times is necessary to find Yami Bakura?

It's kind of surprising that you didn't mention this community fact, but there's a glitch in the NTSC version of the game that keeps you from completing all of the cards because of Pegasus not showing again after the Noah storyline (Dueling Pegasus aftergame is the only way to get Imperial Order). I found out about that glitch only after I completed the main game, so I was so relieved that I chose to play the PAL version without knowing about it 😅 so I was able to complete it 100% afterwards. I find it so funny how many of these cards appear in these games before the TCG due to being based on the OCG's card pool. Stuff like Temple of the Kings was banned before it was even released in the TCG so Mystical Beast of Serket was never legally playable. Crush Card Virus also not hitting until 2007 when this game released in 2004 is such a weird thing seeing as that card was STILL ridiculously broken for years in the TCG until it got banned.

My nostalgia will always be with the Duel Monsters era of Yu-Gi-Oh games, but you’re right, the “dogwater duelists” syndrome is hard to slog through. Out of curiosity, I picked up a Yu-Gi-Oh 5D’s game for PSP, and promptly got my shit rocked. There are ZERO Tristan- or Tea-tier duelists in those games; since any opponent can also become a potential tag-duel partner, everyone runs meta decks with clear win conditions. Thanks to later mechanics like Synchro Summons, the pace of play is faster and more intense. Better yet, there are no limitations on the card password system, so you can likely rebuild your real-life deck from that era for some next level role-playing. I hope your videos reach that era of games, because IMO they really are the promised land.

I loved this game as a kid and still loved it on a recent replay, the affinity system is great, it makes you feel like and important part of the world. I think the cardpool is great without making anything (besides wave motion cannon) feel overpowered. The summoning animations and sprites were really cool, it felt like the show where your monsters are actually in front of you battling, something that hasnt been captured in games since. I think unlocking packs made leveling up feel exciting, wondering what cards i could unlock and upgrade my deck with next. It's cool that certain characters decks level up with you and become more difficult as you go without becoming unfair. Idk what you mean with people giving up at mokuba, i had no problem with it even at the age of 5 or so

I'm actually a little sad I never found this in stores back when I was a kid. I definitely would've loved playing it! The grind at the start sounds rough, but honestly half the charm of playing these old Yu-Gi-Oh games to me was working your way up to a non trash deck at the start. I'd spend plenty of time just grinding out packs in Spirit Caller to see what I'd get from them. I'm also pretty glad Spirit Caller was probably my first actual Yu-Gi-Oh game I got as a kid because I would've been way more confused if I'd gotten the Wild West ass games where anything went like you mentioned earlier on. Spirit Caller was around the time I was actually learning how to play the game for real instead of just screwing around with family and friends for fun with my cards and acting like it was OG Duel Monsters so the puzzle feature they brought back from this game and the extensive tutorials absolutely helped me learn the ins and outs of Yu-Gi-Oh at the time! It actually blows my mind hearing there was just a long stretch of games without Last Will and a bunch of other classic cards I remember using back as a kid when I played. Kinda makes me realize there's probably a reason I ain't ever seen those games hanging out in any game shop in my area. I'm also excited to see the full extent of the Pokemon TCG video game as well, since I never actually owned the game myself. Most of my memories of that game are attached to an old friend I didn't keep in touch with as an adult. I remember when he'd let me play his copy after school when we were kids. So I never really got to finish it myself since he ended up having various problems later on in life and we drifted apart in high school and I think he actually moved away (this was also before I had a cell phone of my own). Still, I don't got any ill will towards the dude, we just kinda stopped being friends after a point when he changed. So a vid about that game'll probably hit me right in the nostalgia factor, considering he was my best friend for damn near 6 to 8 years and we'd shoot the shit for hours about Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh or whatever we felt like talking about. Hopefully the Pokemon TCG is as good as I remember it being from what little I got to play of the GBC game! I also gotta say if you ever get around to Spirit Caller, I'm also super excited for that vid! It shocks me how much of a blueprint this game is to that one. I won't say it's a perfect game, but it definitely improved a lot on this one from what I remember, even with what few gripes I had with it. The pacing of SC just felt like way more was going on in the first half and the grinding felt a bit less braindead, especially when they upgraded the random NPC duelists' decks. I will also say replaying it a couple years ago since I still got my copy, folding Chazz in round 2 of a tournament in like 3 or 4 turns cuz bro bricked his whole hand and I drew into every single combo in my Fairy deck was hilarious lmao. Anyway uh, I've probably rambled long enough lol. I don't comment a whole lot, but I figured if a newer channel like yours is gonna put in the effort to pump out extensive, quality content like this I might as well do my part to help with the KZitem algorithm too. I guess me having long winded ass comments could end up being a thing at this rate, haha.

@@gameboylad Honestly same, though long comments from me probably just come from the autism if I'm being real. I'm usually pretty comment shy, but whenever I do decide to comment on stuff I usually put a lot of effort in, probably cuz I also write as a hobby for fun, haha. And yeah! Spirit Caller was a lot of fun, even when I replayed it as an adult. It was one of my favorites of the Yu-Gi-Oh games growing up. I will say, it's a little funny seeing most of the Shadow Duels in Nightmare Troubador were easier than Spirit Caller minus Yami Bakura and Noah's Big 5. Maybe it was just the types of decks I used, but I DO remember the majority of the Shadow Duels in Spirit Caller actually feeling like a genuine threat most of the time.
