I think that’s awesome that Vin went and found out the actual meaning of this song after the first time they reviewed it. To Vin or Sori, if either of you are reading this: Eddie became the lead singer of Pearl Jam after writing the Momma-Son trilogy. This song Alive is the first song of the trilogy. The second is the song Once, which you guys reviewed when you did the Darwin week. Once was about the kid in this story growing up messed up from his relationship with his mom and committing a killing. The third song of the trilogy is called Footsteps. If you’re reading this, I think you should react to that so you can round off the trilogy. Plus I’m really curious about what you’d think of it. Also you guys mentioned wondering if this song was based on anything specific. This was sort of rooted in Eddie Vedder finding out the man who raised him wasn’t actually his real dad, and his real dad was a guy who he had met a couple of times and who had died. I think the idea of this was sort of born out of that.

I think you nailed it with your observation about where they could play. I’ve always believed that why they are my favorite band to see live is because no matter how large or small the venue, it always seems intimate, like you could be hanging out with them in a backyard cookout and they decided to play some songs. For me that is the magic of this band and why I still see them every chance I get- they never disappoint.

The song is the first piece in a trilogy of songs in what Vedder later described as a "mini-opera" entitled Mamasan,[4] which is composed of the songs "Alive", "Once", and "Footsteps".[4] "Alive" tells the story of a young man discovering that the man he thought was his father is actually his stepfather, while his mother's grief leads to an incestuous relationship with the son, who strongly resembles the biological father.[4] This leads to "Once" in which the man descends into madness and goes on a killing spree, and "Footsteps" in which the man is eventually looking back from a prison cell awaiting his execution.[4] "Alive" has been revealed by Vedder to be part autobiographical and part fiction.[4] When Vedder was a teenager, his mother revealed to him that the man he thought was his father was actually his stepfather, and that his biological father was dead.[4] The first and last verses detail those actual events, but the second verse is storytelling on Vedder's part. The lyrics of the second verse read, "Oh, she walks slowly, across a young man's room/She said I'm ready...for you/I can't remember anything to this very day/'Cept the look, the look.../Oh, you know where, now I can't see, I just stare...," and Vedder revealed that "she" was the mother, and "the look" referred to was not the look on her face, but "the look is between her legs. Where do you go with that? That's where you came from."[4] Rather than being the inspirational song most interpret it as, Vedder had quite a different meaning in mind, stating, "[He's] still dealing with love, [he's] still dealing with the death of [his] father. All [he] knows is 'I'm still alive'...that's totally out of burden."[4] Vedder stated at Pearl Jam's 2006 VH1 Storytellers appearance that over the years the meaning has changed for him. He said, "In the original story, a teenager is being made aware of a shocking truth that leaves him plenty confused...It was a curse-'I'm still alive.'" The audience's response to the song is what has brought about the change in meaning for Vedder. He added, "They lifted the curse. The audience changed the meaning for me."[9]

He wasn't a grown man at the time he's talking about...his mom really never told him about his real father being his father until after his father had passed away...he shortly thereafter left home at 15yrs old and was working as a security guard at night and trying to stay in school at the same time. He ended up just leaving school because it wasn't paying the bills and they weren't helpful with his situation. He said in an interview once that he'd fallen asleep in class once and the teacher told him he needed to come back to reality, he opened the front of his backpack where he kept his bills n stuff and said you want reality, this is MY reality!! He also didn't just look exactly like his father but was into being a musician which is what his real father was...

Which, FUN FACT, is the same song as Times of Trouble from Temple of the Dog - Stone Gossard wrote it (PJ guitar player), Chris Cornell took it and wrote Times of Trouble but it was also sent to Eddie as a demo to try him out as a singer when they were putting PJ together. So that’s a fun comparison, to see what Chris and Eddie do with the same music

YES, the "Ten" album is a ton of amazing songs, (and if my count is correct you have 4 songs left to check out off of it, "Oceans," "Garden," "Deep," & "Release." Heh.) As a poet, I struggle with whether or not I think Eddie Vedder is a good lyricist. The struggle stems from songs like this one, "Alive," where you really do have to look up the explanation to understand it, rather than get the message from the lyrics themselves. In poetry classes, we spend a decent amount of time breaking people of the habit and guiding them away from obfuscations and abstractions. Messaging is the key thing we look for and is best tested in a situation like these reactions, in workshops, if everyone is misinterpreting the piece then you've written then you're going to want to rework it so that the core messaging of the piece is clear to most readers. Even if you're treating poems as puzzles you want the reader to be able to solve the puzzle--A professor of mine makes a point t the beginning of his course, poetry, at its core, is playing with language. But, we also make the point that while poems can be used as lyrics and made for or into songs, there are differences between poetry and songwriting. So, although I think we have to critique songwriting through a different lens the core is still the same, is the message you're trying to communicate to the reader understood? I love this song, just like I love all the songs on the album. In short, when it comes to the topic of parent/child sexual & romantic relationships, the primary issue is similar to the issues with relationships like teacher/student or employer/employee relationships, an inherent power-dynamic problem. One side of that relationship is by definition a subordinate and is in a very vulnerable position. For example, what if the child decides they no longer want to be in that relationship, how does that dissolution of the sexual & romantic relationship affect the familial relationship? Is the parent holding the familial relationship hostage in order to continue the sexual relationship? Etc., etc.

I think this song is about "surviving" sexual trauma. "She said Im ready... for you", "cept the look", and "you know where" (as in, "You know where I want you to put it") are the sensory cues. "I cant remember anything" is common to trauma victims of any kind, but especially rape victims. Your body goes limp and/or your mind just shuts off because it can't process everything. "now I cant see, I just stare..." is a flashback. You become blind to the present circumstance as the past stimuli flood your brain and you "relive" the trauma.

Just to leave some commentary on the secular opposition to incest deal, my first inclination is that genuine consent can't exist between an older and younger family member. The same goes for any abusive dynamic between an adult and a child, since most children are trained from the beginning to obey adults, and this is even more so if that adult is part of their family. The difference between two unrelated people with a large age gap and two family members with a large age gap is that when they're unrelated, most people will have gotten to a point by that age when they can comprehensively choose whether or not to pursue a relationship with this stranger. With older family members, even as an adult, many people are inclined to feel an obligation to obey, even - sometimes especially - against their personal will. Children can very easily be manipulated into acting against their own good by their parents, even as adults. Probably more so if they have a history of other abusive treatment. This in general is why the two types of relationship are different. Besides that, the fact is that people who've been treated as such by older family almost invariably go on to suffer some sort of psychological side effect later in life aside from the relationship itself, and independent of the input of others (i.e. it's not just from being looked down on by others, these conditions seem to manifest even without judgments being passed by society) The exact neurological reasons for the development of this conditions may vary, but they always seem to appear. Contrast that to a romantic relationship where the only aspect that separates it from most "normal" (a relative term, of course) relationships is that there's an age gap. People in those circumstances can have completely healthy relationships with no negative effects stemming from the sheer existence of the relationship. Any relationship can go bad, but relationships with family members pretty much invariably produce negative side effects where simple age gap relationships are more or less equal to any other relationship in that regard. Add to that the issues of consent and manipulation, and I think there's a fairly good case against it even in the absence of religion.

No offense to Art, it’s his $75 to do with as he pleases, and I know from personal experience that you can never please everyone with your picks, but I’m not sure they need to do multiple versions of every song on Ten. I mean, I’m happy for him and I hope it made his day, but I hope that next month he picks a Pearl Jam song/album they haven’t done yet, because I believe there’s a lot of good stuff left unexplored. This song is part of a trilogy of songs that were chronicling a killer. Y'all should look into it and listen to the other two (Titled: "Once" and "Footsteps"). If I remember correctly this is the first of the three, and the other two are just as phenomenal and epic and amazing but when you dive in lyrically, the songs get darker and more disturbing and pulls you in to wanting more of the story that all three collectively tell.

The story behind this song ALIVE is Eddie Vedder met his biological father briefly as a child but he didn't realize it was his father as he was divorced from his mother and he was being raised by his step-father. His biological father nor his mother told him. He grew up believing his biological father was a friend of the family. By the time Eddie Vedder learned the truth about who his biological father was he had died of multiple sclerosis. So, this song is based on Eddie Vedder's real-life events. There is another song by Pearl Jam Eddie Vedder wrote about his father called RELEASE. It's a haunting song. Eddie Vedder said it's about when he learned who his father was but he had already died. I believe you will enjoy it. Release Studio Version: kzitem.info/news/bejne/yoaL3aivk5mdhH4 Release LIVE 1992 Version: kzitem.info/news/bejne/ymZsu4BjcXN-nGk Release LIVE 2016 Version: kzitem.info/news/bejne/049uxZOjrHh_qm0 The song BLACK is about Eddie Vedder's ex-wife, Beth Liebling. Divorced in 2000. "Vedder briefly discussed the divorce in a 2006 Rolling Stone interview, “We move on to another tough subject: the 2000 breakup of Vedder’s marriage to Beth Liebling, whom he had dated since he was a teenager. He won’t explain the split, but he does say that he was devastated." Listen to the Pearl Jam song, ONCE. It's about a serial killer. Listen to the Pearl Jam song, GARDEN. It's about death and war. To my knowledge all cultures that I have every heard of have taboo's against incest to reduce closely related people from producing offspring, this has evolved over time to help reduce birth defects, It's not just against the Christian religions. You've heard of people marrying from different villages, or small isolated communities getting together for celebrations which helps the youth from different locations to meet. Also arranged marriages of young girls to older men of different villages before they can become pregnant by local closely related boys. For countless generations incest has been a taboo in the human race, not just since 33AD.

You should see Eddie with Chris Cornell, they use to be roommates.

They were never roommates. Andrew Wood common singer for Mother Love Bone was Chris Cornell's roommate. Drew died in 1990 and Eddie Vedder came up from California to replace Wood but instead invited to join a new tribute project that Chris Cornell had just basically formed in honor of Andrew. So, After Temple of the Dogs run Ed joined a pre-Pearl Jam. (Some weird name slipping my mind but most were all like brothers out there and intertwined). Chris carried Ed out for his first PPJ show on his shoulders basically giving his Blessing for this new guy to take over for Drew. Chris Cornell was married in 90 prior to meeting Ed. Chris married the girl that managed some of the Bands out there. Maybe to ease the pain of Drew's death some. Then he found a kindred spirit in this new guy (he never deemed a replacement) from California named Eddie. He made an instant connection one another. They became best friends were neighbors for a short while but never roommates.

@@hmpz36911 Interesting because in the documentary PJ20 Chris discussed living with Stone after Andy died; but Stone said he'd rather stay living at home. Then Chris said he and Eddie lived together. The pre Pearl Jam name was the Mookie Blaylocks, Mookie took umbrage with the name so they changed it to Pearl Jam. I believe Pearl is one of their grandmothers.

I think a lot of people are turned off by the whole age gap thing but I'm not bothered by it. It's not for me to say who other people can love. I feel similarly about incest, assuming everyone involved is of legal age. It's gross, but me finding it disgusting is not a valid argument against it. I do plenty of things that would probably disgust other people too. Nobody should give a shit what other people think about their personal business. Historically speaking society has always been wrong - that's why we keep changing. Nobody has figured it out, so nobody has authority to tell you otherwise. Me included. #WebbWeek

There's a very easy answer for why a sexual relationship between a parent and their child (even if the child is an adult) is wrong from a secular standpoint. The parent has a clear power advantage over the child, and someone in a place of authority should never engage with someone sexually that they can exercise said authority over, because it leads to an extremely unfair and unbalanced power dynamic. Same reason you shouldn't have sex with your students if you're a teacher or your employees if you're a CEO. This power dynamic can come to affect the childs perception of sexuality, which can taint the way they view sex without that dynamic as well.

So, as im sure you know, sex between relatives of different genders can result in some bad genetic issues for the kids they may have, even life ending. Not the case with gay couples. No one is hurt as it is between 2 consenting adults that won't result in a child. It's pretty simple. If it's 2 consenting relatives using birth control and neither one is a minor, knock yourself out.
