So much to say here….. Porch is a fan favorite song, usually played at the end of a concert. The meaning is open to individual interpretation (as so many Eddie Vedder songs are). In the early days, during their concerts, this is the song where Eddie would start climbing, high, often into the rafters, and end up diving into the crowd. He says today it was the energy of the performance that drove him to do it. When they were inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in 2017, he apologized to his bandmates for having put them through that, because he easily could have fallen at any time. There are videos just of Eddie climbing during their concerts. If you want to see another GREAT performance of this song (imo, it’s even better and easier to understand), watch the MTV Unplugged version. It’s absolutely fantastic!

that's not smoke coming off the crowd, that's steam from their bodies!

I saw pj in Seattle in 97! The 90s were the shit! And I absolutely crowd surfed. So so fun

It was a rainy day with PJ playing before their biggest crowd to date. So they all went a little crazy. Soundgarden also played at the festival.

He wrote it on a porch, while waiting for his girl who was late. He spiraled into abstract negative scenarios while waiting, apparently.

Yeah, that was one legendary "rig" dive. But as another has mentioned, Porch the song is mostly a closing free-jam, the lyrics change a lot, and in Eddie's younger days he felt awkward during the jam portions of their songs because he didn't play an instrument. So he took that time to be crazy and do next level stunts. Now he plays guitar so he can also jam when he's not singing and he feels less awkward.

I was 11yrs old when Pearl Jam dropped their first album "Ten." I immediately fell in love with them. Ten was the first CD I bought and I still have it. This album saw me through all the ups and downs in life. I was lucky to finally see them live a few weeks ago. It was great, a once in a lifetime experience. Yet I feel regret that I never got to see them live when they were in their prime.

Look up videos of Ed climbing and diving. There's entire montages. They improv and jam in many of their songs. This particular show they were still relatively new. They owned the crowd. The legend began.

This song is not so much about what hes saying as what hes making you feel. Time to go crazy!

If you want to appreciate the song itself more, you can either try the album version or even the Unplugged version. This version is super chaotic and with the visuals, well...good luck. It's an amazing song.

The band hated that Ed always did that dangerous stuff in the early 90’s because they thought at some point he was going to kill himself. They said there was no talking to him, though.

After Pinkpop, Gossard told him they would fire him off the band if he didn't stop it. :D

@@Jspadoto That’s hilarious. How do you know that? Ed was evasive when Howard Stern asked him if the guys ever sat him down about it.
