Great video! Thank you! ...but why do you place pictures backwards to read? Another question. When building sentences do you use the words, for example, "I want.......'picture of item'" or a picture a sign language "I want.....'picture of item'"?

Is AAC devise better or pecs

Advice from a friendly SLP: PECs mainly focuses on requesting. A robust language AAC system (whether low or high tech) has opportunities for many more functions of language including commenting, protesting, informing, asking questions, telling stories, etc. Look into Project Core for modules discussing Core vocabulary :)

@@aacatwithavital While I see what you are saying, I have to disagree. I have seen so many kids in the school system with a huge electronic AAC device in front of them, and they have no idea what they are doing with it. PECS starts off with requesting because as a beginner using functional communication, what can be better than to exchange an icon and get something you want? There's motivation to engage in the behavior of using PECS now. PECS also focuses on VITAL prerequisite behaviors needed for using an AAC device later on, such as initiating (not always requiring someone to plop the AAC device in front and ask "what do you want?"), traveling (the listener of communication will not always be across the table from you), scanning and discrimination. It pains me to see these kids with AAC devices with a page full of 20 preferred snacks, the kid (looking completely away from the AAC device) presses the cookie icon, the teacher presents a cookie to where the student takes it and eats it. Then it's "Oh my, he requested for the cookie appropriately!". Not so. It's a page full of preferred items, he will take whatever item you present him. I've seen a kid request for cookie, but then given a chip to where he takes it and consumes it. PECS addresses the prerequisite behaviors needed to properly use an AAC device.

Why is from right to left? I thought that we have to put the pictures from left to right!
