Some of that shed was ready to come off, but there were parts that clearly were not, which the owner kept pulling on. It's a bit like when a bad sunburn on a human starts to peel, where if you pick at the shedding skin too much you can tear up living sections and cause damage. It's recommended beardies get weekly baths anyway, but a good soak in warm water does wonders for helping to remove dead skin. Personally, I don't mess with the shed process. I keep an eye on my beardies when they shed to make sure none gets stuck, but so far they've never really needed help from me. They have plenty of rough surfaces in their enclosures to buff against if needed.

I have to agree that some areas like towards the base of his neck, the dead skin wasn’t ready to come off. It probably needed about 2-3 days with soaking. Maybe more. I do think the only good spot is the nose just to make sure the lizard can breathe properly

Yes, you can see why you don't do this around 1:37
In my limited experience with helping reptiles shed, I've found that they tend to accept help more the sooner their eyes, nose and ears are tended to. A lot of the anxiety they probably feel when getting helped is due to their senses being compromised by the shed, so when it's removed, they can perceive their surroundings more clearly and without obstructions. Even if the reptile knows who you are and what is happening, their anxiety is on instinct to be extra cautious when their senses are even slightly imperfect. Good job on helping the Bearded Dragon, I am just mentioning my experience in case it can apply here.

I’m not sure why people are concerned. It’s perfectly normal for lizards to shed their skin. In fact, they tend to do this about 2-4 times a year.

@@knightofarkronia8652 I mean, technically speaking you shouldn't be taking it off yourself, because the animal may not be ready and you may hurt it, but I think this guy isn't harming the lizard. It looks well-hydrated and peels off easily so I think he's doing okay.

I don’t have a bearded dragon but I don’t need to have one to know that this isn’t how to remove shed. The skin on its head was clearly dead and was just barley hanging in and wouldn’t be a problem removing it. But the part on either side of the jaw was clearly not ready to come off yet. There was times where I couldn’t tell the difference between dead skin and healthy skin. The lizard knew because it would pull away when it was becoming painful. Just like with people who get a scab, it comes off when it wants and you shouldn’t pull it off

I really wounldnt recomend disturbing any reptile while shedding, you should just leave them alone if its not one that needs special care. the only time you should remove the shed is if its stucked and not coming out. and if you're gonna do that you should soak the animal in some lukewarm water first so it would come easier and painless. in this video it looks like he's pulling the fresh skin underneeth too, its painful for the animal please be careful 💜

it's one thing to help a shed if it's coming off in big flakes, but if lifting the shedding skin causes pulling on the fresh skin underneath, you should definitely not do this. it's evident throughout this vid that the beardie is experiencing discomfort, and in some parts it seems like the beardie is in pain. I hope I'm wrong and that everything is alright, but please be careful when caring for your dragon!! 💜

if you’re talking about when he pulls off the skin on the beard, that is always a tough shed no matter what. my bearded dragon almost always gets a stuck shed here. i’m not seeing signs of discomfort, only itching. also he is not having a black beard or anything. he is not pulling on any skin that isn’t ready to come off in the video. bearded dragon shedding is hard sometimes and it doesn’t hurt to aid him when it’s appropriate!

@funsize69

He should have bathed him, it's fine to pull on sheds, but only after a good soak, and only as long as it comes off easily
You only need to use tweezers around the eyes, the nostrils and under her beard. I use my thumb to rub off the dead skin from the lips and top of the head. Petting it from snout to back of head. “Shed ease” or shedding spray helps a lot. Alternative you can use coconut or vegetable oil to help remove dead skin. Especially those single stuck scales. Just don’t put it under a basking light after applying the vegetable/ coconut oil or it will start to cook the bearded dragon / beardie.
