Imagine if a scientist died in Brazil who did something to enhance the lives of the people of planet earth the outpouring of emotion that scientist would get or not,I don't understand why somebody who kicked a ball around a field would have people so emotional?

It's not so much that he kicked a ball around a field, but rather: He was a black man who was revered by most Brazilian irrespective of race. He was/is a symbol of equality who was born only 50 years after slavery was abolished. Football is additionally one activity where Brazilians are top of the world - Pelé had a central part in moving them from 0 world cups to 3 and now they have 5. Indeed football is a bit of an abstract activity, but, if one's going to take a Nietzscheian nihilistic view of football, then does any happy pastime have any value?
