Another thing to bear in mind, if looking to buy an ultrasonic cleaner is to avoid ones that have the buttons on a hinged lid. Over time, the wires running through the hinge get damaged and they stop working.

Hey Chris! Really love this review as I use an ultrasonic cleaner to clean my modern pens. If I may make a suggestion….when you take the section out of the water, take a bulb syringe with clean water and send a single flush through it. The ultrasonic cleaner removes the dried ink by bringing it back into solution with the water but some of it doesn’t find its way out due to the intricate design and tight spaces/channels within the feed. I find that one cycle, followed by one rinse with a bulb syringe pushes all the now liquified ink out of the section and feed and you end up with a pen that’s clean as a whistle, no removal of the nib and feed required. Hope this helps! Love your videos, sir!

I've been using ultrasonic cleaners for 40+ years. I retired as a Dental Technician and we would put gold crowns and bridges in them to clean off the polishing compounds. But I also use mine for jewelry too. So many uses. Tools, nuts and bolts, etc. One tip to give you so the ultrasonic vibrations don't dull or possibly scratch you items is to go to Dollar Tree and get that rubbery perforated type shelf liner and cut it to fit into the bottom of your ultrasonic tray. It really helps.😊

Not a very impressive performance, to have been in the tank for 3 mins and still be contaminated is a fail, and this system would be death to any hard rubber pen, put just the nib in and it would be safe, but then it would be easier to just clean the nib in the normal way, probably works OK on cheap chinese pen, but this excellent demonstration shows just how ineffective it is at getting at deep rooted contamination. Many thanks for posting this. Chris B.

Guess you won't be buying one. It works OK on feeds. Not all pens should be immersed in water. Thanks for watching.

@@chrisrap52 Well I already use one for cleaning black powder pistols, but I do sometimes wonder if it really is better than conventional cleaning, I think we are sometimes seduced by "modern" trends, most of which end up in the cupboard after a few attempts to make our cleaning chores less arduous , I am sure there are things they can clean well though, but I think we must accept that these home use things are not as efficient as commercial equipment. I will use an ultrasonic for some pens that don't come apart easily. Just another tool in the cleaning process.

Hi Chris, I enjoy your videos but this one didn’t make much sense to me. Wouldn’t it make more sense to take the nib and feed out straightaway, wash most of the ink out under the tap, and then put them in the ultrasonic cleaner for a final clean of any tough residue? That would be much faster and more efficient.

I wanted to see how well the ultrasonic worked when nib & feed in, some pens you can't remove the feed.

How serious is the risk of a device like this removing to gold plate of nibs and clips? People talk about it, but I wonder if it’s a serious concern or a once of thing that everybody talks about, like BSB and Lamy feeds

Anything is possible, but removing plating is not probable. If plating was not good before cleaning, it could be removed.

I am currently considering purchasing one of these as I have around 50 or so pens that require a thorough deep clean. The thought of having to do this manually doesn’t fill me with joy! Remember, be careful with vintage pens in ultrasonic baths. Some, such as Burnham U.K. models are made with casein which acts very unfavourably when coming into contact with water (it warps the barrel, cap etc.). Enjoyable and detailed video as always Chris, many thanks. 🖌👍✒️

I am mostly a manual pen cleaner. Like pulling nibs. I would never use ultrasonic on a vintage pen, might use for feed & nib. For me fountain pens are an immersive experience on many levels.

I have one to clean jewelry, and use Windex to get a nice polishing effect (old trick I learned from a Jeweler). I'm curious if this would be more effective at cleaning pens with a few drops of mild dish soap in the water

Chris: I just had a viewer comment that ultrasonic cleaners will remove gold plating from nibs. You're the engineering authority on all this stuff. Have you ever heard a claim like that before?
@chrisrap52
2 жыл бұрын
Someone commented on that. My response is anything is possible but not always probable. If the plating is OK, an ultrasonic will not remove gold plating. Most of the negative internet comments are not real. Maybe it was just a gold wash or paint that came off. I would not be concerned about it.

@@chrisrap52 In this case it was my Leonardo Momento Zero Blue Hawaii. I had removed the nib and feed and the underside of the gold-plated steel nib had the gold flaking off even before I put it in the ultrasonic.

I put an opus88 clear demo into our ultrasonic and it was very odd - it sort of warped/melted the threads at the end cap. The water was not hot.

Hello there! At the risk of sounding like a complete nerd, I have an explanation for what’s happened to you. This is actually not that unusual at all believe it or not. When using an ultrasonic cleaner, bubbles are created. As these bubbles cavitate and explode, heat is generated. This is why it’s important not to clean items for any longer than is absolutely necessary. There are also different levels of cleaning power offered by each individual ultrasonic cleaner. Depends on the power of the specific ultrasonic transducers used in the unit and the frequency at which they operate(most of the time this is on the 40-60 kHz range). So, as you can see, ultrasonic cleaning must be respected. It can actually be quite powerful!

Can't judge by sound. Per seller - "03" is the strongesr power and "01" is the weakest power..
