Regarding the Wallace fight, you could have nabbed the Toxic TM in Fiery Path, which puts Milotic on a timer. That means that Pelipper's moveset for Wallace could be Surf / Toxic / Rest / Shock Wave. For Steven you could consider the Rain Dance TM, though it requires a detour to the Abandoned Ship as well as a mon that learns Dive

Something to keep in mind with Water types in general is that Rain Dance can be extremely useful. Having a 50% boost to Water moves can really make a difference. For Phoebe and especially Steven, for instance, that move could have turned Dusclops into an OHKO and Metagross into a 2HKO. With that said, I'm glad to see you continue to improve at Emerald.

Water Sport is one of those moves no one batted an eye upon realizing it was gone. Reason: It's *100% overshadowed by Rain dance,* who activates rain habilities, powers up water moves by 50% and lasts longer with damp rock, alongside the fire weakening. The only thing Water Sport did was to fool X/Y players with Feenekin/Litleo into thinking the game would have an actual difficulty curve, because Viola's Surskit used it to weaken those embers, aka an actual strategy, which is more than what I can say about the other mayor trainers outside maybe Siebold using light screen + intimidate to prepare a setup sweep with Dragon dance Gyarados.

@@iantaakalla8180 Not really, I remember that the AI on him was literally random, which is a problem as a gym leader. Also you can buy Swords Dance, an TM kept for post game due to how busted it is on the adventure in gen 3 and 5, or nonexistent in gen 2, for dirty cheap after the first gym. If anything it's the moment you realize the game is easier than expected, and once you get the M-Lucario and the Kanto starter fully evolved the game gets genuinely boring.

Water sport to me has 2 uses. it can be handy in doubles in case your teammate is weak to fire and it can learnt by Surskitt which evolves in to Masquerain which is weak to fire, so its a bug that stand up to fire moves. I like the moveset options you got for this thing, fire water, electric, ice, solid special set. I hate facing this thing, in one battle it got off 3 protects in a row, the odds of that are massive and I hate it for it, but I love what you've done with it

On JRose11's last upload, I made a very interesting observation about confusion. It causes the gen 3 AI to make a lot of mistakes due to how their simulated damage roll works. Not only does it cause them to hit themselves in confusion as it does, but it *also* causes them to avoid using moves that they hit themselves in confusion on in their simulated roll (it rolls as 0 to them). This means it causes the AI to not use their best move 50% of the time while also causing them to hit themselves 50% of the time. In the case of Wattson's Magneton, this will prevent it from using Shockwave 50% of the time as well as fail 50% of its moves meaning confusion makes opposing trainers much less effective than it otherwise would.

One run I'm hoping for in the future is Castform. I actually did a solo Emerald run with it myself and you may be surprised to be told that it can be a total MONSTER. It has a bit of a slow start with only Tackle to start and having the Medium Fast growth rate, but once it gets its weather-based moves, it turns into an absolute demon. Admittedly, you're a bit limited because you obviously can't have all three of its weather-setting moves AND all three attacks it learns that go along with the weathers, but if you play it smartly and utilize it, making sure to manage its moves well, it's incredible. Then when it learns Weather Ball, it's over for most of the region. What I did was do enough training to have Weather Ball for Wattson and absolutely steamroll him, but I don't know if that's advisable when you're trying to go as quickly as possible; trying to get a Medium Fast Pokemon up to level 30 for Wattson may be a bit of a tall order time-wise, but if you do a run with Castform, we shall see. Pick up TM's like Ice Beam and Flamethrower for more move set flexibility during the league and it's a wrap. Probably its biggest weakness is having to use the first turn to set up a weather. That leaves it susceptible to annoying things like Sand Attack and other statuses, plus doing that, the transformation animations and the text saying "It's raining!" or whatever at the end of every turn can kill its time in the long run. Substitute is something I didn't try and could help mitigate that issue, but I'm not too sure, with that causing potential move set constraint. All that said, though, I was able to effortlessly sweep through the entire Elite Four with it by using the right moves at the right times, so maybe it can make up the lost time and still rank very highly. During my run with it, I came to realize there may have been legitimate reasoning behind its seemingly underwhelming stats. It also turns Steven inside-out, so I hope you do that run soon and have a blast with it.

My assumption for the weird functionality of the water/mud sport moves is that maybe they anticipated double battles being more popular, maybe they even wanted to implement more of them into the game, since they were introduced in this gen (I think?). So you could be in a double battle with say, a water sporter and a grass type, then the enemy fire type uses sunny day- you get free solar beams but now you need water sport to soften the flame throwers?

To answer your question about Water Sport, and another similar move, Mud Sport, no, it never saw any competitive use. In the main competitive format VGC, the only 'field' effects that would get set up were either from abilities, like Drought/Drizzle and terrains from the Surge abilities, or Trick Room, which is a very unique effect that destroys unprepared teams. Spikes/Stealth Rock and especially Mud/Water Sport do too little in a format where every turn is so valuable. Even in singles, they don't really see a use, even after the moves are good in gen 6 - 7, because players feel the turn is better spent doing something else.

Funny that you can re-teach it the three elemental punches yet because it also starts with: Bide, Meditate, Detect, and Confusion, you won't start with those. It also gets Hidden Power quite early at level 18. While High Jump Kick is a strong move, the only way to prevent it from missing is to use Mind Reader which it naturally learns at level 22. To deal with Psychic types, it would need HP Bug. Otherwise, it's attack stat is comparable to Hariyama however it is in the Medium Fast growthrate much like Pelliper. Biggest threat is actually the ghost type and maybe some flying types but otherwise, it's only going to struggle in a handful of places.

A fair way to split the difference between game time and real time would be to compare the game times with a linear combination of the real time and game time with weighted coefficients. The coefficients will be dependent on some meta analysis. Say you have c1T1 + c2T2 = (the average time) where c1 c2 are the weighted coefficients and T1 and T2 are the different game times. From statistics, (c1^2)+(c2^2) = 1. So, you can put in test values for c1 and c2 that satisfy the second condition and then check the average time you get and apply this to all pokemon with runs. Then see how they fill out a tier list and see if that "makes" sense with the play experience. If it doesnt, adjust the coefficients accordingly to get closer to the ideal coefficient values that give a single play time.

I think you played this run really well! However, I think your results were quite heavily impaired by one pre-game decision. You chose the modest nature, and I think a neutral nature would have been way better for you. It didn't bite you too hard early on, but I think your later game got really hindered by this. The clearest example of this is against Wallace. That Milotic really stalled you out pretty bad. As you'll know from your playthrough with it, Milotic has a massive SPDEF stat and a much worse DEF stat. Wing Attack or Aerial Ace hitting that DEF stat would likely be far more damage than Shock Wave was giving you. This might be enough for a clean 2HKO or 2HKO, especially considering your ATK stat is 10% higher. It also has Wing Attack also has 35PP, which means you're not getting stalled out as easily by it, or by Phoebe's two Dusclops. Applying this logic to other battles in the run meant that you would have had an easier run against a majority of the battles that you struggled with, and could play others more efficiently, such as dealing more damage to Slaking on its Truant off-turns. An alternative solution to your Milotic problem would have been the Magnet for your Shock Wave, which I believe is found in New Mauville. Other than this one thing, very well played, great run!

Hey Scott. In the real time ranking chart you put Pelliper in the tier for pokemon under 7:30 time but it got 6:58. Shouldn't it have been 1 tier higher in the sub-7 hour tier?

Hidden Power Grass is best for Pelipper and Swampert goes with Hidden Power Eletric.

Come on, Scott. Haven't you heard of Water Sport + Rain Dance Venomoth? The bane of all Fire types that rely on Grass coverage since it's a Water/Rock type with Sap Sipper? Thought this popular set would have been known, seeing as it's supposedly your favorite Pokemon!

That Never happened, nobody on planet earth have ever used water sport in any meaningful way and that’s not even Venomoth’s type nor it’s ability . Venomoth’s actually a Water/Dragon type with the ability Swift Swim. Venomoth’s most common set is Surf + Dragon Claw/Sleep Powder + Ice Beam + Rain Dance, with a modest nature and holding either leftovers or the petaya berry

I wonder if water spout was meant to support 2v2 matches where you send out a water type with water spout and a steel or grass type you can now defend there. I will also add mud sport on Linoone the ground - electric version was the only reason I beat Watson on my initial play through of Emerald.

But also, why did you keep Shockwave for Steven? You could've had a better chance with hidden power, and potentially a better time.
