I mean if you're going to waste all of that energy to make pellets why not jsut by a log burner instead of a pellet burner!!!!

Grass doesn't burn as hot as wood and it makes a lot of ash. You can make pellets out of almost any plant waste, but is it worth it? If you're in a cold climate and a pellet stove is your primary heat source, I'd suggest you test different brands and different woods. You'll find a big difference in heat and the amount of ash between brands. I've found as much as a 30% heat difference in heat output. Any wood pellet produces more heat than ag waste pellets.

I thought of this a while back. This is just about the perfect solution for carbon neutral home heating (and free). This is actually direct use of solar energy. The grass or weeds absorb the Sun's energy during the Summer; then its harvested and gives us this energy as heat in the Winter. All the CO2 given off by burning it is no more than was taken up during the Summer. One might even grow a small patch of tall plants for more biomass. Right now I'm experimenting with pressing briquettes with my arbor press.
@CrownOfTheTown

CO2 is the molecular combination of carbon and oxygen that is chemically bound by burning. The carbon is taken from the plant, and the oxygen is taken from the air. The amount of CO2 that is created has nothing to do with how much the CO2 the plant already contains. If I'm understanding correctly, by your logic, burning wood would be just as efficient as burning grass due to the fact that wood also soaks in CO2 from the atmosphere during summer. CO2 isn't released by burning. It is CREATED by burning.
@discountbrains
10 жыл бұрын
CrownOfTheTown Well, thank you for pointing that out. You're such a genius. No, grass DOES absorb CO2 from the atmosphere in photosynthesis. So do trees, but the CO2 might have been absorbed years ago.

discountbrains Yeah, I'm not trying to be rude, but I think perhaps you should read what I said one more time. No where did I say that grass doesn't absorb CO2. Of corse it absorbs CO2. My point is, The CO@ given off by burning is new CO2 being created by the burning process, and has little to do with the CO2 that the grass already contains.

CrownOfTheTown OK, so it replaces the original CO2, The original CO2 was broken down into C and O2. The plant releases the O2 into the atmosphere. This brings up a new question for me: Does the plant get all of its C from the atmosphere or does some of it come from the ground? Thus, does it release more CO2 in the atmosphere when burned than it had absorbed from CO2 in the air? But, then if this is so all the C it gets from the soil could have been tied to O2 and again it releases the O2 into the air or it just recombines it into other molecules.

I'd like to see the grass pellets actually burning in a stove as well. The FREE aspect of the pellets is nice once you've paid for a multi-thousand dollar mill.... I've shy'd away from the purchase because I'm not sure if these pellets will perform well enough in my stove. If the ash content is too high compared to premium hardwood pellets it might plug up my burn pot & outside vent. I also don't want to buy ANOTHER multi-thousand dollar unit (hammer mill) to process other items to pelletize. :(

Do you get a net positive energy from this process? You cutting grass using some form of energy (gas or electric) then you use a pellet mill run by electricity to make the pellets. Does this process consume more energy than the BTU value of the pellets?
@patrickd9551
2 жыл бұрын
A pelletmill at 7HP produces 80kg/hour. 7HP is 5KW. One hour is 5 KWh, depending on your country could be anywhere from 1 to 2 USD. 80kg of pellets can heat an average home for about 8-10 days in winter. Heating a home with natural gas can burn through more then 20m3 per day in winter. Again depending on your country that can be anything between 2 USD and 10 USD. The amount of energy contained within those 80kg is vastly higher then the 5KWh it cost to make. Using modern heatpumps can heat a home on 5 KWh, but the investments are huge and below 0 degrees celcius mostly useless. How about cost positive? Well based on electricity alone, it's clearcut. But we've got to factor in land and equipment investments. A pelletboiler can run you 10k+ and half an acre of land to produce biomass isn't cheap either. A heatpump will cost you 20k+ and you are depended on external electricity. So in the end I would judge cost positive too IF you have access to land and/or biomass. Other factors include external materials, shipped by dieseltruck or ship. But that's stretching it ;)
@darrellross410
2 жыл бұрын
@@patrickd9551 Thanks for the informed analysis. In the 2nd to last paragraph you mention additional costs but neglect to calculate the associated costs. These are not negligible. As a hay farmer I know the other large cost is the cutting and collection of the biomass. This is a large cost. This is why I have a sense of skepticism on whether this process is net positive (either energy or cost). If it were many people would scale this up as a business.
@patrickd9551
2 жыл бұрын
@@darrellross410 Well on a small scale it would certainly be cost positive in a way. Lets assume the previously mentioned 80kg of biomass and a crop that produces about 20 tons per hectare, so 2kg per m2 (this seems the average yield for dedicated biomass crops like elephant grass). So how long would you need to cut 40m2 and haul that material? Assuming I would cut more in one go i could easily reduce that number to less then an hour for cutting and transport using lesser tools. Another hour for loading into the machine and I will also factor in a hammermill at 10HP. So $20 for labour make a total of $24 (high side) to heat your house for 8 days (low end). Still a pretty much cost positive deal IF you have the time and space to do so. I'm talking on a singular home type deal, so only half an acre of biomass at best, mixed with other crops. Which you could harvest and process in a day or two. Homesteading type of deals, which for me seems a pretty good deal. So lets talk bigger scale, but still local. Market garden style farming. It's a labor intensive deal, but a lot of people seem to make it work. One hectare of biomass could provide pellets for 10+ homes. Most biomass is harvested during winter, so it could fit in with the market garden lifestyle. So my guess is also a cost positive deal here. But this type of farming is a way of life which I don't have an expert opinion about. Just wanted to mention it. But you are talking big farm level comparison. So tractors, heavy equipment, shakers and belts. Much much more to factor in. I was talking investments in both the home and the equipment to process pellets. If we are talking big farming we need to compare gross prices, because investments are of the scale. So lets take a popular crop, corn silage, which fetches $50/ton here. And comparable since you need to harvest and chop the crop. It also produces almost the same weight per ha. Pellets will fetch $100+ by the truckload and $250+ for end customers. So if everything being the same for harvesting, the only added equipment is the pellet machine. So here I would guess a cost positive deal here too, but then again, no expert here either just comparing numbers. I mention end customers specifically for smaller operations. Most farming crops like veggies need to go through wholesale dealers, resulting in lower prices overall. But pellets can be sold to the end customer fairly easy and they need a LOT. They'll buy 500m2+ worth in pellets in a singular purchase, but you'd be happy if you find a single customer that will purchase 100m2 worth of veggies spread over many deliveries. I'm sure I missed something ;)
@danrose3233

@@patrickd9551 Missing something...um, yes, equipment, fuel, labor, land, etc. You can't do an analysis an say a farmer already has all these things so all he needs to do is purchase a pellet mill.
@patrickd9551
2 жыл бұрын
@@danrose3233 I hardly say that just buying a pellet mill is the only thing. But you can't expect me to write down an entire business plan can you? All I said was, if corn silage at $50/ton is profitable enough for a farmer, then biomass pellets at $100/ton is certainly enough to cover for the additional machine. A corn farmer needs to buy machines, just like the biomass farmer. Same goes for land, fuel, labor. But sure, lets go over a few things I left out, just to keep my post "short" - Most biomass crops are low maintenance. Low fertilizer needs, no pesticides. Far less labor involved in watching grass grow. Less labor, less costs. - Most biomass crops are perennials, sow once reap years. Planting could be outsourced, since you won't need that machine every year. You also don't need a crop duster. You'd only need to harvest, transport, chop it up, pelletize and bag it. Less equipment, less cost. - The best biomass are C4 grasses and grow best on arid lands too. Land that's useless for other crops and guess what? That land is cheaper too.

A 10HP pelletmill will produce 80+kg/hour. So in order to produce 2000 kg (should be more then plenty to cover winter and then some more) would take 25 hours, or 3 work days. These machines just have hoppers like any other machine. Fill the hopper, watch bag fill, remove bag and fill the hopper some more. Bigger plants have more automation. giant hoppers, transport belts and many more lights and switches, but essentially it's all the same.

Palleting for burning purpose is counter productive. Palleting reduces surface area that comes in contact with oxygen, a gas which helps in efficient burnjng. In fact, fuels like coal are burned in boiler after they are pulverized to a powder stage. Palleting is opposite of pulverization. Fuels need pulverization and not palleting (for burning purpose). Fuels need compaction for transportation purpose.

I just want to find out whether you still have to dry the pellets after they are extruded from the machine? And what is the machine output (in Kg/h) and well as voltage requirement (in kW)? Would be really cool if i had one of these for my rabbit business.

I thought this said "pellets made from glass". And it reminded me of when I was a kid and shot out glass windows with my pellet gun.
