Footage from the Churnet Valley Steam Gala 2024 with impressive guest loco GWR 4079 Pendennis Castle struggling and working hard to climb the steep and curving Ipstones branch, coming to a stand at one point. In defence of the crew, this is an express passenger locomotive, which is not designed for such curvaceous and graded lines and the crew did an excellent job to get it moving again having stopped in the worst possible place. The locomotive did eventually reach the top in laboured fashion, and made an impressive sight in the process. I hope you enjoy the video!
The Churnet Valley Steam Gala 2024 also featured the home fleet US S160 steam locomotives, which I filmed tacking the gradient double headed. That video will be out on Sunday morning and is equally impressive, so subscribe to my channel for a notification of when that video is released. More steam videos are upcoming across the next month as well as some international videos after that.
For dramatic footage of double-headed US S160 locomotives tackling the same stretch of track, see this video here:

And finally, the BR Standard 4MT making light work of the same stretch:

I’d highly recommend a visit to the Churnet Valley railway, Staffordshire, it’s one of the few places you can see steam locomotives genuinely being worked hard.
