to be honest i had no idea this was made in 1984, it genuinely does have a timeless feeling where this can be made yesterday and it would still sound fresh

Yes they are cuattros.. This is a BBC 'whistle test' broadcast from about 1984. We shared the bill with Lou Reed, and recorded this video in the studio at Shepherds Bush. Musicians were Simon Jeffes, composer, leader main man and maestro, guitar 1 and 3, cuattro 2, guitar,Helen Liebermann, cello, (1 and 3) -look at the eye contact, they were a perfect musical match - Geoff Richardson (also Caravan) viola(1, uke 2, violla 3) , Steve Nye keyboard (harmonium - 1, ukelele 2), Marcus Beale (drum -1, violin 3), Gillian dancer, and some large paper herrings recently toured at the Vienna Musikverien. 👍

I was lucky enough to see the PCO at the Royal Festival Hall way back in the 80's - it was a magical experience I'll keep with me forever.

I had the amazing chance to see them twice in Paris during the 80's. Magical moments I can't forgot. Their music still accompany me today. I always go back to it time to time. Unparalleled and very intimate to me.

It sounds a LOT like Huasteca and Jarocho music from Mexico. That instrument I would bet is a jarana. If you like that sort of thing try "el cascabel" or "el querreque"...

There are also people inspired by them... Spiro isn't bad, it's wrong to say it resembles Penguin Cafe Orchestra, but they're more like what a folk group would be 20 years later in an alternative history where PCO was immensely more influential. And recently, I found this album by The Books, called "Music for a French Elevator", there's a track called "Classy Penguin". Listen to that and tell me it isn't a tribute :)

I have been a PCO fan since the early 80s and believe Jeffes to have been a true genius. The music is evocative and the images created transcend time and style. Thank you Simon and to all the musicians who played with in PCO - I salute you! Cheers! dbs
