Thanks for all the information nd help. My squidder is looking great, imho, and I lost earlier message as I was trying to add pics. Just watched and liked the ambassadeur drag replacement, for a 6000 here that I need to reopen as something didn't go right. Might need to order a new drag washer. Thanks for all your help!

Glad I could help. Make sure you get the schematic for your Abu before you order the drag(s). Depending on the version, it could have 1 or 3 washers that would need to be replaced. For example, the older 6000 has 1, the 6000 CA has 3. Go to ABUGARCIA.com and click on tools on the header line then go to the bottom of the page for the reel schematics and search on your model. You will be able to get the part numbers as well as the right configuration there. - Thanks again - Dennis

Dennis, great video. Question for you: Do you have any thoughts regarding improving potential surf casting performance of the 140 Squidder? For example using an after market spool and spacers etc. Thanks for the help.
@2ndChanceTackle
5 жыл бұрын
I think that Penn did the best they could with the light weight plastic spool, which is better than the metal ones when it came to surf casting. There are also the anodized aluminum spools that reduce the weight from the heavier metal ones and improve casting. I am not sure of other after market parts that could help.- Dennis

Hi Dennis, great video. Do you know if parts (washers etc.) for the Squidder 140 and 146 are interchangeable? I ordered parts off the 140L diagram and just realized there's a 146L version.

Yes - most of the internal parts are interchangeable. It is the frame that is where most of the differences are between models - Dennis

Yes - the Squidder would be the classic surfcasting vintage Penn. You could also look at the Penn Graphite (GS) series and the modern ones would be the Squal 15 and the Fathom star drag reels - Dennis

@@2ndChanceTackle still undecided if I want to get a different conventional surf casting setup, the other day I was using my 500 Jigmaster which was wound with 3 different colors of fabric line which I was using for trolling on an 8FT Tony Maja trolling rod ,,,and I was getting birds nests all the time, I've read some fisherman have success casting this reel but it seems to depend on the type of spool on the reel and the type of line and rod length, what are you thoughts on this? If I should give up on this type of reel and purchase another one that's used but restored and go with a 10FT rod I may give that a go.,thoughts, Thanks ,your videos are outstanding

What’s the odds of getting ceramic bearings for my squidder ? And where are the machined aluminum frames I used to see?
@2ndChanceTackle
5 жыл бұрын
I don't think there are ceramic bearing available for this reel. It has an odd cup and side plate install. I checked one site, Boca Bearings, and did not see them. You may want to check others. I think the reel is too old to have these designed and developed for today's use. The frame upgrades probably have passed with time. Again, there is not a critical mass of folks looking for them at this point. You may be able to find them used through an online site. I did see an accurate frame for the squidded on EBAY that is selling for over $100 at this point. - Thanks for asking - Dennis

hi ,great videos!!! thanks for making them! is there different pinion gears in squidders over the years? I rebuit a few and some com e out perfect and very smooth. some times I get a rubbing feeling . idk if I'm missing something . I have a pinion gear that came out of a squidder and doesn't jive with others . and I thin the berrings on the handle side and different over the years. not the berring it self the I guess cap that goes over the berring. I'm sorry is I confuse you. I confuse myself some times. lol I guess I'm asking is there changes over the years> ? .....thank you!
@2ndChanceTackle

The pinion sleeve, main gear and spool gear have remained the same. The problem is generally that there is a variance in the machined parts and they do not always mesh as smoothly as the set that was installed new. If you are getting rub from the gear sleeve, it may be that the piece is not sitting properly on the shaft. Make sure the shaft is cleaned and lubed before installing a replacement shaft sleeve. On the bearings, no change. My guess it is in the quality of the bearing itself and again, there are variances in the machined parts and it could cause a difference in performance. Thanks for asking - Dennis

Hi Dennis,As you've mentioned in some of your videos, I also want to go back to familiar or memorable times, and have purchased myself an eBay 140 squidder. Watched your rebuild video many times and feel was able to put things back together as described. The drag washers are completely toast and I will need to order some. Saw some called carbonex or something like that which seem pricier, have not gone to penn.com to see what they want for the ones you recommend. Any thoughts on this carbonex product? And finally to my main question, the dog & spring (amazing engineering tiny hole for tinier spring which I luckily didn't lose) I believe are correctly positioned, but the handle will not rotate backwards in any position. Don't think it's a feature I ever used on the reel back in the day, but it's not working properly. Any thoughts as what might be happening there? Lastly, I live inland now and will likely spool the reel with 25 lb mono and use it for catfishing. So I wish I had the bars and the dark spool for a 146, so you know who may have some inexpensive ones? Thanks for your attention and sharing, Mario

Thanks for viewing the video Mario. I will try to answer as best I can. I think Carbonex are fine, but the replacement drag washers from Pennparts.com are also an upgrade from the original ones that are now toast. I believe the Penn replacements are all you will need for catfishiing. This is a low gear ratio reel that is well built. Cost from Penn is probably $1.50 per washer. I would get both the metal and fabric washers for a complete rebuild. That will probably cost about $15 total, with the shipping. On back-peddling the handle. I will assume you are using the anti-reverse switch on the side of the reel to release the dog. If the toggle works and you still cannot cannot reverse the handle, then I would recheck the internal dog setup. Take the reel apart again and make sure the anti-reverse lever is rotating the cam that moves the dog up and down. If that works OK, then reset the dog and try again. It may be that the spring did not reseat properly. Sometimes it is just a case of trial and error.That spring does sit on a small post. On the replacement posts and spool, I think they could also be available through Pennparts.com as well, but you pay their price. Check Ebay or other online sites for either the parts or a broken reel that you could use as a doner reel. The 146 is pretty rare and usually pricy either way. Personally, I wouldn't do the upgrade. I have not seen these reels come in with frame twist problems. If you are worried about that, then the JigMaster is probably a better fit for the big catfish. It has the higher gear ratio and the solid crossbars. I hope this helps. Please ask more if you need clarification or didn't get the answer you were looking for. - Dennis

Thanks for the prompt reply and information Dennis. photos.app.goo.gl/0bGzpS6RWw1QH8QQ2 I am including a link to a picture of the side plate put together. Not sure if you can see the tiny post that corresponds to the dog disengaging mechanism in the picture. Seems to me that it should be the one engaging the dog, but it appears to be near the rim of the reel and in contact with nothing. Could that be the problem? That somehow that is in the wrong spot?? I will order the drags shortly along with some of the lube, opting for the blue Cal and some x oil. Also the Penn little tool so that I won't take the pliers to the handle hold down nut again. Thanks again, Mario

Hi Dennis do you know how to fix the bearing knob to adjust the spool??i have the same reel
@2ndChanceTackle
6 жыл бұрын
The bearing cap on the non gear side is turned clockwise to increase the tension on the spool and to take up slack. It is turned counterclockwise if the spool is too tight. You may need a pliers to grab and turn the button if it is not moving. If it is stuck, remover the cap (counterclockwise) and re oil the bearing. - Dennis

Hi, my spool seems to be stuck on the gear plate, it does rotate but does not come off, any advice?
@2ndChanceTackle
6 жыл бұрын
Can I assume that you are just getting started and that the problem you are describing is why you need service? If so, I am pretty shore that I know the cause. If you have removed the side plate and the spool came out with the side plate, the most common problem is that the spool gear is frozen to the spool shaft. In order to repair this, you need to remove all parts from the side plate. That includes the handle and star drag, the 4 bridge screws and the free spool lever and release cam. You can also remove the spool bearing as well. . Once you take these screws and attach points off, gently push the bridge assembly and free spool cam through the back of the side plate. All of the gearing and parts should come out at that point, including the spool with the spool gear on it. If you want to try and repair the spool/gear, soak the two with a penetrating oil and let sit awhile, maybe overnight. Once complete, try to us a pliers with a grip that will not harm the teeth on the gear. Rock the gear side to side to work it off. You will not be able to turn the gear 360 degrees because there is a channel that is cut in the gear for the spool offset, that is why you need to go side to side. If rocking does not work, try heating the gear and spool with a propane torch. You do not need high hear, or prolonged heat, Do not heat the spool as it may warp. Try rocking the gear back and forth again. If successful, you can steel wool the spool shaft, lube it and reinstall the gear side plate and free spool cam. If not successful, you will need to replace both the spool and spool gear. I hope this helps. Send another note once you try these steps and let me know how it went. Thank you fr asking - Dennis

2nd Chance Tackle thanks for the details information, it worked like a charm, looks like all the parts are sound other than some corrosion, any drag washers you would recommend?
@2ndChanceTackle
6 жыл бұрын
Yes. This is almost always a case where the spool gear is stuck to the spool shaft. You probably cannot engage the free spool lever to let the spool turn independent of the handle as well with he problem you describe. This happens when the reel sits for a long time and either salt water or dried grease cause the gear to rust on t the spool shaft. In order to get access to this and repair it, you need to remove the drive side handle, star drag assembly and bridge screws, as shown on the rebuild video and you must also remove the free spool release lever and cam. Take the screen off the lever and push that mechanism through the side plate at the same time you are pushing the main gear assembly out. You need to do it together or you will bend some of the parts. Once you have this out, use a penetrating oil on the spool gear and rock the gear back and forth to try and free it from the spool. It needs to be pried up. It cannot be rotated to free it as there is an inset where the spool meets the gear that will prevent a 360 rotation. If the penetrating oil does not free it, you can try heating it with a torch. Don't do it too long. See my video on Surefire fix for a frozen pinion gear, if you want to see the technique. Use a cushion if you are grabbing the gear with a pliers. You don't want to ruin the gear teeth. If that frees the gear, clean both surfaces and reinstall. You will need to reset the free spool cam and spring before following the reel rebuild instructions to completion. Let me know how you make out and I can post a video on how to reset the free spool cam and spring if you need help with that - Dennis
