Penn State struggled with an Illinois team in the first half that seemed to fore-shadow the ineptability in weeks ahead to close out the regular season. On offense, it looked like the Lions had lost that explosiveness it had early in the year, and really had a hard time putting the ball into the end zone. The run game was next to nonexistent but Kevin Thompson hit just enough passes to stay with Illinois for a 7-7 halftime game. After half, Rashard Casey provided the spark the Lions needed, with a touchdown throw of his own, and a ridiculous long scramble for a touchdown which put the game out of reach for the Illini. Add a couple field goals from Travis Forney and you get a very unimpressive 27-7 win over a Big Ten opponent who exposed a lot of Penn State's liabilities.
Penn State's Top Performers:
Courtney Brown: 4 sacks
Lavar Arrington: 5 tackels, 3 TFLs, 2 PBUs
Rashard Casey: 3 of 7 passing, 49 yards, TD ... 7 carries, 74 yards, TD
Penn State trudges along as an undefeated team, accruing it's 9th victory of the season. Illinois had a record of 4-4 after this game, but would win out in 1999 and finish with an 8-4 record, which got them to the Micron PC Bowl, where they enjoyed a trouncing of Virginia.
