Education programs in our country advertise that they teach critical thinking, but most often, these skills are mixed in with general course information. “A lot of people think that they’re great critical thinkers because they equate critical thinking with a degree,” says Darcy. “You can have a Ph.D. and be crap at critical thinking.” So, she designed her own specific class.
In a storm of polarized public opinion, biased media, memes, and outright fake news, Darcy felt an urgent need to learn about how our thoughts are shaped by outside forces without us even knowing. Darcy admits, “I didn’t know that when I was having conversations, people were using generalizations and logical fallacies to trick me into believing what they were saying.” Now she understands her biases and teaches people to see important issues through diverse lenses.
Darcy draws upon her career in military communication and logistics, leadership, and education to deliver her message from the TEDx stage in her talk “Penny for Your Critical Thoughts?” She hopes she inspires people to hone their critical thinking skills in order to navigate a sea of bias.
“When you have people drowning in bad information, you have to give them the tools to swim, to get to the surface, and see that there are whole other ways to look at the world.” Educator, Writer This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
