I like the fact that with every entry on the "regret" list, you provide a good alternative. That is very classy on your part. This isn't just a negative list. It lends credibility to the pens you say you do like. A good reviewer can't be positive all the time.

I've never had an issue with a Montblanc ink and I probably own 10-15 bottles -- I will say I haven't been a fan of their "permanent inks", not because they've caused any damage to my pens, but simply because the flow is a little dry for my taste. I've also been extremely impressed with the Sailor Jentle inks.

I've never used Montblanc, but I have quite a few Noodler's inks, most of which are quite good. Heart of Darkness is the best black permanent ink I have ever used; it is quite excellent in every pen, and impossible to remove once it sets. I use it to write checks or whenever I want something to last essentially forever.

Very deftly done, David. I've heard many people voice the same difficulty regarding the Zebra. I must have the magic one that works. It's a great little pen, not nearly as good as a Preppy or a Pilot Varsity or even my lovable little Pilot Petit 1 pens. But it writes every time, and it writes well. I have a suspicion it's in the storage. I haven't used my Zebra in at least a month -- thanks to this video I just picked it up, and it goes right to town. I store it horizontally, and I think that keeps the feed inked. I don't know, but I suspect storing vertically probably allows the feed to dry out somewhat. I do love that sub $10 pen world! Thanks!!

Thanks for this video, a great watch for sure! I've recently (well, as of the past 2 years now) got back into the hobby of journaling, mostly using fountain pens and rollerballs. My all-time favorite is the Rotring 600 brass body fountain pen. I bought it in the early 2000s, when they were still made in Germany (I believe the new ones are made in Japan.) It's a thick, heavy pen, and a lot of people are surprised at the weight when I've handed it to them to try out. It has the classic Rotring hexagonal design, the knurled grip section of the 600 series, and of course the distinctive red ring on the cap.

This channel inspired me to research fountain pens. My favorite ball point pen is the Zebra F-301, so I decided to give their fountain pen (V-301) a chance. I understand it is not the greatest representative of the style, but I have been using it for about a week with no issues. I compared the materials in my pen to your example and I believe they have been improved in the time between this video and now. The nib, the cap, and the feed seem to have improved. Again, not saying it is great, and I am sure I will purchase better, but it has served me well and I don't regret the $4. Thank you for the content and the gateway to another obsession.

Sometimes I regret buying pens because I don't get around to using them. It is sort of like the many ties or shirts a guy owns but seldom wears. Probably many collectors feel the same. I'll also +1 the Preppy and add a bit more... The tips can be replaced and swapped! Whether that is the fountain pen nib, marker tip, brush tip, or chisel/highlighter tip, you can buy spares and swap as needed. The Preppy will also fit the Platinum converter, if desired. And you can swap those tips and converter into and out of the Platinum Prefounte, which is the slightly more expensive and slightly better looking big sibling. Both pens have the same internals and slip -n- seal tech in the caps. With a metal clip, fewer markings, and faceted barrel, the Prefounte just looks a bit nicer. At about 10USD I can afford to lose or give them away from time to time.

I have always loved fountain pens since receiving my first blue and gold tone Shaeffer when I was twelve. Now, as a grandmother and high school Science teacher, I have started to collect them. My budget is small so I started with some inexpensive ones first. I have the Jinhao Blue Marble 750 which has a lovely weight and writes beautifully! So far I have only Noodler's inks. I also have the Jinhao 250 in brushed chrome with gold tone accents. It has a fine nib and also writes very well. I also own a Cross black matte with gold that only uses cartridges, but I am purchasing a converter to use bottled ink. I think I would enjoy that immensely, as well. But the M800/805, well, I always have at least one inked. Today, four are inked up! The pen I regret most purchasing is (believe it or not) my Visconti Divina in blue with a DreamTouch Palladium nib. I had not used the DreamTouch, only gold (which I love). I wish I had found a black Divina with a gold nib on it on ebay or someplace. For the money, I should love it. But I honestly do not, and it usually sits in the pen case. I own an Ondoro myself, the orange one. I loved the industrial/postmodern look of it. I tried putting it off several times but ended up buying it. Now that I've been using it, I have to agree with you: it IS overpriced for the materials it uses and the design isn't too groundbreaking either to warrant such a price. I should've spent a bit more on the Oak Ondoro, that would've made it a more unique buy. This was a great review with many fair points.

To be fair, Faber Castell does not offer any compromised quality pens. Some pens that sell in that price range that have a bigger nib size are far cheaper here, yet the Jowo size #5 nib is without a doubt more reliable than those options. I rather spend it wisely. By the way, Faber Castell Emotion & Ondoro are 50% more premium than those pens this year compared to last year when they were 50% cheaper. The pen market clearly responds to customer satisfaction, albeit in a markup manner. I hope customer satisfaction takes the priority out of this.

Interesting and informative. I'm not /seeking/ negative reviews, but I appreciate the viewpoints and honesty -- and your lead-in disclaimer was perfect. My perfect pen depends upon the specific service I want which adds another twist as to why one pen works for some but not all folks and not for every task. My "best" pen is probably the Pilot Custom 74 in the "Brian Goulet" Blue. Superb writer, comfortable and attractive, but I tend to baby it. My daily carry would probably be my Karas Kustom Fountain K in all Copper. I like the heft, find the copper's patina to be attractive, unique and constantly changing, and, with the right nib, it too is an excellent writer. My preference for it is primarily it's ruggedness. Other pens have their pros and cons. I only have one I regret buying and never use. I'm lucky in that regard! Thanks for your very good review. I've just subscribed and will seek out your other vids.

I have to agree with your opinion of the zebra fpen. My first Fountain pen pen was a Parker's Vector. I really liked the pen for writing but in my opinion was a little too "wet" for drawing. I found the zebra pen at a local store and bought it to see how it work. Out of the package it work wonderfully; not dry, not wet. I made a great sketch with it. I capt the pen to work on another comissioned drawing the next day and that was a big mistake. Then stopped working and I did what I usually do; squeeze the cartridge a little to help with the flow, it started working but then it started to skip. It was so bad that it kept me away from fountain pens for a while.

You'll be happy to know Faber-Castell fixed 3.5 of those issues you mentioned when they discontinued the Basic and replaced it with the Essentio. This is unethical and simply wrong, something we should boycott as a community. To me as an artist this kind of theft is a big deal.

I just threw an Airmail Pen in the recycle bin. It was included free with a (fantastic) pen shipped from India. What a waste of time and ink. I won’t even give it away.

The Ferris Wheel Press Carousel pens make that same popping noise, when uncapped. I kind of enjoy it but I laughed when you said you'd never take that pen to a business meeting. That would actually make a hysterical video.

Great tip on the Preppy's and Preppy markers! I'm looking at the Jinhao 450 for a cheaper pen that if I left behind I wouldn't freak out. I'm also considering the Conklin Duragraph for my main pen. Great review, thank you!

Although both Lamy and Jinhao 599 have triangular grip the Lamy feed can be inserted into the section only one way. Thus it is not possible to orient the nib to suit your writing. Jinhao 599's feed can be rotated relative to the section and can suit your holding style. In this sense Jinhao 599 is an improvement over Lamy. This is not to justify it being a rip-off of Lamy design.

I like chrome pens, they are indeed fingerprint magnets. Being a fan of old Sheaffers, one pen I have a love/hate relationship is the Intrigue, specially the 611 model (gunmetal and chrome trim). Now, I would never regret buying any pen with a nib as smooth as the Intrigue's, but they definitiley quirquy and polarazing pens. The v 301 is a missed opportunity. Thank you for making this video, it was very informative and entertaining.

@13:40 agree 100% with you, Sir. It’s a disgrace when a company adopts such improper practices. And for me, that is absolutely sufficient to completely disregard Jinhao as a company from that point onwards.

I'm familiar with that Zebra fountain pen. Bought one, it lasted literally one week. An absolute wretched piece of junk! Everything that can go wrong with a fountain pen, did go wrong with it. I thought it would be a good inexpensive pen. Have used, and am completely happy with Zebra's F-701 and 301 ballpoint models. But the company clearly has no clue how to make even a basic fountain pen.

A Pen that i love more than i should is my TWSBI Vac 700. I wanted one for years and eventually ended up getting it as a gift from my sister. One that i regret buying is the Conclin Duragraph. I bought it with a Omniflex Nib that just never worked the way it was supposed to. When i got it it was dry as heck, skipping during writing even with no line variation what so ever, i then took it apart and cleaned it, which did improve the ink flow, but it still kinda sucks... It keeps skipping the first centimeter of almost every down stroke no matter who uses it. The Duragraph also has some (to me) strange material choices. Resin Barrel with metal treads on the grip but plastic on the barrel, better than the other way around but still something that's going to wear out over time. And also maybe my Elington Pen. Not sure about that one, since it is overpriced in my opinion but not a bad pen in and of itself.

spent a huge amount on pens refining my taste and it turns out I like Pilot78g’s w EF nibs: they are consistently reliable, I like the con40 converter as I like to swap out my inks frequently, I love the original colours esp. the green and the black but I have one each of the red, the blue and the demonstrator but best of all I like the blue/grey and the olive from their Italian collection w silver trim: occasionally it’s nice to write with a Platinum 3776 EF(Chartres bleu w rhodium trim) or my lovely Sailor Pro Gear H-EF with GvFC cobalt blue but mostly I prefer my entry level Pilots!:)

Thanks for this. I have a FC ondaro roller ball that I love and was looking t buying it’s FP partner online. I think I will wait until I can see feel and write with it before I make the decision. The metal cap does not stay on my roller ball well in my bag so that might be why the change of material. Thank you for the heads up, I will do more investigation. Note on black pen from FC. I had one but lost it when I was in a fashion house that loves cool black carpet. Now I only take bright colour pens there like my golds or reds.

I would recommend you start with the an AEROMETRIC, early to mid 50's. They are very reliable, and you can most probably pick one up for 50-100 USD, in original condition and fully working. These had the "plexiglass" sac which seem to last forever. They came in a range of colours and cap trim to suite all tastes. Tough as nails, and you can use them daily. The nibs are usually medium and hard (no flex), although I find they work marvelously - smooth and no flow issues. The earlier Vacumatics use latex sacs, and may require restoration to get the sac replaced (not such an easy job) Oh, and one last thing, they usually ALWAYS write, even if it has been stored for weeks or months

JF I own well over a hundred pens, some cheap, some reasonably expensive. Over the years two of them have made it to the very top and remained there unparalleled: a Pelikan 805 nicknamed Black Beauty and a traditional striped green Pelikan 800. Not saying they are better pens, just saying they are perfect to me and I use them every day with the same distinct pleasure. Pens I regret buying? The ones made in China, for sure. Among others of the cheap variety, but they stand out, no doubt.

I have to admit, while the Jinhao 599 is _very_ similar to the Lamy Safari, I do enjoy them. The Hero 359, on the other hand, is even closer to Lamy's classic design. It's almost a carbon copy, right down to the nib design. _That_ pen crosses the line for sure. Anyway, great video! Liked and subscribed!

everything you didn't like about the faber-castell basic is exactly what i like, except for the pop, i own 5 basics and none of them do the pop when i remove the cap, the basic in leather is very cool looking and i own a medium and broad and i own two basics in mother of pearl, the barrel has pearlescent flecks on it while the cap and section have what looks like glitter, i don't think it is glitter though, i have one in extra fine and the other is broad, the fifth basic is the one seen in the video i enjoy the secure post and the length, the section allows me to have an excellent grip and i really like the overall look of the pen i wonder if faber-castell is ever going to come out with a #6 steel nib? it would be perfect for this pen

I love my 599-A, but I also buy Lamy pens. The 599-A is good pen to throw in your pocket or bag and you don't have to worry about it getting lost, stolen or damaged. The 599 nib and feed also come out and apart super easy for cleaning or swapping out, so I can use inks that I would never put in a pen worth ten times the price (like Platinum carbon black and glitter inks for example). It's the ultimate starter pen for potential pen nerds IMO. You can buy all the nibs, and practice grinding and tweaking to your hearts content. There are probably people with 599s that write better than their Lamys (but I'm still working on that). Is the Lamy better to write with out of the box? Yes. Would I hand my Lamy to someone (anyone) who says "can I borrow your pen?" No. It's not like it's pretending to be a Lamy. Jinhao put their branding all over it, and the nib, feed, cartridge are actually quite different and not interchangeable. A lot of people have bought a $15 Jinhao 80 before they decided to buy a Lamy 2000 for $250 (Australian prices). You could say that Jinhao is creating more sales for Lamy than they would have got otherwise, either because or in spite of the fact that the Jinhao 80 is a much closer copy of the 2000 than the Jinhao 599/Lamy Safari. One thing that you can say about fountain pen people, is they have a lot of pens. We don't just limit ourselves to Jinhao, Wing Sung, Majohn etc. but if you're on a budget and could never spend that kind of money, you still have affordable options to pursue a fountain pen hobby. Fountain pen people and and companies (looking at you TWSBI) need to stop getting their nickers in a knot about pens that are so heavily influenced. They are more of an advertisement for the real thing than anything else. Certainly, save your ire for companies producing copies that try to impersonate the branding (ie outright fakes).

Wish I'd known the Jinhao pens were ripoff, I'm a newbie kinda, used fountain pens back in the day in high school but that was it! I bought a pack of those cheap Jinhao, most of them didn't write so it wasn't much of a bargain, then I purchased a Twsbi mini with a stub nib, I LOVE it, so much that I bought the newer pink Twsbi and two of their awesome ink bottles...I am hooked now!

Hi zi am new to fountain pens too. i have watched 3 ofbyour videos and find them extremely helpful. i have always been a person that loves good penmanship. i have 2 beautiful fountain pens that I received after my father's passing. 1- w.a shaeffer 1000, #756 on nib other one waterman's Ideal#7 on the end yello on nib has a baseball symbol on penclip and side ink stem with Ideal in middle. I need an approx. value and how to clean and get up running without damaging them. the Ideal one has a broken nib, but it has ideal on it. i would assume they should be kept together? any help with care and cautions would be greatly appreciated. i am a newbie. thank you.

The value of both of these pens can vary greatly depending on the models and condition. I would recommend seeking out a local pen club or retail store which sells fountain pens in your area to find someone who can physically assess what you have. If there is an annual pen show close to where you live, that would be an excellent place to learn about your pens and see lots of other pens as well. Thanks for watching!

Great concept for a video. The eMotion does not post securely (at least mine doesn't) which drives me up the wall as the body is too short for my hand.
