Going to live abroad in retirement is increasingly becoming a choice of many retirees, both Italian and foreign. Thanks to the agreements between many countries, both INPS retirees and former Inpdap retirees are given the opportunity to be able to pay taxes in the country where their tax residence is transferred, but the countries in which tax concessions are obtained for these two categories of retirees are not always the same. In fact, while workers who receive the INPS pension will be able to choose between some countries, including European ones, to have the de-taxation of the pension, paying taxes in the chosen country such as Portugal, Greece, Albania, Bulgaria and others, former Inpdap retirees can only choose countries outside the European Union, including Tunisia, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Australia, to take advantage of the tax relief.

There are international treaties between states to avoid double taxation, after which some of these countries have decided within their tax policies to charge less tax to those who transfer their pensions there, this usually happens for a limited number of years.
Pension transfer in Portugal:
Portugal has established a tax of 10% for 10 years to those who transfer their habitual residence and therefore their pension there. Among other things, it seems that Portugal wants to increase its offer by welcoming pensioners from other countries with the 10% tax up to 15 years, given that Greece has already chosen this time limit by adopting the de- taxation for expat tax residents. If you would like more information about it, write to us and we can put you in contact with a transfer agency that will also be useful in choosing the right country for you.
Pension transfer in Greece:
Greece has chosen to join bilateral conventions between countries to avoid double taxation by making pensioners who move to Greece pay only 7% tax for the duration of 15 years. This choice of Greece, which came into effect in July 2020, is attracting many retirees to the Hellenic country who choose to live in Athens or Thessaloniki or on one of the 277 beautiful inhabited Greek islands. One of the most popular seems to be the island of Crete, given its location in the far south of Europe with a climate that remains mild from March to December.
Transfer of former Inpdap pensioners to Tunisia:
As we mentioned previously, state pensioners formerly Inpdap will be able to obtain the de-taxation of their pension from Italy by choosing to reside fiscally in Tunisia, the closest country to Italy among those mentioned above. Obviously, INPS pensioners will also be able to choose Tunisia as a destination, although the latter have a greater range of possibilities.
Tunisia has been welcoming Italian pensioners for years and some of them have chosen to live in Tunisia all year round, others for the minimum required to be habitual residents, that is to say 6 months and a day, given that for the tax regulation it is necessary to stay in the country that welcomes you at least 183 days a year, even if not consecutive.
Some of the retirees we interviewed on the KZitem channel Story Hunters tv have chosen to reside in Tunisia because their pensions are too low to support a dignified life in Italy, while in Tunisia they are able to significantly improve their standard of living, both for the de - taxation, which due to the greater purchasing power that they find themselves having in that country. Some make this choice in order to help their children, who struggle to find a stable job in Italy. Retirees do not always leave to enjoy life, some of them are forced to find alternative economic solutions in order to cope with serious subsistence problems. Among the reasons why Tunisia is very popular, some of its strengths play a role, including the climate, mild all year round, the Mediterranean quality food, the sea with its white beaches and, last but not least, the proximity to Italy. In addition to this, the Tunisian people have among their best characteristics those of being very expansive, cheerful, friendly and respectful, they hold Italians in high regard. To date, among the AIRE members, that is the Italian registry resident abroad, those resulting in Tunisia are over 6,500 pensioners and those who reside there for work reasons. When moving to a foreign country, it is recommended to take out health insurance.
