When you freaked out over Avi (2nd singer) I knew you were going to have a great Mitch reaction 😆 Pentatonix is, indeed, an a capella group. They *can* all play instruments but if there are *any* used in a song you will see them in the video - almost never happens, but there are a handful of instances. Scott, Mitch and Kirstin (blond, hat, female) were childhood friends and they picked up Avi and Kevin (the beatboxer) in order to meet the minimum number requirement to compete on The Sing-Off's 3rd season in 2011 (the trio were 19 at that time and Kevin and Avi were 22). Avi left the group in 2017 and was replaced by Matt, but that has been the only change since their start. PTX fans will be around if you keep reacting to them, for sure, and of the hundreds of songs they have from over their 10 year career, there isn't a single bad one.

I *knew* someone would beat me to this Avi/Mitch comment! I would just add that Avi left so that he could spend more time with his family - touring wasn’t conducive to this - and there was zero animosity involved. In fact, he played a big part in choosing his “replacement..”

@@salicemccool9186 Avi didn't help pick Matt. Ben Bram encouraged him to send an audition tape, but they hired a talent scouting firm to go through the blind auditions. Matt was one of 8 finalists called to audition in person with PTX. 3 months later they asked him to move to LA.

Try Mary Did You Know (even though it's out of season ... it's a carol), where you can hear Kevin Olusola sing as well as beatbox. It's also very beautiful music. Kevin also plays cello on some of their songs: check out Say Something if you want to hear him play. Scott Hoying (tall blond baritone - first solo), Kirstin Maldonado (mezzo-soprano, third solo), and Mitch Grassi (tenor/countertenor, fourth solo) went to high school together, where they were all active in choir and musical theater. They added Avi Kaplan (bass, second solo) and Kevin to have a large enough group to compete in a television competition called The Sing-Off in 2011, which they won. That's when they named themselves Pentatonix, a pun on the "pentatonic" scale and also because "pent-" signifies "five." This year is their 10th anniversary as a group. The only member of the group who has changed is the bass: Avi left in 2017 and was replaced by Matt Sallee, whom you can see/hear in Sound of Silence and Can You Feel the Love Tonight, among many others.

This is a great arrangement, but it's also straight up a *great* song. The weaving together of Biblical themes--David and Bathsheba (bathing on the roof), with a little Sampson and Delilah mixed in (she cut your hair)--which contributes a timeless quality, with the contemporary themes which speak of heartbreak, loss. and alienation, makes this song kind of reach out a grab you where you live. And then there's the transcendent with the constant repetition of Hallelujah (literally "praise the Lord"), which often appears as a cry for help, a "cold and broken hallelujah." There's something for everyone here, quite a lot for most people actually, and in the hands of this amazing group, it is nothing short of a religious journey, a religious experience. As great as Pentatonix is, and they basically never miss, for me, this is their Magnum Opus--their masterwork.

There was a time this song broke my world, The person I loved more then anything else often sung this to me, when she left I was left broken and this song used to hurt my soul, I avoided a song I have loved since the first version I knew, So many people stated how powerful this version was. I felt it was time to not let any sad memory wipe away the love or good I felt for something now tainted , So i made myself listen. This version by Pentatonix Reminded my soul what music can do, the sad pain filled memories no longer hurt me. Part of me was healed, Music is the thing all of us have in common its the emotional symphony that is our soul. It can with unstoppable force flow over the barriers created between us, washing away the divide And opening our hearts to the possibility we are one. it can heal a broken heart or or take you back to a time long lost with age, or even make you feel energetic and ready for an adventure. Sarah -- Welcome to the land of Pentaholics! You are a lovely person, and I look forward to many other reviews of my favorites -- Pentatonix. One suggestion: We understand that you have to chop up your viewing time into segments, so to preserve continuity, please go back a few beats to repeat the last bit before the cutoff. That helps. Also, if you can, try not to cut off the last minute of the song, so you can hear the finale. They build and build until there is complete harmonic sound saturation, and it's a shame to miss it. All that said, Their catalogue is gigantic, but I thought you might be interested in the medley of songs they did in Berlin for a program called, "Wettan Das." It's fabulous, and shows their pop chops.

You should listen to the Come All Ye Faithful. Kevin, who is half Nigerian, had a great deal to do with the arrangement. It is very unique and the only way I can hear the song in my head now. Also.... The Five Faces of New Pentaholics 1. The most common is the Mitch Slapped. Commonly found when Mitch is heard for the first time in Hallelujah 2. The Wide Eyed Look of Disbelief. Normally found when you hear their Wall of Sound. Found when listening to Mary Did You Know, Imagine, and Mad World. 3. The I Didn’t Want It to End face. Most commonly found after listening to the 90s Dance Medley. It can also be found after listening to all their medleys and evolutions. 4. The Teary Eyed Look. This is commonly found when listening to an emotional song of theirs or just the sheer beauty of their work. Commonly found when listening to Mary Did You Know, Hallelujah, Amazing Grace, Imagine and most especially Thank You. 5. The What Did I Just Hear Face. Happens when Pentatonix starts strong, or when you hear a really special note or Kevin sound. Is usually accompanied by rewinding the video or song to make sure your ears really heard what they heard. Those times are too many to list, but the most common rewind at the start moment is the beginning of Sound of Silence.
