I currently pay out of pocket for my Dr, prescriptions, and I am on a payment plan for the very expensive blood work I need every couple of months. The tests I need my Dr can't schedule because I have no insurance and she said they will be extremely expensive. I don't turn 65 until this December, so I have to wait. What can we be vocal about? There are several issues with healthcare coverage: -folks may have health insurance coverage and not see the doctor because of deductibles and coinsurance and copays or they may not qualify for Medicaid because they make $100 more than threshold. Mind you the $100 more above per yr they make is not even a livable wage so how do we expect that person to be able to afford any health plan in the marketplace when their employer doesn’t offer healthcare coverage or when they are unable to afford employer sponsored healthcare coverage. -the max salary per year to qualify for Medicaid needs to be increased to at least the livable income in every state. How do folks define a livable income? Is it working 40hr/wk and living paycheck to paycheck with no savings? Because if that’s the case then that person will not have any extra money to pay for any healthcare. If the max is increased to a livable income then the disproportionate profits companies make including stock buybacks while they do not pay their employees a livable income will be more apparent when folks with full time jobs still require government assistance. -Time becomes an issue when folks need more than 1 job to make a livable income. When do they go to the doctor? When are they able to buy fresh goods to make healthier meals? -Due to most Americans needing to work more than 1 job, mental health is suffering. Many folks have lost hope and are not motivated to make the behavioral changes necessary for improved quality of life. -substance use issues usually have trauma when each patient’s journey to addiction is reviewed. There needs to be a better transition from detox programs to independence. Sober living is not liked by some and there is a fear they will be kicked out if they relapse which is absurd as it is unreasonable to expect sobriety without any relapse. -the big silent killers are: diabetes and hypertension which can result in devastating complications enough to impact a person’s quality of life. Our cheapest fast foods are high in carbs, salt and fats and portion sizes are bigger than anywhere in the world. Some kids eat breakfast and lunch in school and the meal options are not healthy or appealing sometimes. The recommendations by FDA for kids includes something to the effect of:potato can be covered by all potato products. This will technically include lays chips which are high in salt with less nutritional value. Tackling what foods kids have a habit of eating as they grow up is similar to primary prevention we do with vaccines. It will lead to a population that has less risk of developing diabetes, hypertension and subsequent complications. Parents cannot focus on exercise, healthier meals for themselves and their kids if they need to work 2 jobs to earn a livable income. As you can see, tackling health of Americans requires a multilayered approach involving collaboration of several federal agencies including HHS, HUD, education and labor just to name a few. Which leads to my initial question: what can we be vocal about that will address the issues affecting healthcare access and delivery in America when politicians have conflicts of interests meaning their biggest campaign donors are the big corporations who they will need to pass laws to make less profit in order to truly improve overall health and quality of life of Americans?

Being vocal is just bitching about it to each other while they don't care. Offer us ballot initiatives to get a law before the people to vote on at the federal level. Its the only way the people have gotten any laws in our favor in states that have this for state and local law making by the people. The alternative is laws made by the rich who bribe congress and everybody else working two jobs and living in tents.

Exactly, The reason we have to buy our healthcare at the company store and get locked into their system where you get overpriced lousy service with huge deductibles and copays, is because FDR and the incompetent Democrats put on wage and price controls in WW2 and companies were forced to offer healthcare to draw in good employees because they couldn't raise wages. The way to fix healthcare is to get the government and employer out of healthcare, so if people dont like the service or prices, they can walk across the street. The competition for customers would drive up quality of service and drive down prices.
