I can be mean so you don't have too. I've been shooting for 58 years, alive for 69. I shoot competitively, owned a gun shop, and instructed. It is my opinion that 80% of all gun owners can just barely load and shoot their guns in a safe direction. Most do not care about getting better, and do not have the capacity to diagnose what they are doing wrong (or right), which is why you keep getting these questions. And this is with all of the available information on the internet. Just imagine what this was like before the internet? I owned my gun shop in the late 70's into the late 80's, and stupid questions reigned supreme. Stupid questions will never go away.

The questions I ask have changed a lot the more I train and read on PSTG. I used to ask things like "what gun should I shoot", "what ammo should I shoot", "what dot do I need", all to come to conclusion of... if you can't shoot, it doesn't really matter. When started to actually shoot my questions changed to "how many days a week should I shoot", "how many rounds should I shoot a month", "what drills should I do", all to come to the conclusion of... it depends on how you use them. Now (thanks to this channel and PSTG) I ask, "why am I not target focused", "what caused this shot to go here", "was my support hand really doing anything", ect ect. Long way of saying, thank you for assisting us in learning what questions to actually ask.

I have come to realize that learning to diagnose what you are doing and what is happening as you train(in anything really) is one of the most useful skills you can learn. The little nuanced differences between different ammo, guns, optics, and setups are often very personal and don’t always apply well to everyone.

Honestly think its a confidence thing. Its not usually until we succeed at something that we understand what mattered and what didnt in the end. Sometimes people are trying to relieve conflict in their own mind by just being told what to choose. Sometimes on the range at matches its hard to tune out all the gear type conversation so we go to trusted sources to iron it out. So I think the answer is no to do you trust your own perception. I honestly believe if people such as Stoeger were able to somehow teach the thinking process leading to the mentality of letting things go and relax it would be priceless. I used to not know but at the time was the Doodie Project and it was all right there for me. I bought some books, started dry firing in my garage and soon I was racking up 2 cent ribbons all over my state. I learned early on from Doodie that bullets, guns and the nuances of how the guns, the ammo are set up really don't matter. What does matter is putting in the work in the garage and then at the range. I only shoot GSSF now and FWIW I put some tape on my optic to see what it's all about. OK, I see the dot and the target is still there and I feel cross eyed. I look at the target, I look at the dot - I put a piece of blue tape an focus on that. I don't really get it because my times really don't differ much (in GSSF) from irons or dots.....

I come from a different industry, but the principle is the same: They think that if they shoot the same weight bullet, from the same model gun, with the same recoil spring, and the same this and that and this other thing, that they will shoot as well as you do. Granted, some things may make shooting easier, or more convenient, but the vast majority of people need to get good training, and practice regularly. Is it expensive? Yup. That's just one use case scenario. In a different context the dot size matters more or less and there is preference. Test both dot sizs at a different course of fire, switching between close and far away targets. You'd have to train with one constant setup for a few weeks to tell.

@@hopewilliams6705 Damn auto adjust. A nuclear star won't do. I've seen a few that like the big ones at lots of hoser stuff. For some they like it cause they do less over confirmation with the big dots others can easily ignore nervous movement and like a small dot. In defense or m&p context I've seen very bright dots. The goal is to not have to adjust and incoming light can't wash it out easily. Since I saw more of the target focused shooting with irons, I'm a bit torn to even get one myself. (I have had weekly access to different dots on handguns for 2 years so far). I have to say I wouldn't carry one unless my eyes worsen. I've seen so many fail in matches, with lint, rain, snow and lately plant pollen again. For the range I was st on an ugly steiner but dropped the idea just by having big jumps between brightness levels. 8 daylight, 2 NV. To the grain debate: In my opinion it depends on the type of bullet you are using and the distance you are shooting at. - Hollow-Points need velocity to expand, so with a lighter bullet one can get more velocity and so a bigger chance of a correct expansion. - With FMJ momentum is more important for penetration, so a heavier bullet has an advantage. - For shots on larger distances, lighter bullets get easier distractet, heavier bullets need more time to reach the target and so they are influenced by gravity more than lighter (faster) bullets. On moving targets on larger distances heavier bullets are on a disadvantege as well, because of the time they need to reach it. My personal conclusion: For special situations that you know about beforehand, one can use the special ammunition that fits the job perfectly (special situations like: sport-shooting a defined course on defined distances, or taking a handgun for a finalising headshot on hunting). For all other situations, that you can't tell beforehand (like carrying for a hopefully never nessecary self-defence situation) to me it makes more sence to not go to any "extremes", so take "the middle". But I'm no expert, just a guy on the internet.

Hey Ben, Speaking of asking bad questions haha... M level shooter here training hard to GM this year. Question... I compete in CO which has restrictions (no ports/magwells). I have a ported gucci g19 for carry which is super smooth and flat shooting, but I train 95% of the time with a stock-ish CO g19. Would you move the percentages? 50-50 maybe? I worry that training more with the gucci gun then "stepping down" to a CO setup for competition may hurt performance as I need to adjust to a different, frankly higher, level of recoil sensation. My current thinking is train with the pistol that's more difficult to shoot, then the gucci carry will just feel that much easier to shoot. Am I thinking about this correctly? -Or over thinking it? Thoughts? Appreciate your time, thanks. Regards, Will
