Oklahoma is home to diverse communities. The Oklahoma Historical Society Multicultural Office (OHSMO) aims to develop programs and outreach initiatives to tell the story of Oklahoma’s diverse heritage and give voice to these historically underrepresented communities. OHSMO is currently developing the “People of Oklahoma” series to share that diversity.
In this episode, Rebecka Peterson answers questions posed by educators from across Oklahoma. Peterson is the 2023 National Teacher of the Year and was also named the 2022 Oklahoma Teacher of the Year.
As described in her biography, she is “a math teacher who loves stories.” After teaching math and calculus at Union High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma, she is spending a year touring the country, elevating the profession of education by highlighting positive teachers’ stories in the same way she did share stories of joy happening in her classroom. Peterson is a proud immigrant of Swedish-Iranian descent. She lived in several countries with her parents, who were medical missionaries. Her experience allows her to understand and value each individual to meet them exactly where they are as her way of understanding and elevating their voice.
The Oklahoma Historical Society Multicultural Office also holds several in-person events that include authentic traditions celebrated by the respective communities so that these cultures can be shared, appreciated, and experienced. A series of video interviews are being recorded to create a historical record of the voices of community leaders from many backgrounds. Stories of resiliency, hope, tenacity, and innovation are being added to the expansive library of live interviews, video documentaries, and oral histories in the OHS archives.
