Hold up bro. I pay $4,000 for a MAWL and all they give me is a one year warranty with a POSSIBLE after that???

Are you comparing a full power MAWL to a peq15? Or civilian MAWL? I would assume that would change things
@mustangduckk

For this discussion, FP peq and civ MAWL. Going FP to FP would further increase the price differential, and negate a major benefit of the MAWL as discussed.

I was playing with my friends full power peq 15 that he was issued. The illuminator isn't perfect. I think it depends what batch you get. meanwhile my dbal i2 is perfect but it sucks its civilian.

Yeah the FP ones vary quite a bit in illum quality. Some are really clean, some are noisy or have lighter and darker areas. Buy from someone you trust or get pics or inspect it in advance.

I have not played with any of the new focusing devices. They are probably better than nothing with the civ models, but I doubt they are going to get the high power punch delivered by the FP PEQs.

Another consideration is the ease of ambidextrous use without a switch. The mawl sucks to shoot left handed (or the opposite of however you have it configured).

Comparable. Both are 5mw, PEQ15 is red MAWL is green. Usable to get a zero at dusk but neither are useful for anything in full daylight.

Gotta get lucky with peq…. I got super lucky and have the cleanest illuminator I’ve found yet on KZitem or in person….. sucks cause I’m looking to move to ngal but once I sell …… it’s gone …. I had a mawl and it’s a great laser….sold it for a raid xe…. Mawl doesn’t work well for a hk 416

Yeah good point. Not all PEQs are created equal. Noise and overall quality of illum can vary quite a bit. Seeing in person or buying from someone trusted is a good idea for a number of reasons.

The bore offset of the MAWL is much greater than I'd like. I'd think that should be mentioned in any discussion of the 2.
@mustangduckk
2 жыл бұрын
Maybe. Has not been a factor with anything I’ve done. A good day zero with your red dot and the laser converged and the offset is negligible. Most laser shots are going to be at 200 or less, any further than that and it’s time to start thinking about a clip on or thermal or something.
@jfk767none4

Most professionals will suggest a parallel vs converging zero. That allows for a constant offset rather than either accepting a much larger margin for error or having to adjust for impact with an unknown and/or ever changing offset. That said I suppose a converging zero isn't the worst compromise. If you are willing to accept the greater dispersion. I've shot the army popup course with IR lasers and night vision more than once and I've shot out past 400 with the same setup but you are right in that for most people it's limited to 200 or so.

@@jfk767none4 If you zero at 100, you're not going to be off more than the physical offset of the optic out to 200. Beyond that, drop becomes a factor even with a parallel.

@@UnobtaniumsQuickReviews while there's a lot of truth to that I still don't think it's the best solution. I think the best option is to use a constant offset zero and establish the same zero distance as your day optic. That way you only need to remember one set of variables as you shoot. If you have a 300 yard zero on your day optic but a 100 yard converging zero on the laser you have to remember two sets of external ballistics data to maximize your potential. Add to that the horizontal offset issues with the converging zero and you add the variable of the laser being 2 inches to the right of your POA at short range and 2 inches to the left at 200. I think that using the same zero distance, even if it means zeroing at a distance beyond the shooters real world potential for night vision firing in the field, is the best option. If the shooter can't hit past 200 with night vision they probably aren't capable at 300 in the day. If that's the case a 300 yard zero in daylight may not be best for them anyway. The Army has, by FM, 2 acceptable zero distances for the service rifle, 200 or 300 yards. The 200 is flatter shooting and arguably more practical in the real world but many default to the 300 due to the qualification course of fire (ACOG excepted). The Army's combat teams often use a 265 yard zero because it maximizes effective range while keeping the impacts within the 5 ring out to 300 yards with a center hold. At that point the only hold needed is at the 400 yard line, at least for the EIC match. There's a lot of variables to track, everything from equipment and shooter limitations to mission and a whole host of other factors but I still believe the constant offset is the superior solution and using the same zero range for day and night fire makes it easier as well. That said, my solution may not fit your situation.

I should clarify, when I said the army combat teams often use a 265 yard zero I mean the competitive marksmanship teams that shoot the combat matches rather than the service rifle matches.
