Fantastic review! Thank you for addressing the capture clip compatibility!! I’ve searched through so many reviews on KZitem and websites looking for someone to mention it. It’s such an integral part of my camera gear.

This is a great review, Dan. You deliver the information from a position of authority, because you've used the pack, and clearly know it very well, and I have no doubt you're just as thorough with the Tilopa - which is where I'm headed next. Hints of good humour only added to the delivery. (I just watched a review of a Manfrotto pack where the guy just sat down and seemingly knew nothing about the product, then tried to be funny. Without success.) Pros and cons are also very valuable, because at the moment I'm a fair way from any large camera store, so have to rely on excellent reviews like yours.

Thanks for taking the time for such great feedback, and happy it helped! I like watching the early reviews on bigger channels like anyone else, but I can't compete with them. So I'm really trying to lean in to the angle of continuously reviewing the gear I have over time, in hopes of helping people in similar stages or with similar use cases (or different ones, to rule things out). And I upload less often than I'd like so I try to make sure I've really given gear a healthy try for when I do upload. The Tilopa is still holding up great and I just packed that today for a small shoot this weekend. I'm still opting for that when I want to bring everything. And I recently took the Ajna on a snowy Ottawa excursion!

Excellent video. I'm an older guy, hikes are not terribly long so I usually just pack the camera gear and not clothes and non-camera stuff. I was thinking of getting this bag with the large ICU. Personally, I HATE side openings. I can't tell you how many times I forget to zip up the side only to have a lens fall out while I'm putting the bag on. Thankfully I never damaged a lens but I'll never get a bag with side openings. I think I'll take the plunge but $400+ is a lot for a bag. Maybe I'll get the bag and say sorry to my wife later after she gives me hell. Thanks again!!!

Thanks for comment! It's a shame they aren't a bit more affordable - many people probably avoid what would be an excellent fit for them because of it. The apology strategy might work best 😂 So far, both this and older style Tilopa, which I've had longer, are holding up great!

Appreciate it! It's super important to me to have this compatibility as I'm pretty deep in the Peak Design ecosystem. Even when I'm not carrying my camera on the shoulder for a long amount of time, I do like the option to free up my hands completely.

This is a video that's possible because of this channel 👇 If it's your first time here, thanks for watching! If you've been here long enough to remember my freelance update vids, you know that this channel is only a small trickle of income at this size. However, even a small amount lets me take the occasional small bet on some gear. Without it, I wouldn't have bought an Ajna after a Tilopa. But having both allows me to make a better video, and to make better recommendations in the future. For the last several months, I've packed both for weekend trips - one with an ICU, one without (for clothes and everything else). The Tilopa was much better suited for my road trip and for packing everything to bring onsite to shoot. The Ajna much better for flying and city travel. I look forward to the next several years of putting them both to the continued test!

Thanks for the kind words, glad it was helpful! Pack week around late November is definitely the time to jump in on f-stop stuff if you think it's a good fit and can wait. I could be wrong, but I think they reliably run that sale week and not much, if any others, throughout the year.

Hey man, really good review, like the one for the Tilopa. I wonder if you have used the Lowepro Powder 500 AW and how it compares to Tilopa and/or Ajna.

Thanks, appreciate the comment! I haven't used it, but just poked around on some vids and written reviews. Looks like there's a lot to like and it combines features of the Tilopa and X50. I'm not the biggest fan of the buckle top, but I do like the expandable drawstring top that lies underneath. And the ICU is most similar tot he f-stop ones. It's hard to tell how the exterior compares to those other two bags, but if you don't have a strong preference there, it could be a great way to get something pretty similar more affordably.

I really like your channel, thank you for your reviews! I bought a Shimoda X50 bag in the spring, it was great for several points. But I decided to return it. I found the straps too wide, the black fabric has a plastic appearance, the bag a boxy look, the sleeve has no velcro or zip to hold the laptop, no storage-pocket in the back panel, and no pouch on the belt. Otherwise for the rest, I really liked the bag despite the negative points I mention. I miss the bag, because I came back with my old lowepro pro-tactic-350, which is small, with no place to keep a coat and lunch. I wonder, have you looked at the shimoda bags? The Ajna is on my list, but I hesitate with the Tilopa which seems big to me for hikes without nights. The straps of the Ajna seem to have a worse padding than the shimoda? Best regards

Thanks for the feedback! "I really liked the bag despite the negative points I mention"... Unfortunately, I think there's always going to be at least a little bit of this going on, no matter how happy you are with any bag overall. Everyone has lots of little personal preferences and it's hard to find perfection. I do think the Ajna size is probably what you'd be most happy with, but I'm not sure it's the right bag given what you've described. You may need a separate laptop sleeve at least, and the straps are probably too thin for your liking. So far I've liked them, but I have yet to hike for much longer distances with this bag. A follow-up, long-term review is likely something I do as I find more likes/dislikes over the next year or two. The Tilopa straps are indeed more padded, but for me, this bag fits a bit better on my 5'8" frame. I also don't load it fully with lenses like on my road trip so it has been comfortable so far. I took a serious look at Shimoda and Wandrd. The PolarPro Boreal will be in the same class but also on the bigger side.

As you say there is never a perfect bag, you just have to choose the one that did best. For me there are three things that are less to my taste on the Ajna, the height of the pouches for the water bottle (because the bottles will often fall by experience), the robustness of its pouches to hold the tripod, the thickness of the straps ( but it probably quite correct). For the rest, I really like the mountain style look and the design of the Ajna. When I travel, I bring an iPad Pro 13" and more lenses, but I remove them from the bag when arrived to my destination. During my hikes (10-16km), I typically bring the R5, RF24-70, RF70-200F4, Medium Tripod, Zoom H6, head lamp, CPOL, CP+ND 4stop, NDVariable. Sometime, I add a 50mm f0.95 and a GoPro+Gimbal. I may consider adding an RF100-500 to my kit, but I will always limit myself to 3 lens during the hikes. I'm 5' 7", and I don't want to have a bag that's too big. I don't like thick padding, I prefer thin padding, but with high density as on pro-tactic. It's just difficult to see in videos and photos if the padding is high density and appropriate. Thank you again and by the way, it was your review of the RF70-200 that made me choose this one! Congratulations for the Ajna.

Of course and thanks. If this video helps people rule this bag out, I count that as a win too. That way it only gets in the hands of those that it is really fitting for. I'm definitely going to try to bring my GoPro along more this year. I haven't been using it for hockey as much in the last year so I want to start using it here more. I've been thinking of the 100-500 for a long time too... the price just has me a little hesitant. I think it would go on to be one of my favorite lenses, up there with the 70-200.

Hi Dan, I just wanted to tell you that I finally bought the green Ajna. It's really the bag I've been looking for a long time. The padding of the straps is comfortable and equivalent to my Lowepro protactic bag. There is plenty of space and pouch, the quality of the dura diamond fabric is exceptional, the insert has a super padding. To my surprise and after verification with f-stop, they removed the key holder, the pouch under the bag for the rain cover and the mesh in the side pockets, for the purpose of cutting down on weight because the ambassadors/customers did not find this useful. This weekend I went for a hike and found the bag very comfortable. So it's not a perfect bag, but for me it's close. The only thing I'm not sure about is the side meshes. Best regards

@@yvanoid7807 Nice, so glad to hear the straps work for you! And thanks a ton for the heads up about the changes, hopefully others will find that helpful as well. I kinda understand the mesh in the side pouches... that's something I could certainly live without. The key ring I could as well. For true adventure users they probably don't care where their keys go as they won't need them until they get back to the car. It's certainly nice for city/hybrid use though. Removing the bottom pocket baffles me a bit. Maybe it's just because I find that so useful, but in my mind this bag isn't the lightest to begin with. And cutting those three things certainly isn't going to magically put this bag in a lighter weight class. All that said, I trust they're listening to their most core customers so it is cool to see them rapidly implementing feedback. I just think many people might miss that bottom pocket. Will definitely update in a long term review about my side pouches. I'm starting to book some trip starting later this month so it'll get some good use this year. Thanks again for taking such time to comment 😀

Is it too big to be a "personal item" on an airplane? Will it fit under the seat?
@DanYosua
Жыл бұрын
Hopefully someone who has tried can weigh in, but in my estimation it's definitely too big. If you could get away with it, I think it would be too uncomfortable in a regular seat. Since this video I did get a bigger laptop and sleeve, and I'm trying the small ICU. Using those two together still allows for lots of room above the ICU, but the depth of the bag is still going to give you issues under the seat. Without an ICU, and not stuffed full, you might be able to though.

@@DanYosua I saw a written review that said the Lotus 32L does fit under the seat. Unfortunately the Ajna is the smallest bag that will fit a 15" laptop. I know these are really made to be hiking camera bags, and most people aren't taking a laptop hiking, lol, but I'm looking for a bag with an internal frame to travel with, because with my current bag, walking around cities is killing my back, even when it's not loaded!

@@huntstyle haha this is a classic case of "wouldn't it be cool if everyone could magically combine the features that they needed" that everyone seems to have with camera bags. I just took a closer look at the specs of both... it is tough to tell where the extra 5 liters is hiding, they're pretty similar. If someone is truly managing with the Lotus then maybe it's not as crazy as I thought.

@@DanYosua yeah, it's so hard to find the right bag for your particular uses! Even for one person, it's likely going to take more than 1 bag in order to cover different uses. No such thing as the perfect bag! I've already gone through about a half dozen, haha!

@@DanYosua I've been on the fence with either the Ajna or Tilopa so I contacted F-Stop as I wanted to know if the XL fits in the Ajna ok. I have a 500mm f4 and want the smallest bag possible that can fit it in. They say it fills the whole bag with no space above so you just have to feed the lens up through the access door into the top kinda thing. Cheers for the video it's helped with making my choice.
