Are you sure it’s safe to shoot factory 308 Winchester in these? I have started shooting a load I worked for another pickier bolt gun and it shoots well from this rifle and hits at 100M with the notch which I believe is the 100M setting. When I got my FR8 I was warned the actions were suspect and were loaded with special reduced loads. I feel that IMR4350 load I’m using while accurate is likely not too likely to generate high enough pressures to exceed the 7.57 or 8x57 Mausers the rifles were made from.
@VintageRiflesShootersClub
11 ай бұрын
@@308dad8 this was covered many times across the net, but here is the best quote which addresses FR7 as well: “The FR-8 is strong enough for .308win. I had an FR-7 that was not; and have an FR-8 now. The small-ring Spanish Mausers that were re-arsenalled from 7mm Mauser to 7.62CETME are potentially dangerous, since the 7.62CETME has the same external dimensions as .308win, but had only about 60% of the pressure. The small ring actions were also pre-98: The 1898 model Mauser action incorporated a third locking lug on the bolt, as well as better gas-handling. With the '96 small ring actions, you'd probably get a face-full of hot gas well before the metal fails and frags. Of course, a main difference between the .308win, the 7.62NATO, and the 7.62CETME is the proper amount of headspace, so checking the specific gun's chamber is more important than blanket statements about ammo types. The large-ring, '98 action can handle the higher pressure easily, (it's not dissimilar to 8mm Mauser)....although I've found with my FR-8 that 7.62NATO is a bit more forgiving on the shoulder than .308win, and just as accurate.”

Gotta be a tossup between my pre war Czech VZ33 and my 1903A4. The VZ was drilled and tapped, with a K4 on it, when I found it. When I hunt with the A4, I go to either a 6 or 8x Lyman and that lets me keep the scope low. Gotta explain. 70 years old, knees, shoulders are worn out, cataracts coming on hard, so I set up on a ridge here in Idaho, and let the Grandkids retrieve game! I set up a G33/40 as a 220 Swift, and a 03A3 as a 22-250 Ackley Imp. for varmints. Both do very well at longish range, me, not so much! Enjoy the show! Have fun, don't get caught!

I haven't seen an FR8 in a couple of decades. They were the transition rifle for the Spanish military when they moved from the Mauser to the CETME. Used to see those regularly for under $200. Good rifles, one that I should picked up, but at the same time, you could get a .303 British rifle for half what it cost.

I've been a No4 fan since the early 90s when i picked up a Savage made No4. The chamber was trashed, so reloading the brass wasn't possible, but since I was able to get 100 rounds of new production .303 British for $20, it wasn't a problem. Hansen Cartridge Company. The ammo was made in Yugoslavia, so it all dried up when the Serbs and Croats went at after Yugoslavia split. I need to dig my No4 out of the safe and take it to the range. It's been entirely too long.

@@BFVgnr Hello. I do not know where you live, but I just checked on .303 Brit ammo suppliers a couple of days ((after a silly person said it was an "Obsolete cartridge" on a different Y.T. page.)) and there are several companies that make and market .303 Brit ammo. "Federal", "Hornady", "Remington/ "U.M.C.", "Winchester", "Prvi Partizan", "Sellier and Bellot". I would imagine/guess that maybe a company in Australia, Canada or N.Z. would make .303 Brit ammo because so many British army surplus Lee-Enfield rifles were sold in the U.K. commonwealth countries. The ammo made in the former "Yugoslavia" is named "Prvi Partizan". They are open and doing.

In the late 60s I bought a Swedish Mauser carbine, 6.5x55 intending to make it into a project rifle/sporter. In the end I used a Mauser 98 action instead. I never modified the Swedish Mauser but used it "as is" as a "utility rifle" on our family ranch where it served many decades as a good coyote/deer-of-opportunity rifle and didn't mind being bounced around in the truck. I still have it. It will be handed down as-is to one of my sons or grandsons It really is a great hunting rifle, as is. The Spanish FR8 has even better sights and a better chambering for all-around use. Thanks Rob!

Alright, this is where I have to mention that of all the surplus rifles I've bought, the FR8 might be the one I had the highest expectations for that I was the most disappointed in. On paper, it seems great- surplus, aperture sights, 7.62x51, feeds from stripper clips, fairly short. Realistically, the triggers aren't great, mine does have the sticky follower issue that I haven't managed to fix yet, it's heavier than it looks, has more unpleasant recoil than you'd think, a sticker and slower bolt than I expected, and I've never seen one under $500. I'm not saying don't buy one, but from a functionality standpoint a modern bolt action like a Ruger American Predator is going to be more accurate, more pleasant to shoot, barely more expensive, and have a muzzle thread it's easier to find accessories for.
@VintageRiflesShootersClub

Well, I can't speak for your rifle, but mine has been grate, as you could see, I had no issues putting 2 shots from standing position at 150yds into the same spot. Recoil could be snappy on those, but personally it doesn't bother me much. But I understand what you are saying.
@makky-kat3719

@@VintageRiflesShootersClub Really my problem with mine is that I expected it to be everything I'd wanted in a bolt-action rifle, and then in reality it's just another Mauser with decent iron sights and chambered in a still-popular cartridge. It shoots fine, the feeding problem is probably fixable, but if anyone else is overly enamored with the iron-sighted-bolt-action scout rifle concept, prepare for a somewhat underwhelming experience with the FR8. Not that I plan on selling mine, it's definitely cool and fun enough to keep.

One of the skills or attributes of an expert riflemen is knowing when not to shoot. He’s spent enough time practicing and competing to know what’s possible with a rifle. What can be done with high confidence and what is marginal. The best riflemen achieve nearly one shot one kill while hunting by simply not shooting if they don’t like the shot. This can seem counter intuitive to those of less experience, believing they are missing out on opportunities, especially while hunting pressured public lands where shot opportunities are few. Rest assured, the feeling of wounding and failing to recover one of our precious game animals is magnitudes worse than the feeling you missed an opportunity to shoot because it wasn’t a high confidence shot. Thanks for making these videos. What’s the availability and price of that little rifle?
