Rob had opera training in college, Austin has a degree in musical theater with a bit of opera thrown in. Austin talked Rob into doing this to show off Rob’s “hidden talent”. Rob wouldn’t do it without Austin singing with him. Nice surprise, huh? Shocked everyone! They said “one and done” tho’! They are awesome!

Take your point but I'm not so sure we haven't heard that Italianate dropped larynx before. Rob was using it in his solos in the Sea Shanty Medley. I've noticed that reactors get the goosebumps from Austin, doing what a bright-toned lyric tenor does.

Of course, you didn’t say what kind of music that you prefer, so hopefully those will appeal to you.

You might have a look at a reaction by the Bangkok Vocal Coach, who has both training and experience in opera. He loved both voices, but said that Austin (the lyric tenor) nailed it and was more marketable in today's world. Italianate opera is going out of fashion, and so are the Italianate tenors that go with it. Austin has one of the most distinctive talents in any genre.

Singing training is much the same, whichever genre you end up singing in. Austin was trained from about age 15 (?) and all the way through college. The tutors there wanted him to continue and do opera (probably knowing that a really good lyric tenor is worth his weight in gold to opera houses) but he decided not to. The difference in their voices is not so much down to training as to physiology. Jen Glatzhofer in her reaction to this gives an excellent explanation of the physical factors involved.

Jamal, I know you have reacted to all kinds of artists and genres on your channel and I know you have your favorite bands of all time and Home Free was not in your top 10 list which is fine. But I got a sense this is one of the most surprising performances you have seen and the realization that not too many artists could pull something like this off. I believe each of the guys in Home Free are as talented as any of the top famous male solo singers and bands we have known over the past 70 years that we are all familiar with, and they are all in one single group. Imo, that makes them one of the best vocal groups of all time simply because they do not need musical instruments to accompany them.
@patriciamcl54
Жыл бұрын
I take your point but the fact that they are an a capella band is not what makes them great. After all, some of their most successful recordings have instruments (Save the World, Dreamer with Texas Hill, Born in the USA). It is the fact that almost by accident they have arrived at a point where four exceptional voices and a brilliant producer mesh together perfectly, not forgetting the amazing Adam Rupp.

I'm not a big opera fan at all, but I love this aria, it's so beautiful. And Rob was A-MAZING. He actually has opera training from his college years, but hasn't sung it since (15 years). Opera is not something anyone can just get up and do right, it takes years of training. Opera singer and music reactor Maggie Renee said that Rob's performance was nearly perfect, and an Italian voice coach said that she forgot he and Austin weren't Italian because their pronunciation was so good, especially Rob's. Austin is not an opera singer, but his music theater training came though and he did a great "crossover."

Of course I hope that both will always continue to do Home Free, but I wouldn't think it wrong that such "trips" are made more often. Opera, country, ballads, soul etc. I think anything is possible..
