It’s a kind of heartache for all the perfumes I wore over the decades to be gone. The hunt is not fun. It’s hard to risk the money knowing there is a chance they will be spoiled. Then, I wonder why am I holding onto the past. Smelling perfumes in shops is one of the most joyful things to do, and when I discover something new, that’s extra wonderful. Can find my vintage miniatures now and then but I find I really don’t want to wear them now. It’s just nostalgia-a sweet kind of ache. Really enjoy your KZitem channel-thank you.

I'm the same way in that I don't do very much vintage hunting. I often find them overpriced for things that have lost the top notes. There are so many exciting things coming out of small indie and artisan houses these days... Gather, Lost Tribe, Miyaz, Elixir Attar, Ensar, Areej, Phronema, Anna Zworykina, Katana, etc etc ... the quality and artistry are insane.

@@TheScentinel Oh god, it's such a rabbit hole, I could go on and on with a list of houses. Now that my nose is in deep in the artisan world, I just can't go anywhere else. You get the incredible quality of ingredients like you describe with the vintages, but with modern techniques and sensibilities.

I have been in the fragrance game for many years. The more new fragrances that I try, the more I go back to my favorites that were released 15+ years ago. I have backups of Gucci Pour Homme II, Envy for Men, Poivre 23, etc. I enjoy some newer fragrances, but I find a lot of them to be uninspiring.

Great post thanks. Theres a lot of fun in fossicking ,in fact its a national sport in UK as everyone is so skint. But finding an old vintage perfume in a charity shop is fun! Got a mint bottle if OG Givenchy 111 which was heaven. So many good points in your post though, snobbery remains alive in the frag world. I have about 50 bottles now, biggest thing to take from this is yes+there are some niche/indy houses that are making amazing scents that are new. Nostalgia aint what it used to be

I prefer to come from a place of abundance and not from scarcity. Your talk reminded me that fear of not having enough(of anything) is not good for the spirit. As you have probably heard a clenched hand cannot receive. Nostalgia has its place but not as a guiding principle. Cheers!

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and the inspiration to reflect on how we deal with discontinued or reformulated fragrances. Though I agree with most of your viewpoints I just want to add that times are tough for all lovers of chypres. IFRA regulations are really challenging and sadly it is getting harder to find good ones. Limitations for oakmoss are only one part of the problem. The other is that chypres seem to be a bit out of style so there might be less investment in finding good substitutes for restricted/limited ingredients. As a consequence the only fragrance I have a back up bottle for is the former Chanel Cristalle. I just wasn’t ready to let it go.

We’re stuck to our expectations and it often leads to disapointment. And yes, there are so many new offerings, so clinge to something that is gone by now, need to be released. Thank you for sharing, a much needed reminder. Greetings from Croatia.

I do have some vintage bottles, some smell good, others not so much. I realised with the ones I had purchased out of that feeling of nostalgia, of where I was and what was happening in my life, that was what I was longing for; it was the nostalgia of that portion of time I wanted to revisit, maybe not necessarily the perfume, because I found they rarely smell exactly as I remembered, there are too many variables in the mix. Now, I know I am happy to simply have fond memories of what was with that fragrance, without necessarily needing it. Also, I have to agree with you, I have more than enough bottles already to see me out till the end😅

Sometimes when people buy a new bottle and then complain about reformulation, I wonder how long their old bottle stayed in their collection. Perfumes do slowly change in scent over time, and the changes are often gradual enough that a regular sprayer might not notice the incremental difference between sprays of the same bottle, but might notice a difference between the end of their 5 year old bottle and the start of a fresh one. A slightly different scent doesn’t necessarily have to mean that the formula has changed.

i agree with your optimism about the "bigger pallet" where perfumers have twice the choices for ingredients, but i dont think thats the reason it will never be the same again...its because everything is corporate now unless its super expensive (theres some examples of super quality but reasonable like Rogue for example). think about the fact that people could buy the original formula of opium for women at a regular department store back in the 80s. they know we'll pay $100usd an ounce for garbage that cost them 5 bucks to make nowadays.

There were a select few instances for me where backups were very useful because I ended up cracking into them, but on the whole, if I'm not planning on selling a couple in the future at an inflated price, they just take up valuable resources. I'm with you on reforms though. As regulations get updated each year, most fragrances are constantly being reworked, which means that every batch is technically discontinued annually and replaced with a new one. It's half of a perfumer's job to make sure the new one smells the same or damn close. That fact often seems to get overlooked in the community. But it's a business, and like you said, there are plenty of perfumes in the sea. Fishing is part of the fun.

Great video, Pep! Pragmatic > Dogmatic, always. I'll share some of of what I posted on Basenotes: I want to bring to relief some very important phenomena in the realm of vintage vs. modern fragrance formulation: 1. The power of suggestion. 2. Untenable olfactive perceptions. 3. Mistaking the nature of degradation as markers of superiority. 4. The myth that the past was inherently better. The failure to realize all sensory stimuli are in flux depending on variable conditions. With all of this in mind, I've learned to take much of what is said with a sizable grain of salt until I myself have made a determined comparison. Also, the biggest lesson for the passionate fragrance enthusiast is looking at intention. Can we not be happy with the version that we have, to be present with it, because we always feel there is something better on the horizon? I've seen enthusiasts go from head over heels for a modern or recent formulation to changing their tune and condemning the same version as a "shell of its former self" once a vintage/older version is acquired, or even if they've simply heard this rumor. It seems suspect. Also, this is one expensive hobby. With the necessity of significant disposable income compared to the general populace, a strange form of elitism arises. That's a whole other can of worms. It takes a certain place of privilege (sorry, I know this is way overused in our current age, bear with me) to be confident as to make such proclamations of superiority in vintages. What grinds my gears is that it can be condescending, even belittling to others, who've carved their own space of joy for whatever version they have, as these discussions often come off as not so tactful, sensitive, or diplomatic.

You are wise and pragmatic. As a hobby, one may sample thousands of fragrances but, it is not a mentally healthy person who acquires a collection of 1,2,3K or more full bottles. All fragrances will spoil and die, just like us. Imagine, if one has only 365 fragrances, all 100 ml, and rotate a different one each day, using 1ml each day, it would take 100 years to finish all 365 bottles. Sadly, there is one influencer, who is very knowledgeable and charismatic, but his obsession is a vice that consumes him and, sadly, it cost him his marriage.
