Oye Harry, regarding your example: 'I've been to Spain, but I've also been to Portugal.' Wouldn't we use AND in this sentence? BUT is definitely used in English to provide contrast with or contradict the second clause as in your second example. (Spanish has a habit of complicating things: two words for 'for', two verbs for 'to be' and now two words for 'but'. 'Que' and ''cual' are also a lot of fun to distinguish between. My theory is that Spanish speakers have not simplified the original Latin anywhere near as much as we Anglos have done or even as much as our French cousins have done for that matter. For example, in eliminating the past forms of the subjunctive in spoken French and using only the present subjunctive they make it a lot easier to learn both for their own children as well as for us foreign learners. But besides all this, castellano is a great language, and I enjoy studying it).

Hola Robert! Yes, you could definitely use 'and' instead of 'but' in that example - I guess it would depend on the context of the conversation beforehand. Spanish definitely does seem like it complicates a lot of things! Nonetheless I agree with you that it is a great language to learn 😎
