Any tips on the best order to join the pieces Jane? Start in a corner? Or in the middle?

Hello - we tend to do the joining on Persian Tiles in rows but the rule of thumb is: if you get to a corner and can join another motif without cutting the yarn then go for it!

Hello there - we tend to join them in rows but honestly if you find a rhythm that works for you then there is no set way really. There isn't a way (that we have found) that is continuous so sewing in ends is unavoidable!

Some do it diagonally across -from top triangle to octagon to square to octagon

Double crochet? Is it single across the pond?

no information on how to do the edges? I'm reading the pattern and it doesn't tell me how many stitches to do around the edge of the blanket before starting the edges...

Hi there - the navy round (Round 1 of the edging section) is that first round which you do to even up the edges. The stitch counts are included on that. Round 2 onwards is the decorative part of the edging. If you have a look at the photo on page 11 you'll be able to see the little round of Navy (it is especially clear in the bottom left corner) so hope that makes sense.

With the eastern jewels pattern, it says buttermilk is the first foundation for the border but does not instruct me how to do it other than single crochet. And then round 1 is storm blue… little lost

Did you figure it out by any chance? Having the same problem right now.

I think the Foundation means the joining color. ROUND 1 in Blue is the round that makes the edge even. Then the decorative edge starts in Row 2 with Butter and continues.
