Welcome to my personal growing review of Rose ‘Skylark’-(Ausimple) from david Austin roses NOW !
Bred and introduced in 2007, and named after the Skylarks that apparently flyover the nursery and Show Gardens in Shropshire Skylark forms an elegant and graceful shrub around 4’ x 4’ and is one of the varieties that he’s going to benefit from a little bit of support I would suggest a peony hoop
A free flowering variety with a strong repeat which will start producing flowers in mid June and flower all the way through to the back end of the season and if left deadheaded will produce fairly respectable hips come the autumn
It has good disease resistance but will benefit from being grown in full sun on a rich and moist soil, the flowers are quite large around 3 1/2 to 4 inches in diameter they are semi double loosely formed
there is something very magical about the way they Bob and move in the light summer breeze adding a beautiful sense of whimsy and movement to the flower
Light pink in colour this is a great variety for growing if you’re interested in enticing pollinators and other flying insects into the garden, it also stands up very well to our changeable British weather whether it’s sun rain or wind
Unfortunately there is absolutely no fragrance on this rose whatsoever and although it has very few thorns which would suggest it would be perfect for cutting and bringing into the house it does shatter within around 24 to 3 6 hours in a vase
Very similar to the later addition to the david Austin collections “ Royal Jubilee” which has a much deeper colour and is packed full of fragrance
Try growing Skylark as an informal hedge or boundary to your lawn
