I think it's perfectly normal for trends to trick us into thinking it's our personal style. And I think it is especially obvious when we think about style evolution in general. The 20's, 30-40's, then 50's and evolution to 60-70's are very marked in their typical look of the decade. Remember the crazy 80's? However I believe we can definitely have our own personal style and our own personal interpretation of a style season. Nowadays just skipping all the micro trends is an achievement and quiets the noise. Right now we think we finally "got it"... chances are we will be looking different in another 10 years. And that is perfectly fine IMHO

I think timeless fashion is a myth and has been sold to us by brands so that we will spend more on items. That said, I think there are things that can have a long-term place in your personal wardrobe and that we should purchase with longevity in mind and find ways (using a tool like Indyx helps!) to keep wear things as long as possible. I loved this video!

The sped up trend cycle really seems to reflect that. That said, I do think that some women we consider as style icons had *timeless* style, in the sense that over the years the photos that personify them seem to be imbued with their natural essence. The clothing was a reflection of them. And maybe that's why we consider it timeless (also, mostly quite simple fashion - I'm thinking Jane Birkin, Audrey Hepburn et al); you can recreate it today but those proportions might come off feeling a little dated given the current mood of fashion. And absolutely! I've actually loved Indyx for that as it's highlighting what hasn't been worn in a while, and encouraged me to get things back into regular rotation! x

I think very few of us are brave enough to admit that our ‘personal style’ is 99.9% dictated by trends. Think the ‘cerulean’ scene. It’s important to the fashion industrial complex to not only manipulate us to follow the trends, but to gaslight us into thinking our ‘personal style’ is our own choice. This comment is coming from a fashion tragic. I love your content but could see this in your evolution from skinny jeans and fitted feminine silhouettes, to enormously outsized(unflattering imo) silhouettes, pregnancy excuse notwithstanding. Thanks as always x

Thanks so much for your comment - THIS! I think that this has always been there, that idea that trends have such a big influence over the way we dress, even in the way that our parents talk about what they wore when they were younger. Oh, that was what was "trendy" at the time. It makes a lot of sense. And it's not to say that we aren't being true to ourselves, finding elements we like within what is currently available, and again it speaks to that concept of being part of a social group that I mentioned. Definitely are subsets within fashion where I think the extremes are more minimised (eg. I have a cousin who dresses more rock/goth and her style has been like that the past 20 years, if anything it's become more pronounced as she's gotten older), and I'd say our propensity for risk also plays a role in which trends we take on in our wardrobes. A lot of factors go into it, but you're right that we don't quite exert the level of control over our style across the decades that we might believe that we do. HAH and yes agree the egregiously oversized items were not it. The amount that I made remarks about my identity crisis post having a baby (in the moment I mean), is seared into my mind, I think it speaks volumes about how I was grappling that sense of self at a time where we experienced such a big shift in trends as it were. Though I still have some trouble parting with my Frankie Shop bea blazer as it's kind of perfect to throw on over an evening outfit (probably would have been better off buying a vintage mens blazer in wool to be fair though).

Hello Jamie Lee - this is such fun and interesting with so many sweet photos. I recall many of the outfits and ensembles you shared here. I often reflect on how my own wardrobe has evolved, some things still remain favourites whilst others no longer appeal to me. I've not been one to follow trends, rather preferring to curate styles that are not trending. Thank you for sharing your style journey with us, and reminiscing on what inspired your choices. 🙂

Lovee this video 💕 went through majority of the phases you did! Minus the fact that I didn’t have $ to spend on my true style until the last few years due to grad school and def made some mistakes earlier on but finding my style now. Love that you talk about the practicality of some of your polyester pieces since sometimes that’s all we need, to look put together but also not fuss too much about the fabric

Such a great video!! So interesting to hear you talk through the influences in different years of your life! I remember when you were wearing more beachy pieces and I remember thinking it must be because you live in Australia and telling myself that I live in London and won’t get the same amount of use as you! So interesting to hear that that’s not the case for you either! ❤❤❤

Hi Jamie-Lee! Loved this video... so fun to see the old photos! I really want to dig up my (physical) photo albums from high school to see how ridiculous I looked, but in checking my digital stuff from, say, college years (early 2000s) it's interesting that I seem to be drawn to similar "themes" even today. I love a bold print, I love exaggerated volume on one half of the body, etc. I'm glad that I held onto my entire Charlotte Olympia collection... all of her shoes put a smile on my face whenever I wear them. Some stray observations... I truly don't think that chic trousers were widely available until, like, the past 8 years or so, haha! And I'm glad that more flattering colors and washes of denim are the norm today... I had some pretty awful whiskering/green-tinted/ugly faded stuff going on in the late 90s early 2000s :P

Oh gosh and so many more on my website too if you scroll the whole way back. That's fascinating isn't it? I can sense the same sorts of things too, though it's all the specifics that sort of change over time (ie. I love print on my lower half but never loved it on my upper half). AGREE on the Charlotte Olympia shoes. I love reaching for my kitty flats and also have some banana sandals which are the most fun things to wear. It's interesting how those sorts of things were the epitome of fashion at the time. I always wish I could go back in time and ask my mum what she thought as she seldom said she didn't like something on me (perhaps kept thoughts to herself, aside from, prints aren't timeless LOL).

@@mademoisellejaime I think with confidence, anyone can pull anything off... which is totally fun but maybe just doesn't have the longevity to carry across the decades :P That's fine though... I think evolution is important! I'm sure your mother was proud of your style no matter what, because it's part of how we express ourselves and come into our personalities! Soon you'll be watching your own kids do the same :)

I loved this video! Such fun and so relatable. Very interesting what you were saying about buying things that bring us joy when we're young, but being much more considered and practical as we get older. I hard relate to that. Can I also ask- what's the dark blue bag in the background? It's stunning!
@mademoisellejaime

I wonder if this is also tied to the fact that when we are younger, we don't have that many financial obligations; no mortgage to service, no kids etc so that playfulness comes in as there isn't anything to lose - we have a lifetime to make considered style purchases (also maybe I'm reading too much into it!). OH that bag is lovely isn't it? Basically a small version of my Madewell tote. It's Quince (US only but you can use mail forwarding if you live outside of the US - what I did) - this is the exact style: bit.ly/3ZRTssQ

I’ve been following you since the kitty flat era. I think all of this is very accurate being a millennial with the wild fashion of the late 00s/early 10s as well as becoming a mom. It’s relatable and still something I’m struggling with (somewhat).

And definitely a reflection of how broader trends within fashion landscape have a larger role to play in defining and shaping what we wear than we think!

Such a fun video! I agree with you about the myth of "forever items." I fell for it in my mid twenties when I was really skinny due to my eating disorder, and so many beautiful pieces I bought then just don't fit me anymore now that I've recovered. Certainly they won't fit me if I ever have a baby. I think it's an interesting perspective to take because I feel like this is yet another fallacy of consumerism masked as a mindful purchasing strategy. X

Firstly I just want to say, congratulations on your recovery! As for the longevity aspect, absolutely. I wish that this had been impressed on me when I was younger as it makes so much sense now when I consider my mum's wardrobe, even my Yiaya's wardrobe. The other thing I didn't touch on is how when we do wear things a *lot*, they will invariably wear out. I used to have this BEAUTIFUL Helmut Lang blazer. I took good care of it, but after around 5 years and more than 600 wears, it was starting to show signs of its age (and would definitely be too small for me now I think); I can tell if I'd kept that in my closet and continued to wear it at the same pace, eventually I'd need to replace it. There's a certain stigma attached to things looking worn or tatty, but a useful shopping strategy I've been employing is thinking, will I still love this item when it looks *worn*. Total tangent here!

@@mademoisellejaime haha because of you i went back to see all my pictures of myself on facebook (i joined FB in 2004 ish) and i never stopped wearing bootleg and straight jeans, always wore confortable shoes (those ballerina sketcher shoes lasted forever and i still remember how i love them so much and once they were no longer wearable, how long i search for a similar pair and never found one until like this year when it cameback) the only difference you see is the waistline of my jeans getting higher so my top are less longer and the waist belt I loved those and now its a little cringey but I bassically always had the same style with very few noticeable change. Also when I got kids I wore a lot more pygamas in my pictures (wonder why! LOL)
