On June 26th, 2019 Thomas Schilter and Luis Crispin became the first Peruvians to reach the summit of Nevado Siula Grande (6,368m= 20,887ft) in the Cordillera Huayhuash of Peru. The other rope team consisted of Arttu Pylkkanen (Finland), Benjamin Billet (France) and myself (Nate Heald). We climbed our new route on the South/Southeast face in 27 hours round trip from camp 1 at 5,400m. Siula Grande was first climbed in 1936 by the North ridge and made famous by the epic "Touching the Void" in 1985. Now there are about a dozen routes to the summit and only about 15 overall ascents of the mountain in history. There is at least 1,000 meters of steep climbing on all sides making it one of the harder mountains to climb in Peru.
