If you are looking for a dog or a cat, check out "animal shelters." Usually maintained by the city government, an animal shelter was formerly called "dog pound." The dogs and cats there need homes.
@MrCarlGW

Yes. The reason retail stores do not sell puppies and kittens anymore is so many in shelters need homes. The stores here will bring dogs and cats from the shelters to their store to give away if the new owners will pay for their shots.

Or, if looking for a certain breed find a rescue organization. Southern California has many breed specific, for the most part, rescues. That way the dog has been in a foster and the rescue knows the personality and health issues, if any, of the dog. Rescues will even rescue dogs out from shelters, too, so it's a win all around.
@parrotkind88

@@MrCarlGW The other big reason is that by doing this, puppy mills will finally go out of business. Puppy mills are a bane to society. They serve no purpose but to make money and the dogs that come from them are usually unhealthy and the parents were DEFINITELY mistreated. Adopt, don't shop. There's my rant. There are reputable breeders that are certainly not puppy mills, I still suggest if one wants a breed specific dog, you can still adopt from a good rescue organization.

To answer your question. I have two dogs and four cats. They all get along fine. In fact, the dogs will break up fights the cats start with each other. It is important that the dogs are taught to not to be territorial over their food since the dogs can kill the cats if the cats attempt to take the dogs food.

If you are going to get a cat and a dog, I would get the cat first so that the dog will grow up with the cat already being there. Also, I would wait until you have the baby before getting either a cat or a dog. Sometimes they will get jealous once you bring the baby home. If the baby is there first, the cat or dog will not know any different. Great video!

I have a dog and a cat. A general rule is often boy dogs are better and girl cats are better. My cat has long hair so her hair has to be cut by a groomer every 4 or 5 months which is expensive. Also, two times we took the cat to the groomer and she got sick then we had to pay to take her to the vet and it cost a lot of money. We got the cat and dog both from rescues. The cat and dog are both friendly and they play with each other. Definitely get the cat first. Different breeds are better if you want a friendly cat or dog. Also, different dog breeds are smarter and listen better then other dog breeds. Some dog or cat breeds might be jealous of a baby.

Really interesting topic. Interesting to compare. Most people get a kitten and a puppy at the same time so they grow up together and become friends. Here is a funny story. We had a young cat when I was "potty training" my daughter. My daughter had a hard time getting the concept. She did not understand. One night we heard a noise in the bathroom. The cat got it before my daughter. She was standing on the toilet seat showing off that she was potty trained. She was so proud of her self, I have her a big treat. So I said to my daughter, see, the cat gets it, you can to, and she then she got it. It was a precious moment.

A dog should definitely be first. They become your friend and some can become your protector. Hounds, and setters are unfailingly friendly; German shepherds and dobermans protect the family. Scientists recently discovered that domesticated dogs have developed eye movements, not found in wild relatives, that mimic human eye movements and they use these expressions to communicate with their owners. Dogs are Way More responsive to humans than cats. Welcome to America. More surprises to come. By the way. You should get a leash and license for Winston!

You, Hu, are so sweet. I have 2 German Shepherd Dogs, one is still a puppy, and 2 adult cats as well. They get along very well. If you are going to have one of each, it would be best to get them both when they are very young so they can grow up together. If you, for example, have an adult dog and bring in an adult cat, the dog can become territorial and jealous of cat. If the cat starts to run, the dog will chase it and a fight can result. If you can only get one at a time, start with the cat and then later the puppy. The cat, when an adult, will not be so afraid of a young puppy and can teach the puppy boundaries for playing together. I know some people think it is bad to have cats and dogs together, but in my lifetime of experiences of having both have never experienced any real, or serious, problems with them. Good luck and let us know what you decide and don't forget to make videos.

The key to having a dog and a cat together is to socialize them when they are young. However, even if you have socialized them well, the cat will often dislike the dog. If the dog knows not to mess with the cat, then the cat will eventually accept the dog in the house. Even when the cat accepts the dog, they usually don't play well together. For dogs, setting boundaries is very important, crate training is a very good way to help set boundaries. Some breeds are more stubborn than others, but you also may consider getting a mutt. I have two dogs here in Dongguan, a pug and a pug/french bulldog mix (frug). The pug is a female, she was much easier to housebreak than the frug was. Be patient with dogs, they are like little children. I used to have a cat here as well, but at that time I lived in a 27 square meter apartment, which wasn't suitable for her active personality. So I gave her away to a friend who has a much larger house. With cats, make sure you keep their claws trimmed, they love to scratch everything that they aren't supposed to scratch (my cat never scratched her scratching post, she preferred my sofa). One important thing about owning a pet is being able to identify symptoms, if anything seems off (especially when they are kittens or puppies), it's important to get them examined by a vet. So find a trusted veterinarian to take your pets to. Owning pets is a lot of work, sometimes it can be very frustrating, but it's worth it~! Good luck to you and Winston, I hope you guys can find exactly what you're looking for ;)

I have a dog and a cat. Usually it depends on the pets personalities. Best chances for the pets to get along would be get them both while they are young so they get used to each other. As long as your dog isn’t aggressive they could live with a cat as long as the cat isn’t afraid of them. My first cat and dog that lived together was a very old dog and a very small kitten. The elderly dog avoided the kitten originally and also she was smart enough to know if she hurt the kitten she would get in trouble but over time the elderly dog loved the kitten because the kitten was so cute and wasn’t afraid of her. They used to sleep together and it was so cute. One time the kitten got stuck in the tree and the elderly dog start barking at us and lead us to the tree. So we saved the kitten and the elderly dog was so worried. This relationship was so sweet and adorable. After the elderly dog past away the cat had behavioral problems and growled at the new puppy we gotten. That cat ran away afterward. We think maybe because the elderly dog is gone and the cat don’t see a reason to stay especially he didn’t like the puppy. My second dog and cat experiences. I had 2 dogs a male and a female about 1 years old. One of them lived with cats before and both dogs never showed aggression towards cats. We cat a 4 years old cat from the SPCA animal shelter and they gave us 2 week trials to see if we like the cat. Well when we got the cat she dominated the dogs by jumping on top of their cages and eating their food and also slept on their beds. Maybe it’s because of her age she was more dominant than the 2 larger young dogs. Also the young dogs kept looking at us when the cat are doing this. The dogs doesn’t want to get in trouble with us as well so they left the cat alone. The only time I saw they chase after a cat if the cat is afraid of them but they only want to scare the cat away but never hurt it. As long as the cat isn’t afraid of the dog it should be ok. Also my male dog had a good relationship with the cat who is a female. They occasionally kiss. The female dog not so much. Also currently I have one cat and one dog. My male dog lived with cats before so he was ok but my husband’s cat never lived with a dog. Well my dog learn to respect my husband’s cat by giving him space and try to look small by laying down. His cat didn’t like my dog and avoid my dog and hide but later on the cat got jealous and became braver and start coming out and trying to eat my dog’s food, sleep on my dog’s bed, the cat even peed on my dog’s bed which made my dog sad. Also the cat demanded attention from us in front of the dog. My husband thought it was funny how there is this rivalry for attention between the cat and dog. They seem to have gotten along as best as they could. They aren’t best friends but they can live with each other and they can be left alone without problems.

You can totally get a dog and cat together at the same time, or very close to the same time. They are usually very adaptive animals and do well. @@burnzy3210 Well, my lifelong experience with dogs is that crossbreeds and mutts tend to be healthier, more intelligent and less temperamental than purebreds. And as for breeders' care for their animals, I'm not buying that they are superior. Yes, there are lots of people out there that don't know how to properly care for their pets, but the true horror stories usually involve breeders. And anybody that intentionally breeds English Bulldogs, (which grow up to have difficulty even breathing properly,) or Sphinx cats (which have higher incidence of heart, skin and neurological diseases,) or bubble eye goldfish, is obviously sadistic and cruel.

With a baby on its way you might want to wait with getting cats and dogs. Animal jealousy/rivalry is a real thing when a human baby becomes part of what the animals consider their territory. Specially with cats who can be pretty vicious as they are predators by nature. It's a lesser problem with dogs as they are flock animals and adapt easier to new members in their flocks.

If a dog and a cat grow up together, they generally get along just fine. Get them both young, around the same time. In the eighties, pet stores used to all have dogs. But then there was a series of public scandals and news stories, where it was revealed that many of the dogs in pet stores came from puppy mills, where the dogs were treated very badly, and also, there was a lot of inbreeding, so the animals weren't healthy. So then people started to think that a pet store isn't a good place to get a dog. Many pet stores still sell dogs, of course, but only if people will buy them. I'm not surprised that there are some pet stores that don't sell them anymore. Many pet stores do have kittens, as well; but the market is limited because it's so easy to find free kittens, or just adopt a stray.

You mentioned people not walking much. Generally that is true in the US but in places like New York City people walk everywhere or take public transportation. Even then they usually have some walking to do. Los Angeles (Southern California) is famous for driving everywhere. I also recommend getting a pet from a shelter. Petco usually has local shelters bring pets to various store locations a few times a year to help find homes for pets before they have to be put down. Many of the pet stores do this.

Definitely go to rescue centers and spca to adopt a dog or cat. (and some rescues have many other species). they are all financed differently and some have more in facilities to take in more animals. When you rescue an animal you help with that financing and also open a space for another animal that needs rescue. And your pet will be very happy to be rescued so you begin with a very good bonding right at the start.

The reason that you need to go to a breeder to get a dog is because the breeder is licensed and inspected. There used to be a big problem with people raising dogs for pets. They would have about 100 female dogs in little cages, pregnant nearly all the time. Like a factory. It was horrible. So the breeders are now carefully inspected by the government. They make them give the dogs proper care, enough room, let them interact with other dogs, pet them and socialize them, give them their medical treatment, and just generally look after them properly. And a reputable pet store will only get a dog or cat from a licensed breeder. The same is becoming true of many other pets.

I have 2 cats and a dog. We got the cats first and got both cats at the same time (they are litter mates) from the Humane Society and we recently got a dog (half Labrador half Poodle) and it seems like getting the cats first was a good choice. Cats are easier to deal with in general so if you haven't owned a pet before it works out better that way because you can gradually increase the difficulty level. I highly recommend the Labradoodle mix because they are very smart and most likely will not shed much if at all which is nice! Hope that helps! Cheers!

If you want both dog and cat, get them at same time and right after weaning. Dogs could care less, but cats need to know from the start how to get along with "siblings ". And if you are REALLY up for an adventure, get them about the same time as your due date ;)

Most people in the west tend to adopt shelter dogs and cats since we see they bond to people who adopt them and look after them if they were abused or abandoned it might take little time but here in Aus I have 3 injured Australian Magpies where 1 has 1 missing eye and 1 amputated wing 1 with no feet ( He has prosthetic feet the only issue is when he wakes up and needs me to put his feet on so he can walk around and stand up and one has missing wings they all sleep in my bed ( And toilet trained where they have a little box each to poop in and half the time are sleeping but one with bad feet has a kid now and sometimes sleeps outside where I put a little door to let them in like a cat and dog door ) So that is why people in the west tend to adopt animals that are abused/hurt/injured :)

Hello doc, here comes some unasked advice. Cats can smell up the place, hair everywhere, scratch an inquisitive baby, and stress out a friendly dog. If you do decide to obtain a cat, let's hope your child isn't allergic. As for dogs, wait until well after the birth, two obvious reasons...you'll be quite tired for a couple of months from lack of proper sleep, and a dog will bond better if the child is already in the home prior to the animal's arrival. Lastly, my idea of a good dog...either a Basengi or a Desi Dog...both breeds are intelligent and extremely healthy.

My advice is, only get a dog if you can commit to giving it a good and healthy life with lots of love and attention because they’re pack animals and will be very dependent on you. Cats can look after themselves and will probably find a second home independent of the home you provide for them. I’ve got a dog who is now 14 & a half years old. When I got him as a tiny little pup, I vowed that when his life is up, he will have had a good and happy life. It was the first time in my life that I was able to commit to owning a dog and tho’ it’s been a bit hard sometimes, like through work and moving, I’ve always made sure my “Buddy” is good. You’ll be having your first child soon (massive congrats to you & Winston). I think the baby will take up all your time to start with, so I would hold back on owning a dog at the moment until you can commit to including a canine in your family. That’s my opinion, but you know your life better than I do, so the choice is yours. 😊👍

Look up local rescue and all aged kitties can be found in the local animal shelters. You are In LA an there are tons of groups that help save dogs. You'll find a pet soon.

We haven't had the normal type pets stores since the 1990s. By normal I mean dogs and cats and puppies and kittens stores. back in the 90s thats what was sold at them. Now stores are really just food and toys stores with some fish and reptiles tossed in. Was a big BIG uproar over puppy mills and sorry conditions. Im glad as I dont miss the old stores and hate how the animals were treated. But I did enjoy those stores at the time. Dogs and cats are at local shelters and SPCA and such.
