A few days ago I was listening to Peter Frampton being interviewed on an episode of Q on CBC Radio. (To listen to that Q interview, Google is your best friend) Frampton spoke to this exact studio moment of when Drake sprung this new 'talking steel guitar' concept onto the rest of his fellow in-studio members. Frampton told the interviewer that upon hearing Drake's new-fangled instrument making that 'talking' sound during a break between their song takes he recalled telling Drake, "Where can I get one of them". ^ He was that impressed

This album is lovely, released 1964. Unchained Melody at 13:38 kzitem.info/news/bejne/2qOr3pedg31ygoIsi=OoqF3zGND2dxmvV7 . Use the "more" Button to see all the tracks . Pete Drake also did these albums to help other musicians and give them a bit of work , he used The Anita Kerr Singers on a lot of his "talking Guitar" albums and as you will hear, Pete didn't "hog" the tracks himself, the other musicians did the lions share with Pete Drake dropping in the Talking Steel Guitar in appropriate places....... Pete once said "I almost starved to death for a couple of years when I moved to Nashville". When he got famous ( and almost single handedly reopened the door for the Pedal steel guitar in Nashville after the instrument suffered a few years low demand because of Rock & Roll ) he always helped other up and coming ambitious musicians. To say Pete Drake was a prolific session musician is an understatement, in the 60s he was so much in demand for straight country steel guitar sessions he probably did more sessions than all the other steel guitarists put together ( five sessions a day at his peak ) .......he played on almost everybody's records.

Who was first? Alvino Rey or Pete Drake. Rey's effects ruled pop radio since the late 50's on so many "Pams", those copyrighted ID's like I grew up with on WLS Chicago. He kept it secret his wife did the mouth work. I remember seeing Pete on a TV show back then early 60's.

Rey invented the Sonovox in 1939 but that’s sadly forgotten by most. His whole moniker for years was “Alvino Rey and his Singing Guitar” which is probably why Pete was stuck with “Talking Guitar”.
