Pete Hawes was volunteered by a neighbor to coach soccer at the Ashland Family YMCA in about 1972 and shortly after he found a letter announcing his appointment to the board on his dining room table. Pete Hawes never looked back. In this video oral history, Hawes tells of the early years of the Y, its ups and downs, caravanning and camping, soccer and basketball, the strength and service of today's Ashland Family YMCA and the importance of the YMCA in his own life.
Pete Hawes' video oral history is part of the Ashland in Transition playlist and documents the many ways the town has changed over the last 100 years. The oral history is made possible in part with funding from the Oregon Heritage Commission and with the support of the Ashland Family YMCA and Southern Oregon University.
