Excellent match. Sampras groundgame on grass, which he rarely had opportunities to show, was awesome. Beautiful variety, cutting backhand slices, mixed with topspin backhands and sharp penetrating forehands. Sampras moved with cat-like effortlessnes. Really great player, a joy to watch.

@@Vaisin Absolutely. We could very well say THE most important. To this point, Sampras only won one slam, but it was three years before and still looking for a second, while Agassi was the Wimbledon reigning champion. This was a turning point, especially being able to win in the fifth after a 2 sets comeback from Agassi, gave Sampras the spark that propelled his 7 Wimbledon wins in 8 years

Imagine the historical ramifications if Agassi closed this match out - as he should have. The Agassi Sampras rivalry would have unfolded much differently with this physiological win under Andre’s belt. He could very well have defended his Wimbledon title as well. It’s conceivable Agassi may have finished his career with 10-12 Grand Slam titles if he’d lifted the trophy after winning this pivotal match.

Pete was predominantly a baseliner early on in his career. his volleys were very good but not great (half volleys were always exceptional though) but his serve made volleys easy for him. His movement was next level though ("he moves like oil") and forehand absolutely lethal. His volleys and backhand improved throughout his career though.

I disagree. Sampras just better then Agassi. Esp in GS where it counts the most. People mention the slower courts nowadays. Looking at this match and current days even wimbeldom matches in 08 etc. I can't tell the difference if the courts are slower. It wouldn't have made any difference. I never notice the courts getting slower. Even when the pundits and commentators mention it.

I started watching tennis when i was 10 in year 2000 and fully committed to it (playing) the following year, and played for 11 years. So i was just in time to see the end of Sampras' carrer (inclugind his beautiful victory at the 2002 Us Open against Agassi, a match that i wanna re-watch after this definitely!) and enjoyed the the 2000s era. So i remember clearly that when Sampras retired the common opinion was that the record 14 slam was unbeatable. So it's really crazy that only in a 20 year span we saw not one, not two but THREE players winning 20-21-22 slams. Wow. We are lucky witnesses

Who is that commentator (around the 4min. mark) who said "Sampras is not a pure serve & volleyor." What is this englishman smoking?
@BurnsTennis
3 жыл бұрын
The commentator was the late Bill Threllfall. Remember at the time of this broadcast, Sampras had yet to win Wimbledon. Sampras was not considered a serve volleyer specialist until towards the end of his career. At this stage on non grass surfaces he stayed back on his serve a lot. I would consider Edberg, Rafter and Krajicek as pure serve volleyers. Sampras and Becker were all court players.
