Good for you! Your counselor took into account many factors of who you are instead of pushing an ideology on you. Too many kids are pushed the ideology instead. Its amazing what not taking on five figures of extra debt when young can do for a future. But think of the lost time. Most colleges are setup for the five year plan [unethically teeing up required classes for undergrads using same day/same time]. Then there's maybe... 8 years to pay off the college loans: 13 years burned. Properly managed, a college degree will earn more annually but losing compounded time value of investments has no refund and no compensation.

I taught as an adjunct professor for a university in a STEM field. Thankfully none of my students were focused on pronouns. I didn’t push this woke mind virus crap and pushed my students and believed in them. I focused on the material rather than ideological garbage. My students were revealed to me as being observed to be the best performing in the subject I taught that the university had seen. I received higher ratings by the students compared to full time faculty. When you treat students with dignity, but demand excellence from them whilst demonstrating you truly care about their success, they thrive. If you’re good at teaching, you shouldn’t need tenure. Our youth are capable but are being cheated from their potential by a bunch of morons in charge.

Great talk, and bravo on the new university. Re: anti-woke being closed minded to woke, I'm not troubled by that because I've gone down the rabbit hole of trying to understand woke, only to discover how mindless it is. How intentionally destructive it is. At some point you have to conclude there is nothing there to be discussed, only destroyed. If a woke person wants to have a thoughtful and respectful discussion about it I'm wide open to it, I just have yet to meet such a person. Seems that's the same reason Peter has given up on the current university system and is starting his own. Because he concluded it was hopeless. Re: the pathway out of this, I don't think reason alone is going to work. At root, western civilization developed such a rich intellectual ascent because of the underlying Judeo-Christian values and beliefs of the culture.

I actually have encountered one such respectful person…BUT I suspect it’s because the Kool-Aid hasn’t 100% taken effect deep down, and she’s had enough run-ins online with those much more far gone than her to make her wonder. I can work on one person. But a whole system like this I think most of it is corrupt. A few existing universities I do believe have either not given way entirely or can be saved because there are still conservative or libertarian leanings. Auburn University is an example of one that I think hasn’t given in all the way. Yet the University of Alabama has surrendered. Similarly MS State may still be salvageable but Ole Miss is in a worse state. Some have said Texas A&M is in trouble but it’s not as far gone as University of Texas. Notice the schools that have held on longer are Southern land-grant colleges that typically house the more practical majors as opposed to being as liberal arts focused. I think a few specific schools can be targeted to keep but most institutions are gone.

Leftists hate hierarchies and status quo as they feel oppressed (even though nobody is oppressing them. ..they're just weak weirdos that don't fit in society). I recall telling my parents that if nothing changes, universities in the US will self destruct, as they are being High Jacked but what is today’s Woke ideology. What we see on the streets of the western world these days, is the consequences of producing a generation of ignorant people who lack ability to debate, listen to opposing views and question the sources they rely on. Many in academia and in the Woke movement have rewritten and are continuing to rewrite history. Douglas Murray, in War on The West, dissects the DEI and Woke movement and how current “intellectuals” use false arguments to ignore and rewrite historical facts.

I cannot speak for everyone, but as to why I "didn't fall for this," it wasn't because I was a staunch conservative. I actually identified as non-politically affiliated social liberal. For me, it was because the topics of poverty, oppression, etc...weren't just ideas being bandied about at dinner parties but an everyday reality I grew up with. So when I heard the middle class SJWs spouting on about why this was happening or how XYZ led to so-and-so outcome, I saw it for the disconnected bs that it was. The idea that someone entrenched in a systematic cycle of poverty just needed free money and access to the "right" tools to pull themselves out - ALL extrinsic motivators - was infantile fantasy. I remember being at a very progressive friend's house and she and her wife going on and on about oppression and the cure for it and feeling talked down to and just losing it, blurting out "how would you know?" These people don't live next to the people they claim to want to help. They overpay for homes not for the buildings but the exclusionary factors the price tags bring with it. They don't sit there and struggle with getting a child to close years of learning gaps but instead just inflate their grades with free 100s and bonus points for every checkbox they fall into. In every aspect, it's always the quick and easy "fix" wrapped up in a self-congratulatory pat on the back for being so loving and kind, even as they spout the foulest of vitriol towards those that don't align with their beliefs. It is the very part of me rooted in fair play that rails at the INjustice and sees this as the hypocritical pile of crap that it is. So I ask myself the opposite question: "how does anyone who thinks themselves liberal-minded fall for this?"

There was the question of how to open the mind of a person (including yourself) who is locked in their own belief. Well, you first need to be able to engage in a conversation that is respectful and not threatening. A habit that I like to implement, and would like to see it spread, when I encounter an insurmountable conflict of opinion with an inability to move, is that I tell the person: Let's make a deal: You respect my right to wrong and I'll respect your right to be wrong. This can also come in the beginning of a conversation with such an opponent, as laying the ground rules. It allows for a disagreement, while being respectful and humble, without canceling either of your opinions. That can be the starting point that allows a person to really evaluate their own position critically.

Why do some people fall for this and others do not? I will add my personal experience, anecdotal as it is, because I believe it speaks to the question. I initially fell for and went along with gender self ID, believe all women, white guilt and the rest, out of a ‘go along to get along’ habit, and out of my personality of wanting people to like me so I am agreeable. What eventually brought me around to pushing back against, is that I had been taught (I’m am 46 year old, a late Gen X cohort member) to think classically liberally by several high school and college instructors. I am also a trained scientist with a B.S. in Physics so I do think of things rationally and empirically, but have been goaded about that because it doesn’t admit the emotional consideration of the personal I may disagree with. It took a while for my unease with questioning these emotionally compelling hypothetical a priori statements, which are also often unfalsifiable, and begin to think along the lines of evidence instead of ideology. What diverted me down this path of questioning was picking up photography as a hobby, and beginning to understand my rights as a photographer when out in public. I encountering cases where photographers were being harassed and even attacked in public, and it was in trying to understand the reasoning behind those that were harassing and attacking photographers that I encountered these standpoints which were very illiberal. At the same time a group of girls in the church my family attends all came out as trans, and knowing gender dysphoria is rare I thought that something was going on. I also had dipped my toe into post-modern philosophy in the 00’s when I had a class in philosophy in college and the Matrix Trilogy came out. So I immediately recognized the post-modernist mark on the philosophy behind these ideologies. All of this together was enough to jar me out of my ‘go along to get along’ stupor.

A simple cost/benefit analysis would do anyone thinking about attending a college/university a world of good. For example; a person interested in becoming a public school teacher should consider the average starting salary (approximately 49k) vs the average amount of student loan debt (approximately 120K) that he/she will accumulate from getting said degree. Student loan debt cannot be forgiven despite what the Biden administration may tell you. You will have to repay that loan with interest in your lifetime. That’s a significant amount of debt for someone making under 50K a year. You have to remember that you’re going to have to pay for your rent/mortgage, a car payment, gas for the car, utilities, food, taxes on all of the above, etc… on top of your student loan. This is unsustainable for a person making 50K a year. Now teachers generally do get raises every year so that number will go up but will it go up enough to offset the costs of the items I described above with inflation. I think not, so you had better be prepared to live a very frugal lifestyle for the better part of your 20’s and 30’s. By all means become a public school teacher if this appeals to you.

Not only defund universities, but also overhaul public education and shut down the Teacher's Union

I'm a centrist, so I don't agree with every position advanced by PragerU... that said, I'm consistently impressed by Marissa, Amala, and other PragerU associates ability and desire to engage in civil intelligent discourse with the other side. There's no grand-standing, no shouting, no condemnation... just establishing facts and debating conclusions. On the topic at hand, higher education's priorities today, I'm in complete agreement with Peter.

Our children were granted free college tuition fees by the military.. we are on our way to the Philippines in 3 years- this just answered my question of whether we push our kids to have their degrees here in the US or enroll them in the Philippines universities.. Universities in my home country do not indoctrinate students this way- I know since I graduated there.. and to witness the total collapse of the US institutions is just plain wrong. The whole truth and history of this country is not just a dream.

The problem here with the good professor is he hasn't completely thought through the idea of first principles apparently. He rails against supposed social groups that ostracize people for ideological beliefs. But then he also rails against people who believe that cutting off minors' genitals is immoral. Social groups do cohere based on a shared group of first principles and some of them have to be the "right" first principles. There is a myside bias, for instance - cutting off the genitals and body parts of children and adolescents is always immoral unless it was for cancer or something like that. If someone would believe otherwise they wouldn't be in my social groups. Pedophilia would be another example where people would be ostracized from my social groups if they believed in that. The "question everything always" mentality was the big error of the European Enlightenment. There were some political and religious institutions and societal norms that did need to be reformed. But they went back and threw out everything to include first philosophical and religious principles. One need only read a cursory history of the French Revolution to see the horrific results of doing that... of not having right first principles. The Chinese and the Russian Revolutions make the same point.

Universities as they are currently, are farms of career academics. When you concentrate intellectuals in purely intellectual institutions, ivory towers form, completely detached from the real world and this sort of luxury ideas like socialism, communism, wokeness start to arise, are entertained seriously and then disseminated/indoctrinated into students and, ultimately, the population. I defend there should be a minimum age of admission to become a teacher that guarantees (or increases the chances) that someone had real world experience before becoming an academic. My age suggestion would be 45. At this point, most would have had work and life experiences, possibly had relationships, marriages and children, so they would have a grounded idea of reality and some skills on how deal with people in general and especially children and teenagers.

It's impressive to see a true liberal thinker like Peter make these common sense arguments. This bravery needs to be recognized by all of us on the Right and the Left. I'm looking forward to watching a true conservative figure follow the same path of truth as Peter is pursuing. Thank you Prager U and Peter for this conversation.

I'd rather he said "We (the liberal intellectuals) f'ed up by handing over the keys to the radical left. Now help us fix this, What should we do?". As much as I admire him and enjoy his insight, I hesitate to trust his solutions when it's his ilk that allowed this to happen. Prior to the liberal intellectuals handing over the keys and many of them joining the radicals, the conservatives abandoned the schools. Liberals like him have poor ability to manage. He might be right but I hesitate to trust.

@@hebber1961Peter has devoted himself to challenging liberal dogmas throughout his career. What you’re doing by labeling him as a liberal and discrediting him on that alone is antithetical to the point of this video.

@@soph1e Well he is a liberal. He calls himself a classic liberal. He probably doesn't like anyone's 'dogma'. I'm not discrediting him, I don't trust his solutions since it's his liberal brethren and inability to run things in the schools that put us here. Thought that was pretty clear.

Didn't Peter Boghossian and James Lyndsay publish extracts from "Meine Kampf" in a (so called) prestigious scientific journal where they took out all references to Jews and replaced them with 'white men'. If I remember rightly, it was praised for its insight and nobody picked up on it until Boghossian and Lyndsay told them what they had done!
